Social Media landscape
syedakram
by syedakram  7-12-2008
Online communities didn’t wait for Facebook to gather and sociabilize within online forums. Bear in mind that a tool in itself is not able to create a community, only members can. Or to be more precise: the capacity of members to find new subjects and interaction modes.

Alexander The Great
merrie
by merrie  7-11-2008    2
he began to organize the territory into a realm such as he envisioned. His early death brought an end to his plans. Alexander was born in Pella, capital of Macedonia. His father was Philip II of Macedon, who had conquered Greece; his mother was Olympias, a princess from Epirus. Aristotle was Alexander's tutor, and the literature of Greece was his inspiration. The handsome youth took Achilles of Homer's Iliad, a reputed ancestor, as his hero. Alexander's teachers in military science were his father's generals. When he was only 16, he commanded forces in military actions against hill tribes.

The End of Aging - Still a Controvertial Vision
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-7-2008
Leon Kass and his friends are contemporary incarnations of an Orwellian nightmare. Besides "War is Peace", I hear also "Death is Life". Of course there are no known social good coming from the conquest of death, we never lived in a social system that conquered death. How could we possibly know? But Kass and his friends, seem to have some privileged knowledge we do not possess, and they already decided for us as individuals and as a society. Well, in time, I believe, they will have the choice to walk their talk. All I want is a chance to walk mine.

How George Washington's Savvy Won The Day
merrie
by merrie  7-3-2008    1
Fighting force. Washington's vision was vindicated in the winter of 1776-77, as his Army, often working with militias, scored quick-hitting successes at Trenton, Princeton, and other parts of New Jersey. Washington even made the best of a painful setback after the British conquest of the nation's capital, Philadelphia. Settling in for a hard winter at Valley Forge, Pa., Washington built a distinctively American fighting force even while exercising political skills that allowed him to overcome insubordinate rivals in the Army and to mollify critics in the Continental Congress. Just as important, he had won the lasting support of America's civilian authorities, to whom he returned all power at war's end. Hearing of that gesture, Britain's King George III said that Washington would be the greatest man in history if it was true.

They're Baaack--Juan Coles take on Amerikan Big Oil in Iraq
papananook
by papananook  6-20-2008    2
Thanks to Ratilfar...Maybe he clipped it too but it deserves all the spreading it gets...excellent column by Juan Cole: Bush and Cheney clearly went into Iraq primarily in order to put US petroleum firms in precisely this favored position. The US power elite wanted this outcome and connived actively at it. As Alan Greenspan put it, “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil.” Poor Iraq has been looted, occupied, and disrupted by the industrialized West for a century because of the curse of its oil wealth. The Iraqi Petroleum Company was until 1929 the Turkish Petroleum Company since it began in 1912 with a concession from the Ottoman Empire, which ruled Iraq before the 1917 British conquest. The victors of World War I used their victory to leverage themselves into Iraqi oil. The Ottomans had thrown in with Germany and Austria in 1914, and were defeated by the victorious allies. Iraq was considered a s

"To Hell or to Connaught" Ethnic Cleansing 17th Century style
righthand
by righthand  5-9-2008    9
The Irish recognise modern day ethnic cleansing because we have a long tradition of real ethnic cleansing like as practices by the Zionist on the modern Irish, the Palestinians. Ours is no false myth either. Like our Famine, detailed records are there for all to see. We were dragged into the English Civil War. Being neutral was as guilty as being on the King's side. We were required to give up our faith to have ant chance of retaining residence. This is not to rehash history or beat up on the bad Brits as most good Brits have Irish blood somewhere. It's to indicated that the 'victim' race have by no means a right to their beloved victimhood. We Irish have risen from the equal of black slaves to our present elevated position when we gave up the begging bowl and stood tall. 60 years of independence has made the Zionists the least loved nation on earth. Only what Bush did with the World's goodwill for the USA post 9/11 is on a par with what Israel has achieved with its reputation i

Does it Undo the Christian and Muslims, too?
righthand
by righthand  5-2-2008    5
If it proves that the Exodus is a MYTH then so is the bible. Then so is Christianity and the Muslim faith. And they all know it. Now its not about faith. It's about hoax!!! They should be in court as crooks but the courts too have their vested interest. Think of it as proving to children that there is a Father Christmas. Ok, no one is defrauded or cheated like these religions founded on myth not faith. And all this knowledge arose from attempting to prove that the European Jews had some right to the land of Israel. No matter how creative they have been, all their archaeology efforts have proven is the opposite to their theory. The Zionist have succeeded in one thing. Bringing archaeology into disrepute! And religion!

Floating Utopia and Ocean City Projects
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-14-2008    3
So where did this all start? As with many present utopian ideals and building strategies a surprising number of philosophical ideas, building strategies and ecological approaches embodied in the aforementioned floating utopian concepts date back to the famous environmentalist, scientist, designer, philosopher and visionary Buckminster Fuller. In the 1960s he developed a design for something known as Triton City which was to be a floating place of residence for up to 5,000 inhabitants and designed to be resistant to tsunamis and other natural forces that floating cities might encounter on the water. Somewhat amazingly, these designs were approved by the Navy as well as the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the United States. In fact, Baltimore even planned at one point to construct one of these and install it in Chesapeake Bay until governments changed and plans fell through.

Destroying Sculptures Of Muhammad February 29, 2008
merrie
by merrie  2-29-2008
Top: The courthouse of the Appellate Division, First Department of the New York State Supreme Court, at Madison Avenue and 25th Street, New York City, photographed before 1955 from the southwest. Note the presence of a statue at the far right (east) of the building Middle: The same courthouse, post-1955. Note the missing statue at the far right. Muhammad statue had been at the westerly end of the 25th Street side but the other statues on that side were moved one spot to the west in 1955, so that the empty plinth is now at the easterly end. Bottom: The New York Muhammad statue, described by the New York Times showing the prophet "of average height, but broad shouldered, with thick, powerful hands. Under his turban, his brows are prominent and frowning. A long, heavy beard flows over his robe. In his left hand, he holds a book, symbolizing the new religion he founded, and in his right, a scimitar, connoting the Moslem conquest."
