POPSNationwide Protests at Canadian Consulates, Wed. July 9 Having been a Refusenik myself (and I never forget it), these men and women of conscience hold a special place in my heart...I know how difficult, yet liberating it can be to stand up to the Federal Gummint. Following Parliament vote welcoming war resisters, please sign new letter to stop deportations! We'll mail the letters for you...See site link.

POPSWhy some conservatives are backing Obama How you vote should be governed by your interpretation of what the candidates have to offer. You may be able to think of the good of the country or you may be pressed by the need for food, shelter and clothing (not to mention medical insurance).

POPSConservatives At Odds With McCain But perhaps more importantly, he has long been an advocate of entitlement reform. He was early an ardent support of personal accounts for Social Security, and has pushed for serious Medicare reform, including means-testing. Almost alone among Republicans, he opposed the disastrous Medicare prescription drug benefit. "On domestic policy, he has shown a disturbing predilection for elevating every personal pet peeve, from steroids in baseball to airplane service quality, to a federal issue. And, he has embraced heavily regulatory environmental policies and compulsory national service. Like George W. Bush, he tends to support federal power over federalism, executive authority over legislative, and generally leans toward the imperial presidency. For believers in individual liberty and limited government, it's a decidedly mixed bag. But, then again, aren't they all?"

POPSDeadliest Attack in Afghanistan The Afghan Interior Ministry hinted that the attack was carried out with help from Pakistan's intelligence service, saying that "terrorists have carried out this attack in coordination and consultation with some of the active intelligence circles in the region." The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, said Pakistan condemned the attack and terrorism in all forms. Unfortunately we have no more troops to send to Afghanistan.

POPSCreationist Shows His Stuff Here's a pretty typical tirade by a fundamentalist Creationist that pretty much touches on all the points that Creationists get wrong all the time. About the only point he makes is that he's pretty ignorant about science and adheres to the talking points of the conservative right. My question is how many of these proselytizers will have to be proven wrong before they're eventually shamed into admitting that they've been lied to. The sad part is that many certainly have children who are also subjected to these ignorant views thus the ignorance is allowed to be passed along generational lines.

POPSThe true heart of the conservative movement Of course as tends to be the case with Helms' most repugnantly racist bile, he said that a good ways back in the past. But even at that time, most Americans managed not to be repugnant racists. But not Helms. And unlike a lot of people who did take the white supremacist line in the 1950s and 60s, Helms never apologized and, indeed, never backed down doing things like mounting a filibuster against making Martin Luther King Day into a federal holiday. Remarkably, mainstream American conservatives are eager to tell us that this man is their hero. Even more remarkably, you sometimes hear conservatives talk about reaching out to black voters.

POPSWA diamonds give clue to ancient life How can these people all be so deluded? We all know that life began a couple of thousand years ago in a book. Go to the museum if you don't believe. (The one built by the neo conservative with an idea and no brains.)

POPSBill Clinton says Barack Obama must 'kiss my ass' for his support "It has long been known that Mr Clinton is angry at the way his own reputation was tarnished during the primary battle when several of his comments were interpreted as racist." White liberals are used to spewing out often bogus "racism" smears at their conservative opponents. It's ironic to see them tarred with their own brush.

POPSEnzymes made to order Making enzymes is a tricky business. Even the names of the techniques sound mind-boggling, with the process involving a mix of 'quantum mechanical computation', 'advanced protein engineering' and 'directed evolution'. while naturally occurring enzymes speed reaction rates by many billion (or even trillion) fold, the synthetic enzymes gave more conservative boosts – around 100,000 fold. "The acceleration is really rather modest by comparison to Nature," admits Houk – but it's still incredibly exciting

POPSJesse Helms is Dead at At Age 86 He is low on my list of likable ex-Senators. A cultural conservative to the max. But I do give him credit for putting the kabash on the proposed Reagan-Ford co-presidency proposal. I once met a female former ex-lobbyist who told me "Back in the day Jesse Helms was the biggest ass pincher in Washington." She alleged to be one of his pinchees. I wish I had something good to say about the man, but I don't. I'm sorry for his passing. I suppose the fact that he died on July 4 will play as a "sign" from the Almighty among the cultural conservatives.

POPSDeficiencies in right-wing patriotism The last example is especially strange -- despairing about the political culture of the South in the 1920's, where disenfranchisement, lynching, and even slavery were routine practices, is a sign of insufficent patriotism? If that doesn't show the deficiencies of the right's style of patriotism, nothing does. Via Matt Yglesias

POPSLike I said, we won't need SCOTUS no mo'!
If one more "R" gets on SCOTUS we can all say TOOTLES to civil liberties & HELLO to Fascism. A statement from an everyday Alarmist? No its serious! The court now in lockstep with the "R" ideology which protects the wealthy and gives a nose-thumb at those who need help. The kind of social order they wish to spread across our land, is not democracy. Not with, cruel punishment for those who can't pay their way out of a guilt accusation. Not with, melt down of habeas corpus. Not with, stripping a woman of her right to choose what's best for her body & circumstances. Not with, laws, claiming Voter Id's before one can vote. Not with, reducing punitive damages to large corp. who will become more reckless not having to face large losses to their beloved capital. Not with, dismantling gun-control laws putting all at risk of being murdered by the disgruntled, the disturbed who should never possess lethal weapons. Remember 1 or 2 more "R" justices and you can kiss your, you-know-what bye-bye:-(

POPSObama courts conservatives with new faith program “While I could sit in church and pray all I want, I wouldn’t be fulfilling God’s will unless I went out and did the Lord’s work,” he declared. Oh, GREAT! Another Fairy tale believer in the WH! Sweet Jeebus and Ramona. What a revolting development this is.

POPSIn the Heart of Darkest Africa... I hold no animosity to the proposed Conservative candidate and his brother, we all wish them well. The sentiments of notyeyavet I endorse. What is concerning is that if Mr R. Bell is such a concerned citizen, why is it that he demanded that one of his members of the Blackpool branch of the Royal Marine Association had to endure the time and cost of a 700 mile round journey, just to have access to the minutes of the Association meetings? If Mr Bell could not cope with the needs of 50 members, how will he cope, if he is elected, with the harrowing demands of 75,000 constituents? In the words of the Commando march ...In the heart of darkest Africa, Where no Yank has ever been, Lies... Well nothing changes!!!

POPSObama - Faith Based Initiative I've never been comphortable with Bush running this program and I'm not happy to see Obama embrace it. Even if he runs it better than Bush it leaves the door wide open for the next conservative government to expand and distort the program.

POPSWhy The Brits Are Setting Terrorists Free It is surely no accident that this failure to grasp the true dimensions of the Islamic terrorist threat is so pronounced among the British elite. For these are the people whose education and careers embody the key attribute of Britain's liberal society – the belief that the world is governed by rational agents acting in their rational self-interest. The British ruling class just doesn't get religious fanaticism. That is why its judges and politicians are finding it so difficult to fight Islamic terror. Not just Britain but the whole world is less safe as a result.

POPSObama Snubs DLC He skipped out last year, too. While the article describes the DLC as "centrist," the truth is that they're committed to dragging the party right. A former Chair of the DLC is Joe Liberman , which ought to give you a clue as to how "centrist" they are. Good on him for blowing them off. It's home to the conservative and the overly-cautious. Bill Clinton's "triangulation" is a good example of DLC philosophy -- pre-emptive capitulation. Think the current Congress blows? Thank the DLC.
