POPSBlack Friday warning: video games waste energy and contribute to global warming Ecos and the NRDC offer some solutions, calling for video game console makers to develop more energy-efficient devices that use many of the same power-saving features found on PCs (such as the automatic powering down of a system if it is left idle for a certain period of time). After a period of one to three hours of inactivity, for example, the video game console could automatically save the status of the game to memory and initiate auto power-down. Or, the consoles could come with a "sleep" button that could be used to save power when the players are away from their games. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have power-saving features, but they are turned off by default when the consoles are shipped and most people don't even know they exist.

POPSGame Console Energy Use The press release goes on to say: "On average, the report found that Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 use large amounts of electricity – 150 Watts and 119 Watts respectively – including much more power than their prior generation of game consoles. These two systems can each consume more than 1,000 kilowatt-hours per year if left on all the time, which is equal to the annual energy use of two new refrigerators. The Nintendo Wii, however, uses significantly less power when on – at less than 20 Watts – and actually uses slightly less power than the previous generation of their console."

POPSWill Digital Distribution Kill Game Stores? There are plenty of gamers in the world who would delight at the failure of stores like GameStop -- they're frequently criticized and disliked. But it's important to keep in mind that digital distribution also indicates that the game may well come loaded down with DRM -- and that it's harder, if not impossible, to resell it or install it on another computer.

POPSNY Passes Video Game Label Law Similar laws have been thrown out in states including California and Illinois -- and it's a good thing, because they're absolutely stupid. Why should video game makers be forced by law to label their wares this way, and not creators of other forms of media?

POPSCongress Blinds The FBI These predictive models get better as the quality of the information going into them improves. As more terrorists are captured and interrogated, and their computers and data is translated, the predictions become more accurate. No one harasses researchers for using data mining, or makes fun of building supercomputers with graphics processors (often the same ones found in video game consoles, making super-fast computers cheap enough to be used in a combat zone to make life saving predictions), when it saves troops from getting killed. The FBI has been unable to make this point to Congress, mainly because some key legislators are ideologically opposed to data mining, and refuse to acknowledge the widespread success of the technique in civilians and military sectors.
