Redefining Marriage a form of 'Soft Despotism' according to author
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  8-2-2008    12
"In claiming for homosexuals the right to marry," she reasons, the "state also claims for itself the ability to declare what constitutes marriage . . . It transforms marriage from a pre-political obligation into its own creation." But as an artificial creation of the state, same-sex "marriage" is "an institution that needs to be coddled . . . Its very fragility demands a culture in which it is protected." This means, as Sugrue argues, that "once marriage becomes a statist institution for the sake of consenting adults, the state will increasingly be called upon to create the social conditions to protect these unions." The need for coddling means the state will use public education for this end, and align itself against churches that refuse to recognize same-sex "marriage." State-ordered gay "marriage" is an attack, not only on legitimate marriage, but upon religious freedom and the freedom not to have one's children indoctrinated into alien ideas about marriage.

The Right of the People ... shall not be infringed
merrie
by merrie  6-14-2008
PETITION We affirm that said Amendment was established to define an individual "right of the People to keep and bear arms," and that there is no more important constitutional issue than that of defending the plain language and original intent of the Second Amendment. The newly-emboldened Democrat Party, with Barack Hussein Obama leading the charge, is once again attempting to redefine the Second Amendment as a collective right only, as outlined on the ACLU's website under "Gun Control": "We believe that the constitutional right to bear arms is primarily a collective one, intended mainly to protect the right of the states to maintain militias. ... The ACLU therefore believes that the Second Amendment does not confer an unlimited right upon individuals to own guns." http://patriotpetitions.us/second/

U.S. House Blocks War Funding--Congress Stands Up
blueridge
by blueridge  5-15-2008
Good! Unjust and anti-constitutional undeclared wars have no obligation to be funded. Bring the troops home with the budget in place. Congress is a separate and equal branch of government with the Executive, not its foot stool.

Choosing to Let Bush Continue Violating Laws
papananook
by papananook  2-2-2008    2
Correcting power-abuse really has no meaning because power is what it's all about. They all abuse it. So what? It's just politics. We both agreed that according to what he was telling me, it boils down to the following: A sitting President is not subject to the law as long as he remains in office. He can CONTINUE to break laws as long as he remains in office. He can only be removed DURING his term of office (and therefore become subject to the law) through impeachment. Only Congress can impeach, and it's solely up to their DISCRETION. So, as long as Congress successfully blocks the impeachment process, they are willfully allowing the President to remain completely outside the law, condoning that principle, and, in effect, shielding him from being removed from office so that he will be subject to the law and can be prosecuted. Congress has no OBLIGATION to intervene. The aide seemed not the least bit disturbed by the gravity or import of my conclusions. It is, after all, just
