Exposed: GOP Congressman Who Yelled "You Lie" at Obama Speech Received $240,000 from Health Care Ind

by JackieDel  9-15-2009
It was not the first time Wilson — attorney, U.S. Army vet and former aide to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond — has raised eyebrows by shouting at political opponents. Seven years ago this month, the then-freshman Wilson appeared on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” with five-term Congressman Bob Filner (D-Calif.) to discuss whether to go to war in Iraq, action that Filner opposed but Wilson supported. In the course of the discussion, Filner noted that the U.S. supplied weapons to Saddam Hussein’s regime during the Iran-Iraq War — a fact revealed by the investigation into the Iran-Contra Affair, which discovered the Reagan administration secretly sold weapons to Iran, then under an arms embargo, to win support for freeing U.S. hostages in Lebanon and to fund the Nicaraguan contras, a counterrevolutionary rebel force that was fighting the country’s government.

But Wait! There’s More with the NTIA Congress adopted the Broadband Data Improvement Act in 2008 to compile of map of the nation showing which areas have broadband and which do not. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is getting the information, but the Obama Administration has decided to use the NTIA to get more than the law requires. Beyond the general data on which parts of the nation have high speed internet access and is it cable or DSL, Obama wants to know down to the individual what the individual has and how much the individual pays. Specifically, the NTIA is now requiring internet provides to give the government “average revenue per end user and data regarding type, technical specification or location of broadband infrastructure,” i.e. your home address, IP address, how much you pay, and where the connection is at your house. The law does not require it. Congress does not want it. The NTIA admits the information will not be used

Wisconsin Court Rejects Lawsuit Challenging New Voters; AG Vows to Appeal
raisins4peace
by raisins4peace  10-26-2008    1
Sometimes the political system makes me sad. Continuing, "The GAB said conducting such matches before November would cast doubt on the eligibility of voters based solely on unreliable databases and would create chaos for overworked election officials who would have to further investigate the discrepancies to determine the eligibility of voters ... HAVA doesn't specify any penalty for not matching; it leaves it to states to decide what to do ... Shortly thereafter, on September 10, Van Hollen, sued, on the basis that the state was violating HAVA by not conducting matches of records. Wisconsin planned to conduct matches only on voters who registered after August 6, 2008, when the statewide registration database became operational. The attorney general sued to get the state to retroactively match all voters who registered since Jan. 1, 2006, which the GAB said would involve about 1.23 million voters."

Appeals Court Sides With Ohio Secretary of State
merrie
by merrie  10-16-2008    1
"The ... Court of Appeals has halted another partisan lawsuit in Ohio," she said. "Under the Help America Vote Act, this verification process is not and has not been permitted to be used to determine a voter's eligibility." The orders stemmed from a lawsuit the Ohio Republican Party filed against Brunner, whom Chairman Bob Bennett called "the most partisan secretary of state in Ohio history." "It's a shame we don't have transparency in this election. She has done everything she can to help her candidate," Bennett said. "To not even check the registrations is a travesty of the first class." Bennett said the party's lawyers would determine its next step, including whether to appeal. A message seeking comment was left late Friday at the office of Bill Todd, a lawyer for the party.

Judge Orders Ohio Sec of State to Comply with Federal Law
merrie
by merrie  10-10-2008    3
“Her refusal to comply with federal law raises serious concerns about her ability to objectively oversee this election. It’s especially troubling in light of her connection to ACORN and that group’s stunning confession this week of fraudulent registration activity happening right here in Ohio.” Brunner’s effort to fight the court order comes just two days after the Democrat activist group ACORN admitted to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections that the group engages in fraudulent voter registration activity. Ohio ACORN officials “blamed the elections board for not scrutinizing ACORN’s suspicious cards,” claiming the group “can’t be expected to catch everything.”

Voter Registration Shut Down
glennbah
by glennbah  10-1-2008
If the shutdown goes as planned, it will seriously impair the ability of states to process new voter registrations before the November 4 election. Who would this impact? New voters, as well as people who re-register because they have moved, who do not have state-issued driver's licenses or non-driver's IDs. Those citizens are disproportionately older, African-American, and low-income

U.S. Terrorism Watch Tops 1 Million
blueridge
by blueridge  7-15-2008    1
This over-the-top dragnet has included people like Sen. Kennedy, Kat Stevens, and recently a former federal prosecutor! 50,000 individuals are included on the Transportation Security Administration "no-fly" or "selectee" lists that subject them to travel bans, arrest or additional screening. The Justice Department's former top criminal prosecutor says the government's terror watch list likely has caused thousands of innocent Americans to be questioned, searched or otherwise hassled. Former Assistant Attorney General Jim Robinson would know: he's one of them. More than 30,000 airline passengers had asked the Homeland Security Department to clear their names from the list as of October 2006.

Welcome To The Machine
sahara
by sahara  5-9-2008    6
To date, every major commercial TV network has failed to report this story, covering up their complicity and keeping the existence of this scandal from their audiences. More than two weeks after the New York Times reported on the Penatgon's military analyst program to sell controversial policies such as the invasion of Iraq, the broadcast television news outlets implicated in the program are hoping to tough out the scandal by refusing to report it. Recently Media Matters of America (MMA) reported that, according to a search of the Nexis database, "the three major broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- have still not mentioned the report at all." Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro and three dozen colleagues have sent a letter to the Department of Defense Inspector General calling for an investigation of this "propaganda campaign aimed at deliberately misleading the American public."

The Conservtive Gov't of Canada is imitating the Bushies
zasel
by zasel  5-6-2008
Canada has always been far more democratic than the U.S. when it concerns access to information and transparency in government. Not perfect, for sure, but terrific compared to some of the tricks used in my home country of the U.S. But since the Conservative government, which is essentially made up of remnants of the failed Reform Party, has come to power, they have done everything in their power to imitate the machinations of the Bush administration and its policies of secrecy and outright lying. This article explains how they have now, without any notice whatsoever, closed down the access to information database that is used by journalists and the public to track the goings on in government. Canada must dump Stephen Harper and his gang of regressive assholes, and bring back transparency in government before the entire system turns into a carbon copy of the Bush administration. Harper has said his political hero is George W. Bush.
