POPS2nd Annual International Islamic Cartoon Contest! 1. Skold feels that most citizens in Western nations are probably not aware that most Islamic nations have never signed onto the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, which states (in Article 19) that "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression..." 2. “Besides those who send in sarcastic cartoons, I urge Muslims to send in their own positive cartoons related to Islam so that non-Muslims can learn to appreciate their humor,” said Skold, referring to a long history of humor in Islam.

POPSDanish Cartoonist Attacked OMG!!! This is awful! What we need to do now, is PANIC! We need to fear all foreigners! We need a "Homeland Security" Department! We need to give up all our rights and freedoms to be able to eradicate these evil-doers!! Why can't WE have a Patriot Act?!? Something needs to be done!! Muslims are gonna chop all our heads off!! Waaaah!! . Oh... wait a minute. We Danes are not as easily spooked as some and we kinda like our freedom of speech and civil rights, etc. Maybe we should just let law enforcement handle this. Yeah, I suppose a more calm, collected and sane approach would be better. .:) http://bit.ly/5CFMjr

POPS‘Chicago Man’ Charged In Mumbai Attacks a Pakistani-based militant group. New charges also were unsealed today against a retired major in the Pakistani military, Abdur Rehman, accusing him of conspiracy in planning an attack on a Danish newspaper and some of its employees. Headley and another Chicago man, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, were initially arrested in the Denmark case, charged with plotting an attack on the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten out of revenge for a dozen cartoons printed in 2005 depicting the prophet Muhammad. Rana has denied involvement in a terror plot. Authorities said Headley has been cooperating with investigators since FBI agents arrested him at O’Hare in October. A somewhat misleading headline. But it is even more troubling that we allowed someone like this in our country. http://bit.ly/8eUQuP Sweetness N Light blog Related Articles: * How Pakistan’s ISI Supports The Taliban * Laugh Riot: Muslims Worry About Image * Report: Mumbai Hostages

POPS Chicago’s “Good Times” Canceled: DynOmite! All I have to say is, where the hell were our international protocol and intelligence teams? Why didn’t someone over at the State Department tell us about this Danish policy before we put everything on the line to bring the Olympic games to the capital of Pay-To-Play cities? We just assumed that we would be treated to the same fawning adulation and deference we get in the USA: the country that invented free speech. We arrived with soaring expectations, only to have the whole thing blow up in our face. Thanks, State, once again. I’m beginning to think that Hillary didn’t really want that job. Insults are under threat in many countries. The World Press Freedom Committee earlier this year published a survey, "The Right to Offend, Shock or Disturb," which details how laws against insults are being used to squelch free speech, including opposition to the government. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748704471504574451712299324476.html

POPSYale Nixes Muhammad Cartoons in New Book Many Muslims consider any depiction of Muhammad to be blasphemous. But other writers and artists have been willing to risk even violent reprisals for the sake of free speech. Author Sherry Jones has weathered threats for writing "The Jewel of Medina," a novel that depicts sex scenes involving Muhammad and his bride Aisha. Her original publisher, Random House, put the book on an indefinite hold following concerns that its content would be offensive to Muslims. "I decided to take a stand for free speech and publish my books in spite of threats and violence because I wanted to make a positive difference in the world," said Jones, who will publish a sequel, "The Sword of Medina," in the fall.

POPSWill Geert Wilders Show His Film on the Koran? That's about to change with the expected television premier on January 25 of an un-named film by a leading Dutch politician Geert Wilders dealing with the Koran. Wilders in the past has compared it to Hitler's Mein Kampf and wants it banned; the film will likely make arguments along these lines: "With this film I'm trying to show not only in words but also images exactly what I mean," he says. Unlike the British, American, Danish governments or the Vatican, the Dutch government has prepared. It has adopted a two-track policy of (1) trying to stop the screening and, should that fail, (2) getting ready for crisis mode. An article in today's Volkskrant, "Vrees voor rellen rond Koran-film van Wilders" (translated as "Fear of riots over Wilders' Koran film") provides some details. First, the government is trying to shut things down: FULL ARTICLE http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2007/12/will-geert-wilders-show-his-film-on-the-koran.html

POPSHands Off Mohammed!!! Fear seems to have censored the publishing of a book about Mohammed. As the author of the piece points out: "It is condescending to treat Muslims like excitable children who cannot cope with the probing, mocking treatment we hand out to Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism. It is perfectly consistent to protect Muslims from bigotry while challenging the bigotries and absurdities within their holy texts." Doesn't seem like too much to ask.

POPSAl-Qaeda: the cracks begin to show "Speaking to an Egyptian newspaper, Fadl went further. “Zawahiri and his emir Bin Laden are extremely immoral,” he said. His words sent tremors throughout the jihadist world. Al-Qaeda does not have a central organisation and has been a movement based more on ideas, rather than concrete plans for political change. Here was one of its former theorists attacking those very ideas. "

POPSRevenge for Danish Cartoons Blamed for Pak Blast But Richer, former deputy chief of operations for the CIA, says that a recent interview given by CIA director Michael Hayden may also have been a factor in the attack. Central Intelligence Agency Director General "Michael Hayden made some very strong comments about al-Qaida not necessarily being on the run, but much more tactical in nature, diminished in stature worldwide, particularly in nature of Saudi Arabia and Iraq," he said. "They've got to do something. You know, this may not have been an al-Qaida attack, but it is an attack that draws attention back to the fact that these groups can take action."

POPS17 Danish Newspapers Print Blasphemous Cartoon * Editors say they printed the caricature to take a stand against self-censorship Thursday, February 14, 2008 The Danish Foreign Ministry said meanwhile it was following the situation closely in the world. Members of Denmark’s Muslim community have distanced themselves from the murder plot revealed on Tuesday, but were opposed to the publication of the cartoon on Wednesday. Imam Walid Abdul Pedersen, a Protestant who converted to Islam, said, “It’s not a good idea to reproduce it and the newspapers could have defended the cartoonist differently, without resorting to provocation.” “It’s good to have a dialogue on freedom of expression, but you shouldn’t seek out a confrontation from the start,” he said.

POPSHello! Is Sanity in the House? By some people's reasoning it should be allowable for Jews to riot because Joe's BBQ opens and serves pulled pork platters? Christians should storm the gates because Wal-Mart is not keeping the Sabbath holy? Catholics should go berserk when someone doesn't genuflect before Mary? Why aren't more people standing up and saying these crazy people are crazy? We're all supposed to adhere to Sharia law? How utterly absurd and pointless.

POPSSteve Emerson exposes Islamic guises in talk to World Affairs Council As evidence of Islamist intolerance of Western principles of free speech, Emerson pointed to the 2005 cartoon controversy, in which a worldwide outcry followed publication of a dozen images of Mohammed commissioned by a Danish newspaper. Most American newspapers refused to publish the Danish cartoons. Bowing to pressure from Islamic groups, Hollywood filmmakers altered the plot of one movie so the villains weren't Muslim, he said. By capitulating to intimidation, Americans embolden radical groups that have no interest in the preservation of our freedoms, he said. Emerson said these groups profess outrage over cartoons, books or films yet refuse to condemn by name groups that commit or support terrorist acts.
