POPSPractice Run for What the Future Could be Like.
Four thousand police were on duty plus 2500 National Guard plus Coast Guard and Air Force and dozens of other security agencies. A thousand volunteers from other police forces were sworn in to help out. Police were dressed in battle gear, bulky black ninja turtle outfits: helmets with clear visors, strapped on body armor, shin guards, big boots, batons, and long guns. In addition to helicopters, the police had hundreds of cars and motorcycles , armored vehicles, monster trucks, small electric go-karts. There were even passenger vans screaming through town so stuffed with heavily armed ninja turtles that the side and rear doors remained open. No terrorists showed up at the G20. Since no terrorists showed up, those in charge of the heavily armed security forces chose to deploy their forces around those who were protesting. Not everyone is delighted that 20 countries control 80% of the world’s resources. Several thousand of them chose to express their displeasure by protest

POPSAn Aspirin A Day Keep the Doctor Away, Doesn’t It? The idea of preventing coronary artery disease, the forerunner of heart attacks (myocardial infarction, or MI) is well founded. Treating high blood pressure, lowering raised cholesterol levels, losing weight, exercising, and stopping smoking are all effective ways of lowering your chances of having an MI. Aspirin has both anti-platelet and anti-inflammatory effects, both useful properties when it comes to reducing the likelihood of coronary thrombosis, or clotting. Almost all studies have shown an increased risk of hemorrhage with aspirin use. One baby aspirin (81 mg) a day, taken with food, is enough. There's no advantage in taking higher doses for this particular use, and you may well increase the chance of side effects. Go to the article for more details of pros and cons.

POPSCalifornia’s Real Death Panels: Insurers Deny 21% of Claims “Every claim that is denied represents a real patient enduring pain and suffering. Every denial has real, sometimes fatal consequences”, says Deborah Burger, RN, CNA/NNOC co-president. PacifiCare denied 40% of all California claims in the first six months of 2009. Cigna, which gained notoriety two years ago for denying a liver transplant to 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan of Northridge, Calif. and then reversing itself, tragically too late to save her life, was still rejecting one-third of all claims for the first half of 2009. California Blues rejected 28% of claims in the first half of 2009. In 2008, six days before RN Kim Kutcher of Dana Point, Calif., was scheduled to have special back surgery, Blue Cross denied authorization for the procedure as “investigational” even though the lumbar artificial disc she was to receive had FDA approval.

POPSArtist exposes his soul...and his mother's stuff This artist comes at his work from a very interesting place. I love readymades and in general, works that contain commercial products like the toothpaste tubes in the photo. The exhibit on the surface seems curious and somewhat whimsical like a Duchamp but from what the review says its far more intense. I'm looking forward to seeing it but at the same time I wonder if I will feel uncomfortable peering so deeply into his (and his mother's) life, soul, pain, etc...even though they've invited me to do so.

POPSScrum meeting late fees It's good to see someone speaking out against this practice. Also nice to see Rachel and Tobias chiming in. Punishing lateness avoids the root cause and can breed resentment as the team feel that the process is being imposed.

POPSAre Our Markets Being Manipulated By "Rogues" Or Firms?
“Sergey Aleynikov, an ex-Goldman Sachs computer programmer, was arrested July 3 after arriving at Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. officials said. Aleynikov, 39, who has dual American and Russian citizenship, is charged in a criminal complaint with stealing the trading software. At a court appearance July 4 in Manhattan, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Facciponti told a federal judge that Aleynikov’s alleged theft poses a risk to U.S. markets. Aleynikov transferred the code, which is worth millions of dollars, to a computer server in Germany, and others may have had access to it, Facciponti said, adding that New York-based Goldman Sachs may be harmed if the software is disseminated.” The next sentence is particularly eye-opening: “The bank has raised the possibility that there is a danger that somebody who knew how to use this program could use it to manipulate markets in unfair ways,” Facciponti said.” J.S. Kim who runs an independent investment research

POPSI'M TOO BUSY........Myths=Excuses/Facts=Reality We all lead busy lives. But if we were injured to some degree because of a crime or dead and we may have been able to prevent either from happening, we wouldn't have our lives to decide how to spend our time.

POPSA pilgrim’s journey to the Great Better After a while you learn The subtle difference Between holding a hand And chaining a soul. And you learn That love doesn’t mean leaning And company doesn’t mean security. And you begin to learn That kisses aren’t compromise And presents aren’t promises. And you begin to accept your defeats With your head up and your eyes ahead With the grace of a woman or a man Not the grief of a child. And you learn to build all your loads on today Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans And futures have a way of falling down in midflight. And after a while you learn That even sunshine burns if you ask too much. So you plant your own garden And decorate your own soul Instead of waiting for someone to buy you flowers. And you learn That you really can endure That you really are strong And you really do have worth. And you learn. And you learn. With every failure you learn. Anonymous
