POPSJudge Sonia Sotomayor Denied My Appeal and I Spent 16 Years in Prison For a Crime I Didn't Commit I defended my innocence before the New York Appellate Division, raising such proof as the fact that the physical evidence found did not match me and arguing that the police violated my rights by coercing a false confession from me at the age of 16. The court ruled against me 5 to 0, concluding that there was nothing wrong with my interrogation and stating that there was "overwhelming evidence of guilt," despite the fact that there was no evidence beyond my forced confession. In truth, the DNA and the hairs found on the victim's body were evidence of my innocence. Read full article:

POPSHow absurd is this; A patent on a human gene? How absurd is this; A patent on a human gene? I believe the patent law is way out of line. You would not believe what has been patented, from seeds, conventional plant varieties and ANIMAL SPECIES to herbs, spices, oils and sugarcane, they never got around to PATENTING marijuana for entertainment or medicinal purposes, they just outlawed that altogether. It wouldn't surprise me that sometime in the future the air we breathe will have a patent owned by some corporation who can thus charge a fee for BREATHING. I've got a good idea, why don't some big corporation take out a patent on GREED, they would own the whole GD world if they could do that. Please watch the video and sign a message of support to stop BIG PHARMA from taking patents out on human genes. http://thinkingblue.blogspot.com

POPSPatents of genes Under consideration (may 2009) is a suit challenging the right of companies to patent genes. Some ethicists do not take issue with Myriad's patents but with how the company uses them. Part of the ALCU's argument is that Myriad charges $3,000 for its diagnostic cancer test, a price that prevents some women from seeking this preventive measure.

POPSMatthew Yglesias: Conservatives Against Being Against Racism And it’s not just a quirk of Beck’s. This attitude goes deep in the DNA of the modern conservative movement. National Review’s position on Civil Rights was that segregation was bad, but the cure of the civil rights movement was worse than the disease of white supremacy. Barry Goldwater campaigned for president on the proposition that Jim Crow might be bad, but not nearly so bad as the Civil Rights Act. As the policy status quo shifted, the precise nature of the conservative position changed with it so that now affirmative action is worse than discrimination against minorities and “political correctness” is worse than racism, but the basic spirit is the same.

POPSPolice to destroy DNA profiles of 800,000 innocent people This represents less than 18% of the 5.1 million DNA profiles they have in their database. Is this a token move to appease civil rights groups? Will they actually destroy these samples? Are these samples merely copies and therefore not really being destroyed? England is ground zero for the Big Brother scenario as described by George Orwell in the book 1984. I find it difficult to believe they would simply discard DNA data on anybody. The argument for a DNA database is that it can play a crucial role in proving innocence and overturning miscarriages of justice. Earlier this year DNA was a vital factor in proving the innocence of Sean Hodgson, who spent nearly 30 years in prison for the death of a young woman in 1979. But then again if the testing and matching is accurate in the first place innocent people would be prevented from being convicted.

POPSSupreme court to hear Alaska man's DNA appeal As for Osborne himself, he was paroled in 2007 after serving 14 years on the rape case. Six months later, he was arrested on new charges stemming from a home invasion robbery. In January, he agreed to a plea deal that calls for another 16 years in prison. He's 36 years old and has been incarcerated most of his adult life. He never expected his request for a DNA test to end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. He doesn't expect that it will make much difference for him. "I just hope it helps somebody, somewhere down the line, somehow," he said in a jailhouse interview.

POPSYou like the cheese, now comes a drug.. :) The gene was injected into a one-celled goat embryo, which was then implanted into the womb of a surrogate mother. After a goat was born that produced the protein in its milk, the herd was expanded by conventional breeding. Can be a big step forward in advancing wider availability at a lower costs of drugs.

POPSLA Police Fail to Use Funds to Test Rape Kit
US: LA Police Fail to Use Funds to Test Rape Kit "Why add to the suffering of rape victims by making them wait years to investigate and prosecute their cases -- or letting a prosecution go forward without this evidence?" said Sarah Tofte, a US Program researcher at Human Rights Watch who is researching the rape-kit backlog in Los Angeles and around the country. "The department needs to use its own budget and any future grants to make sure the job gets done." Timely testing of rape kits can be critical to bringing justice to sexual assault victims. It is often difficult to solve or prosecute a rape case effectively without this forensic evidence. Furthermore, under California law, there is no statute of limitations for bringing a case if the rape kit is tested within two years. But if it is not tested in that time frame, the statute of limitations is 10 years. "I want to thank Human Rights Watch for effectively pushing this issue into the forefront of the public arena," sai

POPSGood Friend Of Ann Durham's Father, Stanley Months back the MSM and the talking heads on the left challenged Sen. John McCain’s as a ‘natural born citizen’ and Constitutional qualification/ability to run for POTUS because he was born to his mother and his ABSOLUTELY, UNDENIABLY, KNOWN FATHER on a Naval Base in Panama Canal Zone … It was thoroughly investigated and THEN the Senate decides “Yeah, he’s cool … he can run”. This man who had a career as a Navy pilot and spent 6 years of his life as a POW in service to this country. This man who spent his adult life in service to this country … questioned on his citizenship and eligibility to run for POTUS.

POPSThe Startle Reflex: Key to Your Politics "Researchers shied away from using labels such as conservative and liberal in their study, but they concede that volunteers who registered a heightened sense of threat also tended to subscribe to conservative attitudes. "It's not that conservatives are 'fraidy-cats," says Kevin Smith, a political science professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and one of the study's co-authors. "It's that people who support socially protective policies — which, yes, can be interpreted as people taking a conservative position on those policies — are more sensitive to environmental threat."

POPSChina's Humiliation China's current society is contradictory and confusing. Probably most people in China are proud of the Olympics coming to their country. This assuages their feeling of humiliation. At the same time, there remains many violations of human rights that should make individual Chinese feel humiliated.

POPSObama Considers Monsanto, Bush Sec. Of Agricuture for VP
So, when Barack Obama even CONSIDERS a Monsanto person for his VP, we are looking at one hellish choice on his part and one large one on ours. Because ANYONE connected to Monsanto, at a time when our family farmers and ranchers (we are losing 1000 ranchers a month) are facing imminent collapse, is a threat to our land, our democracy and our lives. I hope you read the following with the horror it deserves and then get hold of every farming, environmental, human rights group you know and with them, let Obama know that some things are impossible to swallow, and monopoly over food with the loss of our farmers is TOP of the list. And in case you are late to who Monsanto is, you can read this to understand the dire significance of Obama's even considering such a choice and what it says about him as a "grass-roots" anything: Obama's Uniquely Awful Veep Prospect 2 hours, 4 minutes ago The Nation July 26, 2008 The Nation -- Barack Obama's vice presidential search team

POPSAll-girl fish that hasn't had sex for 70,000 years According to the report in the BMC Evolutionary Biology journal, one theory is that the fish may occasionally be taking some of the DNA from the males that trigger reproduction, in order to refresh their gene pool. Dr Laurence Loewe, of the university's School of Biological Sciences, said: "What we have shown now is that this fish really has something special going on and that some special tricks exist to help this fish survive. "Maybe there is still occasional sex with strangers that keeps the species alive. Future research may give us some answers."

POPSHuman-cow hybrid embryos made in lab I noticed the was presented in Israel, perhaps a legal issue. They say one of these embryos is just human DNA wrapped up in a cow egg 'skin', but that is all a human egg is. The egg 'skin' just happens to be human. If a cow was growing donor organs, would it get human rights?
