No Drought Required For Federal Drought Aid
sahara
by sahara  10-5-2009
"In this county, we got a lot of questions from producers: 'Why are we eligible?' " recalled Tom Schneider, the head of the USDA office in Manitowoc County, where livestock owners got $1.5 million. "Our answer was 'Because we were told you were eligible.' " Several Wisconsin counties qualified on the basis of a two-year-old disaster declaration for a January 2001 snowstorm. "It was a nasty winter storm," recalled Teresa Zimmer, the USDA official in Green County. Asked how the storm affected ranchers, she said, "There were several days where livestock owners couldn't get to the market . . . to sell their animals." Ranchers in Green County collected nearly $1.5 million. One of those who got a payment was Cornell Kasbergen, who helps run family dairy farms in Green County and Tulare County, Calif. Family members received a total of $72,000 in livestock funds, records show. It was a program that was available that we took advantage of, did we have any losses? I couldn't tell you.

I belong to the Cornell University's Ornithological Labs Department for the preservation of Urban Birds (that's a mouthful). Anyway we hold several lab experiments annually, and the last one was called the "Funky Nests" contest. Over 10,000 entries were received from all over the globe, but this wasn't one of them, although, it should have been. You gotta love those crazy Russian Pigeons man!

more (at source): The monks could then refine any disparities by minimizing the apparent vertical depth of the images -- ultimately replicating the design element to submillimeter precision. Cisne proposed the idea in the July 17 issue of the journal Perception (Vol. 38, No. 7). The paper suggests that the technique, called free-fusion stereocomparison, which takes advantage of the brain's ability to perceive depth by integrating the slightly different views from each eye, was known nearly a thousand years before it was articulated by stereoscope inventor Sir George Wheatstone in the 19th century. Cisne analyzed the most detailed illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, created between 670 and 800 A.D., including the Book of Kells (circa 800 A.D.); some have as many as 30 lines per centimeter.

There is Now a Scientific Way to Measure Smelly Farts
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  9-1-2009    4
"The contraption could even have use outside of fraternity houses, Clain says, as a biosensor for harmful hydrogen-sulfide-producing bacteria in hospitals. Or dentists could use it to measure oral malodor. They’ve also received some interest from doctors with four-legged patients. “You can test the health of livestock through the quality of their farts,” Salas says. “Smell and sound can tell you a lot about their bowel movements.” When it came time to present the invention in class, though, Clain and Salas had to test their detector by making raspberry sounds and breathing on it—human exhalations contain enough hydrogen sulfide to trigger the sensor. “It’s hard to fart something really smelly on command,” Clain laments. “Besides, it provided a nicer atmosphere for those around us.” Still, their professor saw fit to award the project a well-deserved A."

"First Queen of Hip-Hop" gets her Ph.D. – on Warner Brothers' dime
Lexica
by Lexica  8-27-2009
Congratulations, Dr. Shante! More: She eventually cashed in, earning a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell to the tune of $217,000 - all covered by the label. But getting Warner Music to cough up the dough was a battle. "They kept stumbling over their words, and they didn't have an exact reason why they were telling me no," Shante said. She figured Warner considered the clause a throwaway, never believing a teen mom in public housing would attend college… Shante found an arm-twisting ally in Marguerita Grecco, the dean at Marymount Manhattan College. Shante showed her the contract, and the dean let her attend classes for free while pursuing the money. "I told Dean Grecco that either I'm going to go here or go to the streets, so I need your help," Shante recalls. "She said, 'We're going to make them pay for this.'" Grecco submitted and resubmitted the bills to the label, which finally agreed to honor the contract when Shante threatened to go public with the story.

(a)TAX IMPOSED."In the case of any individual who does not meet the requirements of subsection (d) at any time during the taxable year, there is hereby imposed a tax equal to 2.5 percent of the excess of" (1)the taxpayer’s modified adjusted gross income for the taxable year, over (2) the amount of gross income specified in section 6012(a)(1) with respect to the taxpayer. The Senate version is similar, although the tax is called a "shared responsibility payment" not a tax. Wow, a "tax" isn't as scary " but a "shared responsibility payment"? That's when you know you'll get hosed. House, kid, you were good, real good, but the Senate receives the 2009 George Orwell Award for Outstanding Achievement in Government Euphemizing. Of course, "shared responsibility" sounds good to many, but the reality is that it won't truly be shared. For one thing, this burden will only fall on those who work on the books and actually file a tax return.

Respect For The Flag
Jorjor
by Jorjor  7-5-2009    4
It's all spelled out in Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1 (see http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode04/usc_sup_01_4_10_1.html).. (By the way, that's former President Bush desecrating a flag in that photo). This morning, in the neighborhood park where there was a fireworks display last night, dozens of rumpled flags were everywhere - on the ground, in trash cans, along with flag-imprinted paper plates, napkins and other such stuff. Take a look at one photographer's view of how the flag is respected at http://www.sethbutler.com/tattered/. Fortunately for the armchair patriots and chickenhawk generals, there are no criminal penalties associated with Title 4 USC1. If congress were to enact some stiff fines for violations, the federal defecit would disappear overnight. The full statute, also known as the Flag Code, can be found at http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode04/usc_sup_01_4_10_1.html.

Contagious Plant Disease Hits US Veggies Hard

In the meantime, plant experts are warning gardeners to be on the lookout for the disease and to take quick action if it crops up. The first sign is often brown spots on plant stems, followed by nickel-sized olive-green or brown spots on the tops of leaves and fuzzy white fungal growth underneath. Tomato fruit will show firm, brown spots.

So You Think They Noticed?
vienova4
by vienova4  6-26-2009
Ever made a verbal gaffe in a presentation at work and thought to yourself, "I must have looked stupid"? Or had a date who burped loudly in a classy restaurant and you thought, "Great, I'll never be able to show my face here again"? In social psychology, the "spotlight effect" refers to our tendency to overestimate the amount of attention people pay to our actions--especially the embarrassing ones. Oftentimes it's all just in our mind. So don't fret over the mismatched socks.

Does Having Daughters Make You More Liberal?
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  6-1-2009
He theorized that having daughters made men “gradually shift their political stance and become more sympathetic to the ‘female’ desire for a… larger amount for the public good. They become more left-wing. Similarly, a mother with sons becomes sympathetic to the ‘male’ case for lower taxes and a smaller supply of public goods.”

Orange Juice Cornell for Record Victory
dgreplay
by dgreplay  5-25-2009
In what is surely the greatest NCAA championship playoff series no one watches, Syracuse defeated Cornell to win their record 11th division one lacrosse title. As is typically the case, this year's final was amazing. Cornell (which had not been to the title game in over 20 years) surprised the tournament favorite Virginia in the semis, crushing them to advance into the championship game. Cornell then proceeded to dominate the Orange for about 57 of the 60 minutes before the fireworks started. Not much fun to be sure for Cornell, but one helluva game to watch for lacrosse fans. That is, of course, unless you're a Cornell alum. Congrats to the Orange and coach John Desko for his 5th NCAA title
