POPSPQ | Randy Johnson "I really wanted to go out on my terms," Johnson said. "I just feel like there's not a lot more for me to do in this game. I just think it's a natural progression when you play this long. Eventually you have to say it's time." ___ http://google.twi.bz/rv ___ http://me.twi.bz/W | http://altacities.com

POPS Honoring Satchel Paige On Saturday in Cincinnati, baseball will stage its Civil Rights Game, an event created three years ago to draw attention to the game’s racial legacy, which pre-1947 meant players of color were excluded from wearing a big-league uniform.

POPS"The Bird": Gone But Not Forgotten So sad. What a wonderful character he was. Showed up out of nowhere and won just about every award possible in his first season (check out the amazing stats below). He was supremely talented, and baseball fans - regardless of their loyalty to the home team - adopted him as their own. He had a gentle goofyness about him and the irony that he looked like Jim Henson's beloved character "Big Bird" was hard to ignore. Detroit and Major League Baseball caught lighting in a bottle that summer and by the time his rookie season was over, "The Bird" was too. He was never the same again, but he left the kind of indelible mark on the game that few players since have. Baseball sure could use a bright light like Mark Fidrych again. The Bird is gone, but not forgotten...R.I.P.

POPSNo More Cash for Baseball Awarda Starting in 2013, the baseball writers will disqualify for post season awards any player that has a bonus clause in his contract for getting votes. That should take care of any appearance of impropriety - who's to say a writer can't be bribed into voting for a player? But it also makes pay for performance tougher. And with teams not required to disclose contract terms, could the new policy ever really be enforced?
