POPSTeens killed in cyber bullying 'epidemic' Scary article. The numbers are real and the govt is doing nothing. At least pretend and run programs teaching kids how to handle these situations. Have a hotline. Use screen shots as evidence. Something is wrong (and the govt will probably renew the call for censorship - so that the kids can't swear at each other).

POPSCyberbullying of Teens Common
"Why do so few teenagers tell their parents about being bullied online? The most common reason for not telling an adult, cited by half the bullied participants, was that teens believe they "need to learn to deal with it." In addition, 31 percent reported that they do not tell because they are concerned their parents might restrict their Internet access. This concern was especially common among girls between the ages of 12 and 14, with 46 percent fearing restrictions, compared with 27 percent of boys in the same age group. One-third of 12-to-14-year-olds reported that they didn't tell an adult out of fear that they could get into trouble with their parents. Many parents have little understanding of their children's Internet use." "Of those participants who experienced bullying, 51 percent said the bullying was done by schoolmates, 43 percent said they were bullied by someone they knew only online and 20 percent said they were bullied by someone they knew, but who was not from s

POPSBeverly Hills case blends free speech, public schools and cyber-bullying "In the Beverly Vista case, in which attorneys for both sides are in the stage of filing motions, the friends had been out of school for about two hours when they talked about another girl at school, directing some profanity at the girl but making no threats. The girl who recorded that conversation on her personal digital camera posted it on YouTube that evening. The video was viewed by about 20 people, including the girl who was talked about in the recording, according to the lawsuit. In an Instant Messenger chat, that girl told the one who posted the video to "keep it up for now," court papers allege. The next day, the girl and her mother went to the school's administrative office. School officials summoned the student responsible for posting the video and demanded that she delete the video on the spot, saying she had humiliated the girl who was talked about, according to court documents."

POPSWords Are Being Criminalized It's all part of growing up and now it is a crime? What is emotional distress for one person, might be "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words could never hurt me" for another.

POPSBullies Love Him "It remains unclear why Billy became a target at age 12; schoolyard anthropology can be so nuanced. Maybe because he was so tall, or wore glasses then, or has a learning disability that affects his reading comprehension. Or maybe some kids were just bored. Or angry." Whatever. The truth of the matter is that everyone has the right to enjoy their lives without being harassed either emotionally or physically. One can say that it's just kids being kids, but I've seen my share of those kids "grow up" into cyber bullies. I, for one, don't get any perverse pleasure from tormenting others and those who do? Well, my patience grows thin very easily with jerks. "In ninth grade, a couple of the same boys started a Facebook page called “Every One That Hates Billy Wolfe.” It featured a photograph of Billy’s face superimposed over a likeness of Peter Pan, and provided this description of its purpose:

POPSDownside To Technology I clipped this story a while back from the NY times. There is also an interesting segment about freedom of speech on Dr. Phil's website. I recommend watching the whole show.

POPSMySpace anonymity contributes to teen suicide. I cannot say that it CAUSED the suicide. One night of attacks will not lead to that. This must have been a problem that had been building up, but these attacks were the last straw. I can't believe that Megan's parents can completely blame this other family. The fact that the daughters were previously friends (and the Drew mother and daughter conspired together) is enough to prove there was a previously building-tension.

POPS1/3 of teenagers have been targets of Cyberbullying This is the take home clip: "Ghyslain Raza, also known as the "Star Wars Kid", learned this the hard way. In 2002, the somewhat overweight and slightly awkward Canadian adolescent made a video of himself playing with a pretend light sabre and left it lying around at school. When his classmates found the video in 2003, they posted it online as a joke.Raza was so upset he finished the school year from a psychiatric ward. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't just his friends who found the video amusing. According to UK marketing firm The Viral Factory, it became the internet's most downloaded video of 2006." Be careful who you laugh at.
