Not just your average spooks either. Trained in bombing and terror operations. More to be revealed the report says. How would Israel react if Iran spies were caught in their country? (Watch for Israeli "demands" for their release "or else").

Burma Comic Jailed For 45 years
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-22-2008    3
At the time, he seemed to think the government would have no problem with his activities. "No, we never encounter any problems, because we negotiated with them, and we just want to pass our donation parcels. We just want to encourage our people - this is our duty," he told the BBC in an interview just before his arrest. Our correspondent says such breathtakingly disproportionate punishments send two clear messages from the generals who rule Burma: that they will brook no opposition in the lead-up to their carefully managed transition to what they are calling a "discipline-flourishing democracy"; and that they are unconcerned what the rest of the world thinks.

LATimes covers Mexican drug wars
kroqben
by kroqben  11-9-2008    1
" In the year and a half since Calderon launched a crackdown against drug gangs, about 4,100 people have died." it's well past due, but coverage of the madness just below our border will raise awareness of just how dire the situation is, and how it is in our best national interests to actively help the Mexican gov't deal with the situation.

A Forbidden City of words
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-28-2008    2
Recently, a new technique has been developed that involves some software that changes the alignment of Chinese words from horizontal to vertical, and it's very popular. Chinese sentences can be read from left to right, right to left, and top to bottom. For a Chinese person reading from top to bottom is not a problem – it has been like that for thousands of years, until the early 20th century. However, the forbidden vocabulary-seeking mechanism is fooled. When all these methods fail, people can still use mobile phones and text messages, which are not covered by the censoring system yet.

Democrats In Congress Eye Emergency Bailout — And More
merrie
by merrie  9-20-2008    4
But that’s just a start. • Bankruptcy protection for homeowners. Some Democrats see this bill as a golden opportunity to renew their push.... • Social spending and infrastructure funds. The most liberal Democrats are pushing to have an economic stimulus package — with unemployment extensions, infrastructure spending and aid to states — tacked on to the bill. Democratic aides said that more stringent regulations and perhaps a crackdown on CEO compensation is a longer term discussion that may need to wait. • Foreclosure protection. Dodd was intentionally vague when he insisted on foreclosure protection for homeowners..... Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio) said, “We have to communicate the fact that if the big guys fail, then your savings, your retirement, your mortgage will be in trouble.” On the opposite end of the spectrum, “It would be a huge problem if the package were used that way ,” Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) said.

Charges Dropped Against Reporters Arrested At RNC
ratilfar
by ratilfar  9-20-2008
One has to wonder if this was the plan all along, and the real intention was simply to inhibit reporting of abuses against protestors. Or maybe they’re hoping that with the reporters out of court, the media won’t be so interested in covering the 800 or so other arrests. With over forty journalists arrested, there should surely be at least some investigation of police officers involved for trumping up charges too:

Raging Grannies Sing to Support Drumers Circle
deadcowkid
by deadcowkid  9-11-2008
Video of Raging Grannies and Drum Circle Protest. The City erected Plastic fences to stop the event which were removed. One ticket was given out for smoking Marijuana. One of the larger issues is an unconstitutional law , the 15 minute parking lot panic law, which makes it illegal to be in a parking lot for more than 15 minutes, even if you have a car parked. The article at the source is one of the worst misinforming articles I have seen. The Drummers did return and play. Local Fox News was more balanced yet still inaccurate. I Never thought I would say that!

Safer Iraq Attracts Foreign Investors
merrie
by merrie  9-11-2008    1
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's crackdown on Shiite militias this Spring led to a thaw in relations with Sunni governments in the Gulf. That has encouraged investors such as Aqeela to turn to Iraq without fear of falling out of favor with their own governments, says Majed Michel, vice president of the Iraqi American Chamber of Commerce. The projects seek to address long-standing needs in Iraq, such as a severe housing shortage and under-investment in public utilities. Najaf is visited by millions of Shiite tourists a year but infrastructure there is poor. "This is an extraordinarily undercapitalized society," said Todd Schwartz, an economic counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. "There's no question that Iraq can absorb $74 billion and hundreds of billions more." There is plenty of money available as well, added Schwartz, in Gulf monarchies awash in petrodollars.

The Fences have been erected this a.m hours before the protest. "This is merely the newest battle of a war in Santa Cruz. A war against dissent, against the poor, against the homeless, and now against people making music. We challenge these laws and the police crackdown on undesirables -- an effort to "clean up" the streets of Santa Cruz of the young, the very old, immigrants, the unemployed, homeless, the insane, and anyone who resists."

Will there really be any change?
papananook
by papananook  9-8-2008    10
Would Obama be as bad or worse? Likely not. Just the lesser of two evils or what Ralph Nader calls the "evil of two lessers." No choice to settle for in his judgment. Especially when both candidates support global militarism, backing Israel and the Christian Right against Iran, unilaterally attacking Pakistan, staying in Iraq for the duration, upping the ante in Afghanistan, and risking a dangerous Eurasian confrontation with Russia. Both conventions are over. It's Obama v. McCain, and expect the winner to disappoint like always and on what voters say matter most - ending aggressive wars and addressing long-neglected social needs, made all the worse given capitalism's global crisis and both parties' commitment to privilege. After the Democrat convention ended, author, media activist, critic, and independent filmmaker Danny Schechter wrote: "You won't hear a call for a national crackdown on the corporate crime, fraud, and abuse that, in just the last few years, have robbed trilli
