Solemn condemnations have been issued from every forum of soft-power fecklessness — the EU, the U.N., the G-8 foreign ministers — demanding that Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe stop butchering his opponents and step down. Before that, the cause du jour was Burma, where a vicious dictatorship allowed thousands of cyclone victims to die by denying them independently delivered foreign aid, lest it weaken the junta’s grip on power. And then there is Darfur, a perennial for which myriad diplomats and foreign-policy experts have devoted uncountable hours at the finest five-star hotels to deplore the genocide and urgently urge relief. What is done to free these people? Nothing. And who’s going to intervene? The only country that could is the country that in the last two decades led coalitions that liberated Kuwait, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Having sacrificed much blood and treasure in its latest endeavor — the liberation of 25 million Iraqis from the most barbarous tyranny of all

POPSBlushing Blair's Bitch Belatedly Bits Bush Butt! Yes look, he does look like a real cowboy. Here a 'real cowboy' is a lower form of life than a second hand car sales person. Cowboys over here are totally disreputable door-to-door shyster (A shyster is someone who acts in a disreputable, unethical or unscrupulous way or a con artist. While now applied in a non-ethnic-specific sense, it originated as a reference to disreputable Jxxish businessmen and criminals.) Unusual given his pro-Nazi past. Bet he's practising riding off into the sunset, pursued by a real posse for his war crimes. Mao and Stalin escaped. Will Bush? I hear he never really learnt how to ride a horse. Some Texan!

POPSYou Bet Your Tintype, Buckaroo Mr. Kendrick belongs to a growing group of commercial and art photographers who have retreated in recent years from the ease and exactitude of the digital age and taken up the difficult, ethereal techniques of early photography, including the ambrotype (in which a unique image is created on a glass plate), daguerreotype (on polished silver) and tintype (usually on tin-plated iron ). The pictures — made by exposing and developing the metal plates after they have been coated with a light-sensitive solution of silver nitrate — are a kind of ideal meeting of subject and style. Mr. Kendrick, like most cowboys, is much happier when doing things the hard way.“Making these kinds of pictures, you don’t need the mental skills that you have to have a Ph.D. for,” he said. “It’s more like learning to be a carpenter. It’s work and it’s satisfying. What you get is unique, not mass-produced. You can’t repeat the process. So it’s the antithesis of digital.”

POPSDemocracy Saves America's Reputation The great thing about America is not that we are a perfect country, but that we are always a redeemable one. We have a certain mercurial charm (not to mention idiosyncratic way of doing things) that somehow manages to bring us back from the brink. The world will never truly hate us, because we can and do change. And somehow, America has a knack for putting its best foot forward at just the right crucial moment. Roger Cohen, also, is a shining example of editorial journalism in an age of glib semi-literate rants. He takes in the whole world, and manages to make sense of it, noticing all the right details.

POPS"Three Little Pigs" Book Deemed Offensive To Muslims You gotta be kidding me... The panel also suggested the book might be offensive to builders, what with it being entitled The Three Little Cowboy Builders. Becta asked: "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?" I apologize if any pigs, builders, muslims, cowboys or wildcards are offended by this clip.

POPSRural Gays Say Life Ain't Easy It really speaks to me about the amount of discrimination faced by these gays living in rural America who say they would give up their orientation in a nanosecond if they could, even admitting they would take a "magic pill" to end their gayness. Incredible what they would do to be accepted. Perhaps we should all take a magic pill to make us fit into what society really values. The line would be long, eh?
