Musical training enhances integration of the senses
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-3-2008
This study shows that sensorimotor and auditory training induces cortical reorganization to a greater extent than does auditory training alone. It also shows that sensorimotor and auditory training cause more changes in the auditory cortex than auditory training alone. This phenomemon, called cross-modal plasticity, has been investigated only rarely. In 2003, the same group showed that professional trumput players have enhanced interactions between the auditory cortex and the regions of the somatosensory cortex devoted to the lip. The new study therefore provides another demonstration that the sensorimotor and auditory cortices are connected to each other.

A Forbidden City of words
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-28-2008    2
Recently, a new technique has been developed that involves some software that changes the alignment of Chinese words from horizontal to vertical, and it's very popular. Chinese sentences can be read from left to right, right to left, and top to bottom. For a Chinese person reading from top to bottom is not a problem – it has been like that for thousands of years, until the early 20th century. However, the forbidden vocabulary-seeking mechanism is fooled. When all these methods fail, people can still use mobile phones and text messages, which are not covered by the censoring system yet.

Electromagnetic relativity drive being built
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-27-2008
They also said the article should never have been published. "It is well known that Roger Shawyer's 'electromagnetic relativity drive' violates the law of conservation of momentum, making it simply the latest in a long line of 'perpetuum mobiles' that have been proposed and disproved for centuries," wrote John Costella, an Australian physicist. "His analysis is rubbish and his 'drive' impossible." Shawyer stands by his theoretical work. His company, Satellite Propulsion Research (SPR), has constructed demonstration engines, which he says produce thrust using a tapering resonant cavity filled with microwaves. He is adamant that this is not a perpetual motion machine, and does not violate the law of conservation of momentum because different reference frames apply to the drive and the waves within it. Shawyer's big challenge, he says, has been getting people who will actually look into his claims rather than simply dismissing them. Such extravagant claims are usually associated with s

by merrie  9-24-2008    2
While the United States and Israel left their ambassadorial seats empty, here is the Jew-hatred greeted by enthusiasm at today’s U.N. In its entire history, the United Nations General Assembly has never adopted a resolution dedicated to denouncing and combating the scourge of antisemitism in all its forms. Now we know why. Less than half of U.N. members are fully free democracies and among them there is no consensus that discrimination and demonization of Jews and the Jewish state is wrong. On the contrary, at the U.N. vicious antisemitism is met by a round of applause. — Anne Bayefsky is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and at Touro College. She is also editor of www.EyeontheUN.org..

"It's sickening to think I've been using this phone near my face when it was used to take all of these photos," said the startled customer, speaking to the Australian Daily Telegraph. "What would've happened if that phone was bought for a child?" The store has asked to see the images, and is investigating the matter. "We take any incidence of this nature very seriously and we will investigate it fully," says a spokesperson. "We've asked the customer to bring us the phone to ascertain the nature of the images."

Long-distance demonstration of solar-powered wireless power transmission achieved
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  9-17-2008    4
In the longer term, with sufficient investments in space infrastructure, space solar power can be built from materials from space. The full environmental benefits of space solar power derive from doing most of the work outside of Earth's biosphere. With materials extraction from the Moon or near-Earth asteroids, and space-based manufacture of components, space solar power would have essentially zero terrestrial environmental impact. Only the energy receivers need be built on Earth.

"Yankee Hegemony Is Finished," Says Chavez
zalisan
by zalisan  9-14-2008    1
Chavez has called the U.S. Navy's newly re-established Fourth Fleet a threat. On Wednesday, he said he's sure "nuclear submarines pass under our noses" off Venezuela's coast. He said Venezuela is aiming to strengthen its "defensive capability with our strategic allies, and Russia is one of them." Later, Chavez called the U.S. the "empire" as he addressed troops at the christening of a newly built coast guard patrol ship. "Every day, relations between Venezuela and Russia will continue to deepen." He dismissed comparisons to the Cold War, but mentioned Cuba while saying he had been reviewing flight theory in a simulator in hopes of flying one of the Russian planes. Addressing his close friend Fidel Castro, Chavez said: "I'm going to fly a Tu-160. Fidel, I'm going to fly low past you there."

No Flowers for 9/11 Victims, Stones Thrown at Buses
merrie
by merrie  9-14-2008
Last week Freddy Thielemans, the Socialist Mayor of Brussels, had prohibited the 9/11 demonstration near the Brussels WTC towers. Mr Thielemans banned the demo arguing that the Brussels WTC towers are situated near an immigrant neighbourhood and that it is inappropriate to hold such a demonstration during Ramadan. An appeal against the Mayor’s ban was rejected by the Council of State, Belgium’s highest administrative court. Last year, Mr Thielemans also banned a demonstration in remembrance of the 9/11 atrocities. When the demonstration went ahead anyway, the police savagely beat up the demonstrators and arrested most of them, including Mario Borghezio, an Italian MEP (member of the European Parliament) for the Lega Nord. Mr Borghezio’s arrest led to an official complaint from the Italian government and to Belgium formally apologizing and assuring that in future it will do “everything possible to guarantee the immunity of MEPs.”
