POPSNIES Kids' Pages - Sing-Along Songs Midis & Lyrics Cool government web site that has all sorts of stuff for kids, one of those things being an index of lyrics and tunes to Sing-Alongs. I have been having a blast finding songs we used to sing at the summer picnics my neighborhood (Capital Hill, Seattle, Wa) used to have in the 70's. They were hosted by the Bullit sp? family, former owners of KING 5 TV. I just happened to be lucky enough to be best friends with someone who lived accross the street from them. We always sang songs when it started getting dark. I have a lot of good memories about those picnics. They were nice people too. One year they paid for me to go to summer camp because my family couldn't afford it. We didn't ask, I think they heard if from one of my friends.

POPSU2 To Stay Put with Universal The Internet rumors were flying recently that U2 would soon be leaving Universal Music Group ( VIV ) to head to greener pastures at Live Nation ( LYV ). Turns out that was not quite true.

POPSComcast Blocking Comcast Blocking of any Internet traffic is tatamount to infringement of the freedom of international communications of any sort. Filesharing, of any sort, whether legal or not. Who decides what is legal filesharing or not? It is up to the individual to decide whether there is a need for something on the Internet, not any one individual, corporation, or country's authority. There should be a free access to the Internet for anyone for any reason before the application of social values (ie. porn, copyrights, stocks, etc.)

POPSJury considered $3.6 Million download award They had awarded $9,250 a song for 24 songs. They could legally award up to $150,000 per song. They decided on the figure by getting the jury to put numbers in a hat-literally. The lowest possible award according to the law for a guilty verdict, was $18,000 for 24 songs. Seems like the record companies are trying to lay the blame on the jury, the charged, but that is the law. It's clear the kind of artists the record companies are. They just worked out how to make piracy legal. The conversion a work from one format to another without explicit permission of the actual creator, for the sake of profit, is tantamount to plagiarism.

POPSWoman to pay downloading award herself A cash settlement before court, as the easy exit seems to be the verdict. Imagine taking all of the people charged to court. They'd rather just send a bill, and chase the R.T.S. Address unknown

POPSMusic sharing trial continues in Minnesota
First of 26,000 similar cases. A few things made me think. I wondered how, with all of the identity, and security assurances given online, the record companies had no trouble finding her email address to send her notification. Perhaps it was through authorized sifting of kazaa records, but how does that stand against any other links the email account may have.(Probably deemed irrelevant.) The way they are attempting to prove the case seems fairly circumstantial. They may have evidence that is inadmissible, or is being held for a coup de gras, They say songs landed on her hard drive, faster than she could have ripped them with the Windows Media Player she was using at the time. ( I thought everything was faster than a Windows Media player) The thing I thought was most interesting was that many cases ended in a cash settlement. What would the record companies consider to be a reasonable settlement? (They probably haggle till the lawyers think they've earned enough.)

POPSVW Wants Identity of Nazi-Themed YouTube Video Creator My granddaughter had several AMV's pulled by YouTube due to reported copyright violations, even though she posted a disclaimer that she claimed NO OWNERSHIP to the music or the videos used. I guess YouTube is getting more cautious about possible legal complications like this one.

POPSFunny Zune vs Ipod spoof from Microsoft I can't really agree with the video, since sharing music Zune to Zune is a temporary thing, even if you own all the copyrights, but it's an interesting "we can be snarky too" dig from Microsoft .

POPSUniversal Music sues MySpace over music copyrights This is a healthy article about the latest lawsuit of Myspace for copyright violations. The recent new format of videos uploads which have been converted for what was supposed to protect the Media from being tampered with, has constituted reformatting of copyrighted material and is now key ingredient that causes myspace to be named as the violator of copyrighted materials. Universal also sued Sony Pictures Entertainment's site grouper.com and bolt.com which is an independent site. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061117/tc_nm/media_universal_myspace_dc

POPSMyspace, with Help From Record Companies, To Suck Even More Record companies, angered at receiving free publicity from online personalities named after Dragonball Z characters or ICP members, have decided that people who wouldn't buy their music anyway are somehow losing them money. I guess it makes sense - after hearing most artists once, I have no desire whatsoever to hear them ever again. In related news, anyone playing their car stereo loud enough to be heard outside the vehicle must pay licensing fees to BMG, et. al.
