Codex Sinaiticus
jlapac
by jlapac  7-31-2008    2
While it is fabulous to be able to get news in a second and wonderful to view online albums of photos from friends, one of the best parts of the Internet and its functionality is getting access to materials to which ordinary people would never have access. The project to digitize the Codex Sinaiticus has been several years in the making and it is finally coming online this week. While most people won’t be able to read the ancient text, having access and being able to puzzle over the words yourself without an intermediary provides the opportunity to translate the Bible yourself and make your own interpretation.

reCAPTCHA - Digitizing Books One Word at a Time
patchworkthreads
by patchworkthreads  6-27-2007
"But if a computer can't read such a CAPTCHA, how does the system know the correct answer to the puzzle? Here's how: Each new word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct."

Alternative to Google for digital preservation
jillsodt
by jillsodt  6-23-2007
This sounds like an interesting concept. I think Google does some fine things, but one size does not always fit all, so it's nice that there are going to be another alternative for libraries to use. And I still think libraries are better equipped in general to develop this type of technology due to (hopefully) more sensitivity to what is useful, worth preserving, etc. Not everything in the world needs to be saved.

AbyssMedia audio utilities -- I recommend these
enbar
by enbar  3-18-2007
I got i-Sound and Audio Converter Plus from GiveawayOfTheDay.com for free, but I am considering buying them to install on another computer. i-Sound ($30) is a quick, reliable, lightweight direct-to-MP3 recorder, with a simple, clean interface. Does not hog resources or create huge temp files like Audacity.
