The Hate Monger of Minnesota (Rep. Bachmans history of gaffes)
reimers
by reimers  11-1-2008    1
Yet the highly controversial statements continued. During a St. Cloud Times podcast in early 2007, Bachmann claimed exclusive knowledge of a secret Iranian plan to partition half of Iraq. After meeting Gov. Sarah Palin last summer in Alaska, Bachmann declared that “warmth” from a pipeline running through Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would make the area a “meeting ground and ‘coffee klatch’ for the caribou.” Just months later, during a House hearing on the mortgage foreclosure crisis engulfing her district, Bachmann read aloud from an editorial blaming “blacks and other minorities” for causing the epidemic.

The New Iran: Dangerous, but more rational

Petraeus Talk Bolsters Obama
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-9-2008    10
Cont.... Petraeus also came out unambiguously in his talk at Heritage for opening communications with America’s adversaries, a position McCain is attacking Obama for endorsing. Citing his Iraq experience, Petraeus said, “You have to talk to enemies.” He added that it was necessary to have a particular goal for discussion and to perform advance work to understand the motivations of his interlocutors. Yet Petraeus emphasized throughout his lecture that reaching out to insurgent groups — some “with our blood on their hands,” he said — was necessary to the ultimate goal of turning them against irreconcilable enemies like Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Obama's Misleading, Confusing Abortion Rights Ads
merrie
by merrie  9-3-2008    1
Obama’s new radio ad tells voters McCain “will make abortion illegal” is airing widely in at least seven swing states. Kate Michelman, an informal Obama adviser who is the former president of the abortion-rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, said she expected the campaign to expand its appeal to women on issues of abortion rights. “This is a door opened to a longer campaign and strategic effort to ensure that women know the truth about John McCain and Gov. Palin,” she said, suggesting it would come “on the radio, in the mail, on the phones, and in the organizing on the ground.” Though the campaign says the ad was released before Palin was chosen, Michelman said her selection, and her strong anti-abortion stance, would drive the issue closer to the center of the race. “By his nomination of Gov. Palin, McCain has made his opposition to a woman’s right to decide a major campaign issue,” she said.

Lefty Blogosphere Petitions Dems to Drop Lieberman
Wisco
by Wisco  7-2-2008    2
The piece goes on: Next week, Democratic activists and liberal bloggers plan to deliver the petition to members of the Senate Democratic Steering Committee, which will make recommendations on committee assignments next Congress to Nevada Democrat Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader. They also plan to keep the grassroots pressure on the Democrats until those decisions are made after the November elections. Leaders of this effort hope to mirror the success bloggers had in fueling the candidacy of businessman Ned Lamont, who beat Lieberman on an anti-war platform in the Connecticut 2006 Senate Democratic primary. Running as an Independent, Lieberman later defeated Lamont in the midterm elections. Now that Liberman's stumping for McCain and a continued majority in the Senate is a leadpipe cinch, dems really should kick Joe out on his ass. Screw him. They need this guy like a boat needs a drain.

Barack is a survivalist
sillysam
by sillysam  7-2-2008
A few months ago, when the Rev. Jeremiah Wright first came to national attention, Obama was nearly demure when he said: “I can no more disown (Wright) than I can disown my white grandmother.” He may not have disowned his white grandmother, but Obama didn’t exactly paint a sympathetic — or loving — portrait of her either. He essentially threw her under the bus, saying that she had made racist remarks while he was growing up, a statement that served only to highlight Obama’s own remarkable transcendence. After several weeks of balancing his professed love for Wright with the controversial statements of his chosen father figure and spiritual mentor, Obama eventually left his church of 20 years. But why then, after all those years, did Obama finally find the door? What changed was the degree of his self-interest. As long as Wright was helping Obama burnish his bona fides within the African-American community, it didn’t matter that the minister’s rhetorical flights of fancy border

The New “Hip-Hop Pastor”, Same Old Message
merrie

But a videotape of a sermon he delivered at Wright’s church shows this “wonderful young pastor” referring to “ghetto prophets” and “thug theology,” calling the late rapper Tupac Shakur a “prophet,” and reciting at length lyrics to Shakur’s song “Thugz Mansion.” In an interview last month with National Public Radio, Moss refused to distance himself from claims by Wright that the U.S. government was involved in distributing illegal drugs to minorities. In his Easter sermon, Moss said Wright was “lynched” by the international media, and compared Wright to Jesus.

The Sea Shepherd Tar Baby Strategy
papananook
by papananook  4-25-2008
The next part of the plan was for Captain Watson to not be on the ship so as to remove himself as the excuse for a boarding party because of his Canadian citizenship. The crew were to maintain radio silence and Captain Watson would make controversial statements from shore to goad and manipulate Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn to act rashly and to respond emotionally – which he did. Hearn took the bait and got himself stuck into the Sea Shepherd strategy by doing the one thing we most wanted him to do – we provoked him into sending an armed boarding party illegally onto a foreign ship in international waters. It was brilliant and he fell for it. At the same time he utilized Bre’r Fox’s tar baby strategy, Captain Watson also incorporated Bre’r rabbit’s strategy into a plan that took into account the psychology of Canadian Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn and the bizarre regulations of the Canadian government in defending the slaughter of seals. In Canada under the “Seal Pro

Did McCain agree with Obama before he disagreed?
ratilfar
by ratilfar  4-11-2008    5
From the article: "Sure, it's not exactly the same, but it's pretty darn similar. In fact, McCain seems to be saying something far more controversial. While Obama is saying economic hardship breeds anti-immigrant feelings, McCain is saying lots of rural people just hate Hispanics. That may or may not be true - but the fact that McCain's campaign is feigning outrage over Obama's truisms when their own candidate has made thematically similar statements strikes me as...what's the word...oh yeah - dishonest."

