POPSMarijuana War Up in Smoke!
California here we come! --- An exodus similar to the Great Depression will soon be heading west. Go West, young person, there you will find a new world. But, seriously....the hypocracy of the nation pushing booze and pills massively on TV everyday, while sending pot smokers to jail, is at a turning point. The turning point is that the U.S. will stop using federal law to arrest individual marijuana consumers. This allows each of the 50-states to set their own laws about it...sort of like the idea of our Constitution and democracy intended -- prior to evil leaders trying to use a "War on Drugs," as as excuse before the "Global War on Terrorism," came along. 14 states have already made personal consumption of marijuana a non-criminal offense (so no need to rush out to northern California...although it's thriving out there, no doubt) These states did this change even though it was moot ---- till now. Now, it's not "moot." - more states (like mine) now seeking ballot init

POPSScientist spying for Israel busted by the FBI
An affidavit suggests why FBI agents posed as agents of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad to conduct the sting operation. From 1998 to 2008, the complaint alleges, Nozette was a technical adviser for a consultant company that was wholly owned by the Israeli government. Nozette was paid about $225,000 over that period, the court papers say. Then, in January of this year, Nozette allegedly traveled to another foreign country with two computer thumb drives and apparently did not return with them. Prosecutors also quote an unnamed colleague of Nozette who said the scientist said that if the U.S. government ever tried to put him in jail for an unrelated criminal offense, he would go to Israel or another foreign country and "tell them everything" he knows. The complaint does not allege that the government of Israel or anyone acting on its behalf violated U.S. law. In Jerusalem, Israeli government officials had no immediate comment. The affidavit by FBI agent Leslie Martell s

POPSBuried at Wounded Knee - Fasting for Leonard Leonard who? Leonard Peltier was a mover and shaker in the American Indian Movement. He was THE SCAPEGOAT for a government operation designed to discredit AIM as a quasi-terrorist, criminal group, in the same way they suppressed black consciousness by criminalizing the Black Panthers and killing Huey Newton. Leltier was not killed but has been in prison for years for supposedly shooting and killing an FBI agent with a broken rifle and the lies (now admitted) of someone who was there. What would it feel like to be invisible? Read this and find out.

POPSU.S. Foreign Policy Caused the Taliban Problem
The Taliban responded to Bush’s demand by asking him to furnish evidence of bin Laden’s complicity in the 9/11 attacks. Upon receipt of such evidence, they offered to turn him over to an independent tribunal instead of the United States. Bush never explained why the Taliban’s conditions were unreasonable. After all, as federal judges in the Jose Padilla case, the Zacarias Moussaoui case, and many others have confirmed, terrorism is a federal criminal offense. Thus, while it’s not unusual for one nation to seek the extradition of a foreigner to stand trial for a criminal offense, it’s just as reasonable for the nation receiving the request to be provided evidence that the person has, in fact, committed the crime. Venezuela is currently seeking the extradition from the United States of a man named Luis Posada Carriles, who is accused of bombing a Cuban airliner over Venezuelan skies, a terrorist act that succeeded in killing everyone on board. Venezuela and the United States hav

POPSDrug Decriminalization in Portugal
The political consensus in favor of decriminalization is unsurprising in light of the relevant empirical data. Those data indicate that decriminalization has had no adverse effect on drug usage rates in Portugal, which, in numerous categories, are now among the lowest in the EU, particularly when compared with states with stringent criminalization regimes. Although postdecriminalization usage rates have remained roughly the same or even decreased slightly when compared with other EU states, drug-related pathologies — such as sexually transmitted diseases and deaths due to drug usage — have decreased dramatically. Drug policy experts attribute those positive trends to the enhanced ability of the Portuguese government to offer treatment programs to its citizens — enhancements made possible, for numerous reasons, by decriminalization... The data show that, judged by virtually every metric, the Portuguese decriminalization framework has been a resounding success. Within this succ

POPSFascism Comes to the Hometown Farmers Market "Under the act, every food producer must have a written food safety plan describing likely hazards and preventative controls they have implemented and must abide by "minimum standards related to fertilizer use, nutrients, hygiene, packaging, temperature controls, animal encroachment, and water." DeLauro's act calls for the Food Safety Administration to create a "national traceability system" to retrieve history, use and location of each food product through all stages of production, processing and distribution. Olson believes the regulations could create unjustifiable financial hardships for small farmers and run them out of business. "That is often the purpose of rules and regulations: to get rid of your competition," he said. "Only people who are very, very large can afford to comply. They can hire one person to do paperwork. There's a specialization of labor there, and when you are very small, you can't afford to do all of these things."

POPSItaly misses opertunity to defend free speech. Italian officials had a great opportunity to defend the free speech of it's citizens. But instead they opted to appease the ego of the bigoted catholic leader. One thing people keep forgetting, freedom of speech doesn't protect you from hearing stuff you don't like. In fact when people spout stuff you find offensive, you know it's working.

POPSThe FEC is Ready for Action (hopefully McCain action!)
The new commissioners joining sitting commissioner Ellen Weintraub, a Democrat, are: * Democrat Cynthia L. Bauerly of Minnesota * Republican Caroline C. Hunter of Florida * Republican Donald F. McGahn of D.C. * Republican Matthew S. Petersen of Utah Also, recess appointee Steven T. Walther, a Democrat, was confirmed to a full term, completing the six-member panel. These appointments come after six months during which the FEC could not take official action because it did not have the required minimum of four commissioners, making it impossible to issue advisory opinions or dole out public funding. As we've written about several times, the impasse began when President Bush sent a controversial nominee to the Senate for confirmation. As for the McCain debacle, "Knowingly violating the spending limit is a criminal offense that could put McCain at risk of stiff fines and up to five years in prison." http://www.democrats.org/a/2008/02/democratic_part_8.php

POPSTo Conservatives because they care so much about African-Americans Since conservatives claim to be the historical champions for African-Americans, this little clip lays out the road map that they must take to reclaim their legacy. All conservatives need to do is 1): reform the criminal justice system and 2): strengthen and enforce laws against employment discrimination. It's very simple and will go a long way towards strengthening those African-American families that conservatives claim to care so much about. Indeed, according to the Blumrosen study, at least 1.3 million qualified people of color will face job discrimination in a given year. Or what of the study of temporary agencies in California, which found that white women who are less qualified than their black counterparts, are still three times more likely to be favored in a job search?

POPS"Nowadays the First Amendment is the First Refuge of Scoundrels" Continuation: Section 319(2) reads in part, "Every one who, by communicating statements other than in private conversation, willfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group is guilty of... an indictable offense and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years." In the United States, this provision of the code would almost certainly be struck down because, under the First Amendment, restrictions on speech are apparently prohibited without qualification. This is an excerpt from the eightth chapter of the essay THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS FREE SPEECH AND IT'S A GOOD THING, TOO by STANLEY FISH, OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS. See also the Canadian Criminal Code .
