White America has never liked social insurance for people of color
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  9-16-2009    3
More: Meanwhile, there has been a massive expansion in government-sponsored welfare going disproportionately to the white and affluent. What the political scientist Christopher Howard calls the hidden welfare state includes the tax-favored employer-provided health insurance that most working-age Americans depend on, as well as the home mortgage interest deduction and the childcare and child tax credits. Affluent and educated workers are more likely to work for employers who provide private health benefits than are low-skilled workers and employees of small businesses. Personal tax benefits like the home mortgage interest deduction are available only to the top half of households who pay federal income taxes, and are unavailable to lower-income workers who pay payroll taxes but no income taxes. In many cases, the benefits of this tax-credit welfare state increase with income.

Catalogue of Liberal Lies About National Healthcare Part IV
merrie
by merrie  9-13-2009    1
while mandating a list of services -- i.e. every "medical" service with a powerful lobby -- which is why Joe and Ruth Zelinsky, both 88, of Paterson, N.J., are both covered in case either one of them ever needs a boob job. The "public option" trigger is something other than a national takeover of health care. Why does the government get to decide when the "trigger" has been met, allowing it to do something terrible to us? Either the government is better at providing goods and services or the free market is -- and I believe the historical record is clear on that. Thinking more broadly, how about triggers for paying taxes? Under my "public option" plan, citizens would not have to pay taxes until a trigger kicks in. National health care will not cover abortions or illegal immigrants. This appeared in an earlier installment of "Liberal Lies About Health Care," but I keep seeing Democrats like Howard Dean and Rep. Jan Schakowsky on TV angrily shouting

David Brooks: Getting real reform in health care
masbury
by masbury  9-5-2009
"Instead of true reform we got a series of bills that essentially cement the present system in place. The proposals do not fundamentally challenge the fee-for-service system. They don’t make Americans more accountable for their own health care spending. They don’t reduce costs. They just add more people into the mess we’ve got."

An Acquaintance with Payday Advance Loans
ronald25
by ronald25  9-3-2009
Some people find Payday advance most suitable for their urgent needs. The emergence of Payday advance loans revolved around getting away from the lengthy documentation process and making the process a lot faster than other conventional loans. These loans also consider the clients problems and credit challenge. The rate of interest is a bit high and the loan is available in both fixed and variable forms. It is as per the customers, to choose the best suitable loan for them.

Here Are Some More Taxes From Which You Should Probably Avert Your Eyes " Capping the tax break on itemized deductions at 28 percent, as President Barack Obama had proposed, or freezing the top deduction rate at 35 percent when the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010. The first scenario would raise $168 billion, while the second would collect $90 billion. " Issue tax credit bonds to pay for the proposed Medicaid expansion, raising $75 billion. " Charge fees to pharmaceutical manufacturers, bringing in as much as $20 billion, and insurance providers, raising $75 billion. " Raise taxes on sodas and sugary drinks. A 3-cent hike could pick up $30 billion, and a 10-cent hike could make $100 billion. This one already appears out of favor: Many senators have specifically ruled out the sugar tax, and a Senate Democratic source said it was the one option that was clearly not gaining traction with committee members.

Economic Credulus Part II
merrie
by merrie  7-11-2009    2
Seeing as we now own GM, theoretically it should be easier for us to make that happen. Pro-rate it based on what percentage of each company’s final product is actually made in America. I’d suggest shooting a few overpaid under performing chief executives, too, as long as we’re going into wartime crisis mode. You know what they say. Nothing focuses the mind like an execution. Divert all other allocated stimulus funds to actual shovel-ready projects. Stuff that needs to be built or fixed. Anything that needs to be researched or studied or is based on developing a new theoretical economy, as opposed to boosting the one that actually exists, sorry. Boost military spending, recruiting and pay. It’s clear none of the threats to the United States have evaporated, even though everyone likes us better. The military is stressed, in need of a refit. This is also a great alternative to boosting unemployment payments.

Reminder Of Obama Campaign Promise: Net Spending Cut
merrie
by merrie  3-13-2009    1
Your other deductions with face similar limits. For a couple with adjusted gross income about 250K, I'm estimating a marginal tax rate without additional social security taxes of around 52%, 64%, including the employer share, if new social security taxes added. Tax the rich? My friends in this income bracket tend to have have high mortgages, work 60-80 hours a week, pay 40-50K or more a year for child care (a nanny is necessary when you often work into the late evening--and even day care for two kids in the DC area costs close to 40K a year), and have six figures worth of student loans, primarily from professional school, that they are still paying off. In other words, approximately 100K of their pretax income is taken up by their student loans and child care costs, which are the equivalent of "startup costs".

A Backlash Against Obama's Budget
merrie
by merrie  3-6-2009    3
LOBBYISTS PLAN PROTESTS So business is hitting hard on the theme that the budget will squeeze vitality out of the economy. Says Jay Timmons, head of government affairs at the National Association of Manufacturers: "They're taking a tremendous amount of money out of the private sector, which will hamper the ability of business to create and retain jobs." The American Petroleum Institute plans to battle Obama's proposals to reduce the industry's tax breaks through presentations to newspaper editorial boards and visits to Washington by top oil company executives and employees, plus drop-ins by ordinary shareholders. The messages: Obama will increase U.S. reliance on foreign oil by eliminating the deduction for drilling in the U.S. and put at risk up to 6 million jobs directly and indirectly reliant on the industry. "They are going to push more of the investment offshore," said Mark Kibbe, the institute's chief lobbyist.
