Should Kids Recite Flag Code Along With The Pledge Of Allegiance
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-30-2009    4
The first Flag Code came during a time of similar national upheaval. In 1942, Congress passed the first resolution to endorse flag etiquette, including the proper way to fold, display and dispose of the flag. Massachusetts entered the debate in 1970, when Leominister teenager Valerie Goguen was sentenced to six months in jail for using an American flag patch on a pair of jeans. The Supreme Court overturned his conviction in the 1974 case Smith v. Goguen. Goguen still lives in Leominster, and is still adamant that the case is about love for the flag.

Tessa Jowell's rich, corrupt husband
notareargunner
by notareargunner  10-28-2009
What is better for the nation, this corrupt man with his complicity spouse, or a wanker who charges the nation for his porn whilst his wife walks around with a police escort and anti-stab jacket? That's Labour all over. Labour in Ashton in Makersfield willl be losing one of the most inept, lazy self promotional MP's in Lancashire and then have no say on his replacement. That's Labour. Blackpool MP Gordon Marden has not a word of encouragement for the family of Andy Miller who died in rge hands of a bailiff as he was demanding payment for a challenged fine for speeding. The evidence of They Work for You shows where Gay Gordon's priorities lie, and it appears not to be in the interest of the ordinary English voter.

Hussein was arrested by Sudan's public order police at a Khartoum party in July with 12 other women, 10 of whom pleaded guilty to similar charges and were flogged, she has said. Hussein was jailed in September after refusing to pay a fine for the same offence but released after a day in prison after the country's journalists' union came up with the payment.

Gary Taubes: The great diet delusion
Lexica
by Lexica  10-23-2009
More: The institutionalised conviction that we get fat simply because we overeat is based on the kind of fallacious reasoning that would lead to a failing grade in a high-school logic class. The first law of thermodynamics tells us that energy is neither created nor destroyed, so the calories we consume must be either stored, expended or excreted. If we are getting fatter, we must be taking in more energy than we are giving out: we are overeating. But this does not tell us which direction the arrow of causality is pointing. Do we get fat because we overeat, or is some regulatory or hormonal phenomenon driving us to fatten and in turn causing us to overeat? Saying that obesity is explained by overeating and/or sedentary behaviour is like saying that chronic fatigue syndrome is explained by a lack of energy. It sounds obvious; it tells us nothing.

Spiritual Self-Confidence

It’s especially important to have this kind of confidence in times like these when there is so much turbulence and individual and collective insecurity about survival. Without this kind of confidence as a constant reference point, we may find ourselves at times without the emotional, psychological, or spiritual resources to fight the good fight

Mitterrand refuses to resign over book
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-9-2009
The current furor was fanned by Mitterrand's vocal support for filmmaker Roman Polanski, wanted in Los Angeles by authorities who want him to serve a sentence for his 1977 conviction for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Mitterand told TF1 he was "too emotional" when he denounced Polanski's arrest in Switzerland as "horrifying." Mitterand said that he may move to a more congenial environment, such as Ireland, in the near future.

Will Dog Fighting Videos be Protected by Freedom of Speech?
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-7-2009    2
If the Supreme Court rules to uphold the conviction of Stevens, the law will be reinstated and animals will once again be protected from people who make money from their suffering. It seems like it should be an easy decision for the Supreme Court, but since the concept of free speech has come into question everyone from book publishers to movie producers, photographers, artists and journalists have gotten involved. They have taken animal cruelty out of the equation and replaced it with their own interests that they believe will be damaged if Stevens loses. Even the ACLU has gotten involved. The New York Times went as far as filing a “brief” in support of Stevens. They said, “The 1999 law imperils the media’s ability to report on issues related to animals.” Media publications cite that they are concerned that hunting and fishing magazines will be censored and general reporting on animal issues will be limited.

Fugitives from justice don't get to dictate the terms of their case
Lexica
by Lexica  9-30-2009
More: Documentarians should have a wide leeway to argue their case the way they want, but there's a point at which ethical lines are crossed. Zenovich…seems to have been blinded by her contact with Polanski. Here's an example: The word "sodomy" is briefly referenced in Zenovich's documentary, but it's a somewhat ambiguous term, and it's never explained. Zenovich has fun flashing bits of the victim's grand jury testimony on the screen, but she never gets around to using this exchange from that testimony, which was made public in 2003 and published by the Smoking Gun: "Then he lifted up my legs and went in through my anus." "What do you mean by that? "He put his penis in my butt." …she also said that she had repeatedly told Polanski no, but that she was too afraid of him to resist. It's a drag to include a scene of anal rape of a 13-year-old in your moody documentary about such a Byronic figure, but it's also fairly relevant.

Cyberbullying, A Legislative Act Toward Internet Inquisition?
blueridge
by blueridge  9-29-2009
CATO explains what liberties are at stake in this legislation, which is much like the so-called "hate crime" bills. (All these are being manufactured and pushed by the ADL, the hypocritical defamers.) The Act goes far beyond the issue of unauthorized access, criminalizing any rude speech delivered via the internet, cell phone, or text message : ‘(a) Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both .