Going more on general "feeling" and a lack of research on my own part, I "sense"(?), hope(?) that Obama does turn out to be more of a real-world, moderate with common-sense, goodwill, and strength when necessary, than some have declared him to be. Not a good basis for my decision is it? I know. Still, after McCain's disgusting display of dishonesty in the debates (smearing Romney) on one hand,...and the distasteful (putting it mildly) notion of the Clintons on the other, there is a lot to like about Barack Obama. Here is his chance to show what his stuff is. Most troublesome, however, are some of the aides and advisors, not to mention the radical leftists of the population who could over-react with a disproportionate sense of inflated power and grandeur, were he to be elected. At this, for me still, somewhat ignore-ant point in my insight into the man, I have found myself hoping Barak Obama survives the process, and comes through CLEANLY. One huge measure is how he responds to

An American MS sufferer is facing two years in jail for suggesting solving the US problems by killing Bush, a noble cause.

Facebook Admits Ad Service Tracks Logged-Off Users Facebook has confirmed findings of a CA security researcher that the social-networking site's Beacon ad service is more intrusive and stealthy than previously acknowledged, an admission that contradicts statements made previously by Facebook executives and representatives. Beacon is a major part of the Facebook Ads platform that Facebook introduced with much fanfare several weeks ago. Beacon tracks certain activities of Facebook users on more than 40 participating Web sites, including those of Blockbuster and Fandango, Facebook's controversial Beacon ad system tracks users' off-Facebook activities even if those users are logged off from the social-networking site and have previously declined having their activities on specific external sites broadcast to their Facebook friends unclear whether Facebook plans to modify Beacon so it doesn't track and report

Immunity for Blackwater and Torture for Muslims
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  10-30-2007
In case anyone out there is still wondering "Why do they hate us?" allow me to illustrate: American Blackwater guards, employed by the State Department, who are above the Iraqi law and beyond Military law, go on a shooting spree in traffic, leaving a dozen innocent civilians dead. The half-hearted US investigation is undermined by a reflexive offer of immunity. On the other hand, Arab Muslims, or anyone else more swarthy than Nathan Lane, can be abducted off the streets and tortured in secret detention camps or military prisons, with no legal recourse. Our government pardons its hiered killers and arbitrarily tortures people based on their race and religion. That's pretty damn shocking. So why is it so controversial to say "These people should go to jail." They haven't just broken the law, they've made a mockery of American principles. And yet, we feel no shame.

CSM "America, stop waving the nuclear threat at potential adversaries"
righthand
by righthand  8-12-2007    9
The US should use its nuclear arsenal for deterrence only and preserve the 'taboo' on nuclear weapons use. They both essentially said they would engage international reprobates – something this administration has repeatedly baulked at doing. Remember, Vice President Dick Cheney said, "We don't negotiate with evil. We destroy it." A tougher question is whether the next president would threaten to use nuclear weapons against a foreign enemy. Obama recently told the Associated Press that he would not use nuclear weapons "in any circumstance" involving civilians. Clinton once again criticized his foreign policy position saying that she didn't believe that "any president should make any blanket statements."

How Republican Senators broke their promise to investigate Iraq intelligence
jklugman
by jklugman  5-26-2007
First Roberts said publicly that he'd "try" to have Phase II available to the public before the 2004 election. He didn't. Roberts then gave his word, in writing, that members of the Senate Intelligence Committee would have a draft report on controversial "public statements" from administration officials. That didn't happen either. Then Roberts indicated that he might just give up on the second part of the investigation altogether, because, he argued, there was nothing left to learn. Under pressure to release Phase II before the 2006 elections, Roberts agreed to release subparts of the report, which documented...nothing about the White House's mistakes. One reason why we should be skeptical of Republican reports from the Senate Intelligence Committee. In this instance, they were shamefully negligent in overseeing the executive branch.

Hillary Needed To Be Reminded Of Her Feelings?
zasel
by zasel  3-16-2007    2
I don't wanna keep belabouring this piont, but each time I am reminded of how Hillary had to be embarrassed into taking a position on an issue she continues to claim as her own, I find myself becoming angry. She seems to be so incapable of speaking off the cup, about anything that might be considered even remotely controversial, that she first has to go back, check with her campaign team, and then say what she is cleared to state. Very sad indeed for someone who wants to lead the country and the entire free world. I had such great hopes for Hillary, but the more I observe her as a candidate the more I am looking elsewhere. Richardson or Obama perhaps?

Ex-FDA Head Faces Criminal Inquiry

Lester Crawford, the head of the FDA for 3 MONTHS (he quit all of a sudden) is being criminally investigated for financial improprieties involving the FDA (he had shares in companies regulated by the FDA while he was commissioner there) and making false statements to Congress. I wonder (pure speculation alert) if this has anything to do with his controversial decision to torpedo Plan B. Via Justin Rood at TPM Muckraker .
