In Orissa Christians treated worse than animals, says Father Bernard
foxyarse
by foxyarse  Yesterday 5:50 AM    1
Fr Bernard Digal is the treasurer of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar. He spoke to AsiaNews about his pain over what is happening in Orissa. He, too, was wounded, beaten for hours by radical Hindus, left for a whole night unconscious, half naked, in the forest, until he was found by his driver. Now he is in the intensive care unit in Mumbai’s Holy Spirit Hospital. During his talk with AsiaNews he was given another unit of blood. But his thoughts were with his people and family, all forced to flee to save their lives, now stranded in a refugee camp near Bhubaneshwar. “My heart is filled with gratitude because God saved my life. But whilst I am being treated here my people are hiding in the forest and even there, there is no security,” he said. “There are mothers breast-feeding their infants, children, young and old people, all hanging on a precarious thread, in terror. Even refugee camps are not free of dangers.”

"Animal rights advocates are useless to animals," a committee composed of members of various political parties and called No to the Useless Animal Lawyers' Initiative told The Sunday Times. "They can't prevent animal abuse because they only get involved after it has been perpetrated." "Anyway these animals look like a lot of lawyers...so the legal profession will feel right at home."

Happy Birthday, Dr. King!
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  1-18-2010
Really nice little article which deserves a read. More below: "Is it mere coincidence that during that heyday of self-absorption it became so popular to blame others for their lack of personal responsibility? To blame the poor for being poor? To blame the homeless for being homeless? To blame welfare recipients for being on welfare? On the day of his birth, if we want to remember Martin Luther King, we must first turn to his words and study them in depth. And if his words are worth remembering this one day, they are worth remembering every day. We should remember Dr. King's words every time we hear someone talking self-importantly about other people's lack of personal responsibility, every time we hear them speak of the poor, the tired, the hungry, the desolate as objects of contempt, lacking in responsibility, dignity, and worth. And we should remember his words as well every time we hear talk about "individual achievement," "competitiveness," or "being all that you can be."

Ms. King, who works for the pro-life group Priests For Life, argues that the fight for rights is not over: "The unborn are as much a part of the Beloved Community as are newborns, infants, teenagers, adults, and the elderly. Too many of us speak of tolerance and inclusion, yet refuse to tolerate or include the weakest and most innocent among us in the human family. As we celebrate the life of Uncle Martin, let us renew our hearts and commit our lives to treating each other, whatever our race, status, or stage of life, as we would want to be treated. So, let us Agape (love) each other and let each other live."

The Christian Case for Immigration Control
Antara
by Antara  1-9-2010
"atheist thinkers whose respect for the West's Christian heritage is far greater than that of Muslim community leaders or their multiculturalist allies. In the long term, the future of Western civilisation can be secured only by an alliance between Christians and secularists against the totalitarian ideology of Islamism. That is a strange prospect; and even more uncomfortable is the realisation that Christianity's survival as a mass movement may depend on something as prosaic as immigration control. But that is surely what Lord Carey is hinting at, and it is brave of him to do so. "

Our Old English Long-Case Clock Rang 12 Times on New Year's Eve
merrie
by merrie  1-3-2010    2
Clocks give life to a room, but the tall clocks of the peculiar form that is now 300 years old have a special dignity. To the early American colonist, owning a clock was a status symbol. Most people of that time could not afford a clock of their own and had to rely on the church clock on the town common for the time of day. Privately owned clocks were only found in the finest of homes and were certain to be displayed in a prominent place for all to view. Long-case pendulum clocks were still a new invention in 1736. In 1580 the Astronomer Galileo observed a swinging lamp suspended by a long chain from a cathedral ceiling. He studied its swing and discovered that each swing was equal and had a natural rate of motion. He later found this rate of motion depended upon the length of the chain or pendulum. In 1640 he designed a clock mechanism incorporating the swing of a pendulum, but he died before building his clock design. Read more-watch video http://bit.ly/8Zms7x

“Death Panels”Regulations: Senate Requires Super-Majority to Repeal
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    1
To change the rules of the Senate, there must be sixty-seven votes. Section 3403 of Senator Harry Reid’s amendment requires that “it shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment, or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection.” The good news is that this only applies to one section of the Obamacare legislation. The bad news is that it applies to regulations imposed on doctors and patients by the Independent Medicare Advisory Boards a/k/a the Death Panels. Section 3403 of Senator Reid’s legislation also states, “Notwithstanding rule XV of the Standing Rules of the Senate, a committee amendment described in subparagraph (A) may include matter not within the jurisdiction of the Committee on Finance if that matter is relevant to a proposal contained in the bill submitted under subsection (c)(3).” In short, it sets up a rule to ignore another Senate rule.

Holocaust Survivor Talks About Obama's Peace Prize

Around the globe, solidarity actions are already being planned for the week of December 27th--find one near you and join in the action! You can also make a peace prayer flag. Send them to us and we will carry them on the march. The peace prayer flags are an easy and powerful way to make sure your voice is present at this historic event. Peace is not just making nice speeches, as President Obama did in Cairo when he told the Arab world that "we understand that the situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable" and that America would not turn its back on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for justice and dignity. That is why I am asking you to help us "walk the talk" by supporting the Gaza Freedom March. With love for all humanity, Hedy Epstein and the CODEPINK team. Endorse the Gaza Freedom March!
