Liberalism: Can it survive?
esundby
by esundby  7-18-2008
Just another clip about bitter liberals. This was written by John Leo in the U.S. News & World Report, March 7th 2005. I clipped a great paragraph that I think sums up so many of the liberals I've encountered(perhaps not all, but many). The entire article is worth a read.

Dostoevskij, La Leggenda del Grande Inquisitore
sophyl
by sophyl  7-18-2008    1

Culture of secrecy and deception
sahara
by sahara  7-17-2008    1
US taxpayers are required to report all foreign financial accounts if their total value exceeds $10,000 at any point during a given year, prosecutors said. Failure to report the accounts can result in a penalty of up to 50 percent of the amount in the accounts. The report states that in some instances, UBS declined to report accounts to the IRS when clients opened them in the names of offshore corporations, trusts, foundations or other entities, even if the bank knew the true beneficial owners were US taxpayers. In Liechtenstein, the report said the royal family's LGT Group contributed to a "culture of secrecy and deception" that enabled clients to "evade US taxes, dodge creditors, and ignore court orders."

Green Demolishing... um, Washing Buffalo
rachaelkeriwilliams
by rachaelkeriwilliams  7-17-2008
Why The Mayor of Buffalo is the Biggest Contributor to Greenhouse Gas in Buffalo, NY. Maybe they just don't understand that by sending perfectly above average sustainably harvested wood products to the dump and building new houses with unsustainably harvested wood they are damaging our planet as well as our culture. How can we as a city claim to be trying to woo green businesses when our actions and policies support this kind of hypocrisy?

The Throw-Away Culture: Do you Own your Stuff?
urbanlife
by urbanlife  7-16-2008    1
Our new economy may be just the motivation people need to stop and think before they toss. If something breaks our first instinct is to throw it away and buy it new, instead of trying to fix it. But even if we wanted to fix it, manufacturers have made it difficult for us to repair, re-use or upgrade our stuff. Mr. Jalopy urges technology companies to create forums for consumers to share ideas, and pushes car companies to sell patterns so people can create accessories like seat covers....he wants companies to make schematics readily available so consumers can fix and re-imagine the objects they buy.

Biocultural Evolution in the 21st Century: The Evolutionary Role of Religion
Djiezes
by Djiezes  7-16-2008
My outline introduces the concept of biocultural evolution, particularly with reference to the Twentieth Century and the prospects for the Twenty-First Century. I then explore the concept of complex distributed systems to characterize all highly creative processes in both culture and nature. Subsequently, I turn to the problem of complexity horizons and the challenge that these present for traditional moral reflections. Humans are then characterized as a Lamarckian wild card in epic of evolution. I close by discussing the evolutionary role of religion. Language Without Numbers: Amazonian Tribe Has No Word To Express 'One,' Other Numbers
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-15-2008    2
However, the MIT team decided to add a new twist--they started with 10 objects and asked the tribe members to count down. In that experiment, the tribe members used the word previously thought to mean "two" when as many as five or six objects were present, and they used the word for "one" for any quantity between one and four. This indicates that "these aren't counting numbers at all," said Gibson. "They're signifying relative quantities." He said this type of counting strategy has never been observed before, although it may also be found in other languages believed to have "one," "two," and "many" counting words.

Rationalization drives the culture war
willhelm
by willhelm  7-15-2008
"According to Dr. Jack Kevorkian, for example, all those reluctant to participate in his rationalization for killing people (including, it turns out, some who are not even ill) are the real problem; the judicial system is "corrupt," the medical profession is "insane," and the press is "meretricious." Of the coroner who found nothing medically wrong with several of his victims, Dr. Kevorkian said that he is a "liar and a fanatical religious nut."
