I am guilty at this, as my dog eats, good meats, ice cream, cookies, you name it she wants it, but how do you say "no" to those longing eyes when they look at you!

The Difference In Dogs And Cats Excerpts From Their Diaries
merrie
by merrie  6-24-2008
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. The audacity! I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released --and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded! The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. The captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.......for now. :D

How many words do dogs understand?
fewstingscorpio
by fewstingscorpio  6-18-2008    1
For other dog owners, we all know soon we have to say W for walk or C for cookie and so on. This must be done only because they learn words fast. As with the examples above, I would obviously say the 'fast part' is associated with positive things...they're not dumb! SF Weekly: A Time to Kill
Lexica
by Lexica  6-13-2008
The SF SPCA is moving away from their previous, well-respected no-kill policy, and is accelerating euthanasia of possibly-adoptable pets in order to save money. Every one of my cats has been a shelter rescue. Every cat or dog I have in the future will be a shelter rescue. This story makes me heartsick.

SUBSTANTIATED TRUE FACTS
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  6-8-2008
Breast cancer patients are significantly more likely to have a pet dog instead of a cat. 80% of all breast cancer patients have had "extensive contact" with dogs before their diagnosis. Researchers speculate that dogs (and possibly other pets) harbor viruses that can raise the risk of contracting cancer. - San Diego Union, 11/20/07

Beer has gone to the dogs
michellezm
by michellezm  5-13-2008    3
"Imported from Holland, where it is called Kwispelbier - "tail-wagging beer" - it is being sold at £1.99 for a 33cl bottle. Made using a traditional brewing process, the drink contains malt barley extract. A spokesman for Pets at Home said: "While initially people may think of the drink as a novelty, it makes a delicious treat for a thirsty dog. "It also encourages drinking, which is good for the kidneys, and is a great source of vitamin B. "It means pets are even more a part of family life as they can enjoy a beer, too."

Need A Specialist Fast? Too Bad You're Not A Dog
merrie
by merrie  5-13-2008
And where care for our dogs, cats and horses puts our own system to the greatest shame is in the domain of wait times and access to specialists. Our pets may not be able to talk, but they can get an appointment with a primary care vet within 24 hours and a specialist within the week. "I have a friend who had a dog with cancer and it got treatment within two weeks," says Tina Kelly, an IT buyer in Waterloo, Ont. "For something like that in a human, I bet the response would've been 10 times as long." There are just 10,800 vets in this country compared to over 62,000 human doctors. But try, as a human, to get an appointment with a specialist. Try, for that matter, getting a GP — five million Canadians, about 15 per cent of the population, don't have one, while 15 per cent of those who do still report trouble receiving routine care. And a referral from your family doctor to a specialist puts you in store for a new ordeal. According to the most recent edition of "Waiting Your Turn...
