POPSRed Cross: How to help – not hinder – Haiti
More: Storage space is scarce in every post-disaster setting. A huge influx of goods needs to be housed somewhere. In Banda Aceh after the Tsunami, health centres had to sacrifice patient’s rooms to store inappropriate drugs. The irony is that the medicines sent in to help people instead reduced the number of sick people who could access treatment… Drugs that are not required, those that have expired or have no expiry date have to be destroyed. Incineration is preferred as this prevents the hazard of land filled medicines contaminating water supplies or drugs being collected and sold on the black market. In Eritrea after the war of independence, seven truckloads of expired aspirin took six months to burn. The real tragedy is the cost of this process. In the Venezuela floods in 2000, seventy percent of donated pharmaceuticals had to be destroyed. To be able to cover this cost, a support line to provide psychological support to the survivors had to be shut down.

POPSFunny Caricatures by Anthony Geoffroy – I.D. 15 - slodive Funny Caricatures by Anthony Geoffroy " I.D. 15 Anthony has an amazing talent for illustrating in general but I absolutely love his caricature drawings. They remind of the video for “Land of Confusion” by Genesis. One of my favorite videos from my childhood and maybe a favorite of Anthony’s as well.

POPSThe social value of knowledge Beware Googlitis. The act of classification is a natural function of language which has helped people make sense of the world for time immemorial. The automated key-word search process removes this act and experience from people's relationship with knowledge at their peril. Googlitis is the resulting mental condition of contextless confusion and solipsism which makes it impossible to share anything beyond evanescent novelty, robbing communities of shared memory.

POPSThe Hell of War Comes Home
More from the article below: But in the vicious confusion of battle in Iraq and with no clear enemy, many said training went out the window. Slaughter became a part of life. Soldiers say the torture and killing of Iraqi civilians lurked in the ranks. And when these soldiers came home to Colorado Springs suffering the emotional wounds of combat, soldiers say, some were ignored, some were neglected, some were thrown away and some were punished. More killing by more soldiers followed. In August 2007, Louis Bressler, 24, robbed and shot a soldier he picked up on a street in Colorado Springs. In December 2007, Bressler and fellow soldiers Bruce Bastien Jr., 21, and Kenneth Eastridge, 24, left the bullet-riddled body of a soldier from their unit on a west-side street. In May and June 2008, police say Rudolfo Torres-Gandarilla, 20, and Jomar Falu-Vives, 23, drove around with an assault rifle, randomly shooting people. ...John Needham, 25, beat a former girlfriend to death."

POPSVoodoo science. Mistakes, my *ss. How dare spooky Dr. Pachauri accuse ANYONE of voodoo science. The biggest voodoo "scientists" in this entire scam have been Gore and scary Dr. Pachauri. The UN and IPCC should be sued for the billions (perhaps trillions) of wasted dollars invested on these sham reports.

POPSFlex Best Practices: Binding cast error Strange thing. When you bind an XML source to an mx:List you have to cast the data object to XML before accessing the properties otherwise you get the warning "unable to bind to property 'XXX' on class 'XML' (class is not an IEventDispatcher)". Basically because the 'data' is Object and not XML.

POPSSeattle Troll Honored With His Own Street [Article + Bridge Troll Photos] According to the city, street-name changes are rare; just four have been renamed in the past 10 years. The most recent was Edgar Martinez Way by Safeco Field. There are nine properties on Troll Avenue — warehouses, apartments and condominiums — but only one would have to have its address changed, because the others abut adjoining streets. If the City Council approves the change, it would take about 30 days to rename the street. Maps and computer systems would be changed, and the Postal Service and utilities would be notified. It would be up to the property owners to submit address changes to the post office. The change would cost about $310. Selin said the Fremont Council would pay the costs. Selin said the property owners approved the change and the community has been working on it for nine months.

POPSBeautiful bits.... "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you the, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be Happy. " (end of Deserata)

POPS(excerpt from (amplify's)) Changes in Pennsylvania Masonry I find the commentary building up on this post quite interesting, to the point that I wanted to "capture" a reminder for myself. It occurred to me that I should try using Amplify to "amplify" one of the comments, since I'm a long-time user of "recursion". Now It will be interesting to see how this methodology interacts with the other "external" components of the "spiderweb" of "information streams" that various digital agents are presenting for my review.
