POPSThe amazing F1 Yas Marina Circuit, in Abu Dhabi “A perfect union and harmonious interplay between elegance and spectacle. The search here was inspired by what one could call the 'art' and poetics of motor racing, specifically Formula 1, coupled with the making of a place that celebrates Abu Dhabi as a cultural and technological tour de force.” Hani Rashid

POPS"America's Manliest Cities" The Manly Methodology* -- The rankings were determined using 50 of the largest metropolitan areas as defined by the United States Census Bureau, which includes a central city and the surrounding county (or counties). Each metro area received a manliness rating between 0 and 100 based on how well it performed in each of the study's manly categories. Factors used to determine the manliest city rankings included the number of U.S.-made cars driven in the city, number of sports bars and BBQ restaurants, number of home improvement and hardware stores as well as manly salty snacks consumption. All data was adjusted by the current population of the cities to arrive at "per capita" figures, providing an accurate comparison between cities of varying sizes.

POPSHow to Change Your Driving Habits and Save Gas? We know what you’re thinking: we’re going to nag you about slowing down in the name of fuel economy. Well, you’re partly right. But we’re not going to pull a Jimmy Carter on you and say you should drive 55 mph. That would be dangerous and probably not help the cause of energy conservation.

POPSMechanical 'skin' reduces aeroplane drag I'm sure there are a few other places this could be used. Maybe high speed trains or Formula 1 racing. Anywhere people want to go faster. The idea was started when they roughed up a few swimming costumes. Sort of counterintuitive, to have to rough something up to get a smoother ride. Perhaps the truth also is that everything is rough, it's just that most of the detail is too fine for us to notice. Air currents can put a surface under more intense scrutiny.

POPSAbu Dhabi: East Leans West
To make itself the region’s true cultural hub, the emirate has forged surprising partnerships, and is negotiating others, with some of the world’s leading cultural and academic institutions, several based in New York. In 2006, for instance, Abu Dhabi commissioned the Guggenheim Museum to construct a vast, 450,000-square-foot branch in the emirate. This past November came the announcement for New York University–Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), which will be the first comprehensive liberal arts campus that any major American research university establishes abroad. The emirate has also recruited the Sorbonne to create a French-language university and inked a whopping $1.3 billion deal with the Louvre to use its name, build a classical art museum, and share and jointly acquire art. Further, Abu Dhabi is talking with the New York Public Library and several other great libraries about opening branches, and it has approached New York’s Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center about a partnership.

POPSCoffee Corrupts America's Youth We can all laugh at Starbucks' typically popmpus token gesture of contrition. (Yeah, blame the barristas! Not whatever idiot designed all those weird factory-made collage panels on the walls of every Starbucks from Timbuktu to Taipei!) But what really frightens me is that American 16 year olds are using words like "stigma" while lamenting the metaphysical condition of the chain-cafe that provides the fix to keep their caffeine addiction at bay. Shouldn't they be busy drag racing hot rods around Dead-Man's-Curve? Or Rebelling without a Cause? Is the "stigma of commercialism" now one of the many bewildering social concerns brought on by puberty?
