Senate Still Addicted to Earmarking Billions for Unwanted Defense Spending
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-29-2009
Senators often like to brag how much they support the military but what they are actually doing is supporting companies that produce military hardware and services by taking money away from needed defense spending and support of troops and giving it to stockholders of profiteering companies and in a number of cases to their own former employees.

Meet the Data Destroyer
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-16-2009
This a pretty cool bit of kit, I'm willing to bet the price is horrendous though. Although I'm guessing it doesnt seem so expensive when bought with tax dollars. "Government specifications require that in an emergency situation a hard drive needs to be destroyed so that a person or persons can not spin the drive. This must be done quickly and reliably. The MHDD meets this requirement. It takes less than 15 seconds to destroy each hard drive. All one needs to do is to insert the proper drive height adaptor (if applicable) into the slot and crank the handle 8 rotations. The internal workings of the unit press down on the drive, bending it approximately 90 degrees. The MHDD then pushes the destroyed hard drive out for easy disposal. To keep the speed at an optimum, the MHDD does not require the handle to be cranked backwards to reset the "bender".

Navy Destroyer Named After Marine Medal Of Honor Winner Jason L. Dunham
merrie
by merrie  8-3-2009    3
In a solemn ceremony punctuated by talk of courage, service and sacrifice, the mother of a Marine corporal on Saturday christened a warship honoring her son, who died after covering an exploding grenade to protect his comrades in Iraq. After composing herself and taking a deep breath, Deb Dunham smashed a bottle of champagne over the bow of the 510-foot warship Jason Dunham, then held the bottle aloft before a cheering crowd of more than 1,500 people. She was joined by the Marines who served with her son, by her husband, Dan Dunham, and their daughter Katelyn Dunham. Two other Dunham boys also were in the audience. Retired Gen. Michael Hagee, a former Marine commandant who was with the Dunhams when their son died at Bethesda Naval Hospital days after the explosion, said Jason gave the “gift of valor.” Hagee said the warship will serve as a reminder that freedom “is paid for by the men and women who wear the cloth of this nation.”

South Korea Gets 40 U.S. Missiles For Destroyer - North Korea Threatens Japan

I wonder if we just aren't giving N Korea every opportunity to develop a weapon they can and will use against S Korea. Thus, drawing the U.S. into a regional war again. Seems there is nothing short of declaring war ourselves that will stop the "idiot" little weasel of a dictator, Kim Jong-il, of N. Korea. Inevitably, any conflict with N. Korea will put the U.S. at odds with China. They don't publicly approve of all what N. Korea does, but the country does provide a buffer zone between the West and Communist China.

Who Voted FOR The Economy-Destroyer Called Cap-and-Trade?
merrie

Some of the key Democrats who voted to support the preliminary vote are the supposedly "conservative" Democrats. Call them now: Boyd (FL) 202-225-5235 -- Voted FOR Driehaus (OH) 202-225-2216 -- Voted FOR Kratovil (MD) 202-225-5311 -- Voted FOR Kanjorski (PA) 202-225-6511 -- Voted FOR Teague (NM) 202-225-2365 -- Voted FOR Check out the complete list of fence-sitters and make some calls now. Stop Pelosi and her bill, which was summarized perfectly by GOP Rep. Rohrbacher, who said, "If this passes, jobs will go to China and economy will go to hell." He's not overstating things. And congratulations are due to the House GOP and its leadership: John Boehner and Eric Cantor. Not a single Republican voted for Pelosi's Socialist nightmare. Well done -- and keep up the good fight.

N.Korea defiant over sanctions threat...
mrmoan
by mrmoan  6-20-2009
The USS John S. McCain was shadowing the vessel, the Kang Nam, the first ship to be monitored under a UN resolution imposed a week ago that bans arms shipments to and from North Korea, the official said. Pentagon officials declined to comment on a television report the Navy destroyer was heading to intercept the North Korean vessel. The officials stressed that the UN sanctions do not authorise military force and that Washington was pursuing a diplomatic strategy.

Chinese Sub to USS McCain: "Kan Yu Heer Mi Nau?"
blueridge

Clang! And the USS McCain did not detect them? Or it seems the Chinese sub did not detect the "sonar array" being towed behind the McCain. Speculation in military forum clipped. Interesting "cat and mouse" play in Pacific. There is some ironic symbolism to all this, between China and McCain's namesake vessel.

A Libertarian Revival
willhelm
by willhelm  6-13-2009
"You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream -- the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order -- or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path. Plutarch warned, " 'The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits.' " Ronald Reagan - Address to the nation, October 27, 1964

Get Ready Because Fleet Week Starts Tomorrow
merrie

(like tug of war; Saturday, May 23), and a Memorial Day ceremony with the unfurling of a 100-foot flag, a 3-volley rifle salute, and military flyover (Monday, May 25). Six ships will be taking part in the parade in a "wedge formation": At the front of the wedge is the U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender Katherine Walker. The rest of the wedge consists of three U.S. Navy coastal patrol craft - the Tempest, Hurricane and Thunderbolt, and two Army vessels - the Gelding and Hayward. Following the wedge is the guided missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), then two Canadian ships, the air defense destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and the multi-role patrol frigate HMCS Fredericton. Next in line is the U.S. Coast Guard high endurance cutter Spencer, followed by two more Canadian ships, the multi-role patrol frigate HMCS Montreal, and the multi-role patrol frigate HMCS St. John’s. The final ship in the Parade of Ships is the guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80).

The Case of the Missing H-Bomb: The Pentagon Has Lost the Mother of All Weapons
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  5-17-2009    2
Everyone knows there will be incompetence found in any large organization. We all know ‘upper’ management despises any appearance of incompetence and/or weakness, hence the inevitable ploy known as the “cover up”. Even though these cover ups are nothing new, I still am amazed at the depths of a military cover up. The loss of military equipment, particularly weapons and, OMG, hydrogen bombs, presents a grave concern to the general public. The fact that the military would prefer to cover up these losses and stop looking for them in favor of preserving the outward appearance that they are trustworthy and dependable to keep us all safe, is nothing short of criminal. In light of all the known cover ups we have been forced to endure over the years, is there any possible way that the American public can ever trust politicians, military personnel, CEO’s, bankers, policemen, or any other person of authority?
