POPSKumbaya my O! Kumbaya These values and differences will be a real shock to him when they don't roll over and acquiesce to his every desire. Kind of like a 16 year old entering the work force and being surprised that management won't let you help make the rules...

POPSMcCain's Surge in Iraq Crippling Efforts in Afghanistan The death rate for American troops in Afghanistan last month was four times that of Iraq. The last two months have been the deadliest of the war for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan since 2001. And today, Afghanistan sustained the deadliest single terrorist attack since 9/11 when suspected Taliban militants blew up the Indian embassy in Kabul. This is directly attributable to negligent policies set forth by the Bush administration--an administration dangerously obsessed with Iraq at the expense of the Real Global War on Terror. When many were urging the U.S. to focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan in early 2007, the Bush administration--with the support of Senator John McCain--launched the "surge" of troops into Baghdad. Unfortunately, Iraq is not, as John McCain says, the "central front" in the War on Terror--and it never has been. If there is such a thing, it is in Afghanistan and Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

POPSNew GI Bill Close to Final Approval The package also includes a monthly living stipend, an annual book allowance, and money for tutorial assistance, along with many other features. At this point it gets complicated, however, in terms of how they're going to actually implement this thing. But for all of you affected by this, Maze explains: Benefits increases take effect as soon as the war funding bill is signed into law by President Bush, which will happen in the next few weeks. But veterans now in school will not get the higher amounts right away because lawmakers are giving the Veterans Affairs Department until Aug. 1, 2009, to calculate and pay amounts that will vary by state and by school. Retroactive payments will have to be made. Also, anyone who had not previously enrolled in the GI Bill will have to wait until Aug. 1, 2009, to collect any payments.

POPS Didn't Realize What He Was Saying? Once again, this suggests that there is too little adult supervision of a candidate unaccustomed to speaking on the world stage about issues in which there are lots of code words, indeed in which every word (e.g. “preconditons,” “immediate withdrawal”) has meaning to Americans’ foes and friends.

POPSTaiwan's Interesting Democracy A democracy, you say? One where the people are concerned about the appearance of impropriety, you say? Impossible, I say, impossible! But it's true! And it's in Taiwan. They actually raise valid concerns about conflicts of interest in high government officials - before the corruption scandal, not after! How come we never thought of that? This blows a giant hole in the "Asian Values" argument, that dictatorship and corruption are inherent elements of "The Asian Mind" that cannot be changed. (Go suck on that one, Lee Kuan Yew!) But seriously, given the track record of the current Taiwanese first-lady, I would say it's better that Chow keeps her job, because this way she won't have to embezzle from the government when she wants to buy new earrings!

POPSBBC UK: 5,000 Children Groomed for Prostitution "It happened every night. There were loads of men involved." Her voice cracks. "You couldn't keep count." It was like a conveyor belt, she recalls. A conveyor belt of men all expecting sex. She was only 14. Jane clearly remembers the sheer, terrifying numbers of men who would be brought to her bed at night. Jane has, to a certain extent, repaired her life - she has a job and her relationship with her parents remains strong. The long-term damage, however, is profound, and she suffers nightmares, flashbacks and depression. As she puts it: "I was just this innocent little girl who went from playing with her dolls to having sex with lots of different men." And unpalatable though it may be to confront, there are, even now, many other innocent little girls at risk of being forced into the same sickening transition.

POPSThe Gaza bombshell The hypocrisy of the USA is astounding. It recognises the "independence" of Kosovo led by the UCK (Kosovo Liberation Army), yet encourages boycotts of Hamas-led Gaza. It complains about genocide in Darfur, yet stands idly by while Israil rains cluster bombs on the children of Lebanon.

POPSGroup Claims Iran Speeding Up Nuke Plans The NCRI has at least twice given detailed information to the IAEA that IAEA inspectors later verified, including the original information that exposed Iran's uranium-enrichment program and the location of those facilities in 2002. On at least one other occasion, however, the IAEA was unable to verify information the NCRI provided. NCRI leaders said their latest effort to locate the alleged nuclear-warhead facility was triggered by the Dec. 3 release of a U.S. National Intelligence Estimate concluding that Iran halted its nuclear-weaponization efforts in 2003. The NCRI is eager to refute that finding. The report effectively ended speculation in Washington about a potential U.S. military strike against Iran to cripple its nuclear program. It also undercut U.S.-led efforts to pressure Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program.

POPSIf a Dollar Drops, Does Anybody Hear It? People do not seem to be listening, we are in trouble here, and continue to turn a blind eye to what is happening. Members of the CFR really do not care which candidate is elected, as long as they are a member of the CFR. Look it up, chances are the candidate you are supporting is "in", unless it is Ron Paul. Look further: By David Rockefeller’s own admission the CFR was created for one purpose. The design, manipulation and creation of a New World Order. A single government that controls planet earth. A planetary government run by powerful bankers." Remember, we have been warned: ”The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.” – Thomas Jefferson

POPSWhy America Will Survive George W. Bush Otto von Bismarck saw how American blunders led to American power and allegedly said that God has a special providence for drunks, fools, and the United States of America. Walter Russell Mead (of the Council on Foreign Relations) puts Bush's 8-year stint in the White House into proper perspective. America's foreign policy has been short-sighted and often self-defeating from the get-go, alternately collaborative, passive, and interventionist. And, yet, miraculously, we always come out ahead. With the unstoppable rise of a global capitalist economy, Mead makes the case that America, for all its past and current faults, will continue to be the inevitable leader of this new international buoyancy. Not even our latest mistakes (unprecedented though they may be) can derail such a powerful incentive that is the modern American world trade system. Which means, more than ever, we're literally all in this together.

POPSOne in Four homeless are Veterans Estimated at 194,254 Veterans are estimated to be homeless, or 25% of the 744,313 homeless on any given night, while they are 11% of the adult population. This must have been a conservative estimate, because I'm sure the homeless love filling out surveys and questionnaires. Of course this is down on the 250,000 20 years ago, but how many of those are still alive? A figure that shocked me is the 11% of the general adult population are Veterans. Does that take into account those on active Duty? How many Americans with 7 figure salaries are expected to serve. Of course they are vital to the ECONOMY. That is being screwed by a prodigal.

POPSAIPAC Agents Charged With Spying -- Rice and Neocons Subpoenaed Look at how the media covers this story below on "Rice Subpoenaed"". Journalism 101 says you headline the main subject, not the peripheral subjects. Let's cut through the double talk on this article that treats Israel, AIPAC and Jewish agents with kid gloves. Headline should read: "AIPAC Charged With Spying -- Rice and Neocons Subpoenaed". Now that would sell newspapers! Now the article goes on to say (listen to this), the lobbyist received information from a "now convicted Pentagon official and passed it on..." (why not name him?). That would be Larry Franklin, no? This article is designed to save AIPAC's arse from a Second round of public humiliation. Look at the special treatment of the "news" for AIPAC! You have to look so close to see the real story here. Notice that two major neocons--Armitage and Wolfowitz are not mentioned in headline either, just Rice. (AIPAC is certain that the neocons will lie for them).

POPSWounded troops overwhelm care This problem has always amazed me. Their can be only a couple of explanations. One would be that the idiots who got us unto this actually believed it would be over by now, which would also suggest that they totally disregarded any advice to the contrary. Or they didn't think anyone would get wounded or maybe they just didn't think it was important enough. The bottom line, why would you not prepare?
