POPSArmy Desert Rate Highest Since 1980 Not only deserters but veterans of the current wars are protesting them as not defensive wars for the U.S.. There could be then two classes of dissenters, deserters who flee and those who remain, due to fear of prosecution or what others might think, who remain until their terms is up. The dissent within the military goes drastically unreported. This article mentions dissent during Clinton's wars too, which republicans justly protested against, and Bush campaigned that he would not do the same ("humble foreign policy, no policing the world", as Ron Paul reminds them). But he has done much, much more. America is not fighting terrorists. It is overthrowing countries for global hegemony, which the neocons admit in their plan.

POPSCanada in Afghanistan Canada is trying to lead the Afghan people into freedom, democracy, and a better life. Cultural and social values have to change significantly to allow the economic growth needed to support the country. By building schools, hospitals, and the needed infrastructure, the country has hope of seeing a better future. Certainly, the old ways with the Taliban and drug exports did not give the Afghan people much of a life. Canada is committed to helping Afghanistan build a better economic future with a government representing the population.

POPSLittle effort made to find deserters Prosecution, and court martial would mean testifying under oath. When this is likely to detail conditions that led to desertion, or practices outside accepted rules of engagement, testimony of an eye witness is not a favored option. The answer is one of the cheapest political solutions. Ruin their credibility.
