Former UK Ambassador: CIA Sent People to be ‘Raped with Broken Bottles’
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-7-2009
Murray alleged that in the late 1990s the Uzbek ambassador to the US met with then-Texas Governor George W. Bush to discuss a pipeline for the region, and out of that meeting came agreements that would see Texas-based Enron gain the rights to Uzbekistan's natural gas deposits, while oil company Unocal worked on developing the Trans-Afghanistan pipeline. "The consultant who was organizing this for Unocal was a certain Mr. Karzai, who is now president of Afghanistan," Murray noted. "There are designs of this pipeline, and if you look at the deployment of US forces in Afghanistan, as against other NATO country forces in Afghanistan, you'll see that undoubtedly the US forces are positioned to guard the pipeline route. It's what it's about. It's about money, it's about oil, it's not about democracy."

Mom's Confession!:Balloon Boy Cops' Smoking Gun: Mom's Confession!
opu1537
by opu1537  11-3-2009
Balloon Boy's mother, Mayumi Heene, has admitted to investigators that the whole "my son flew away" thing was a hoax and that she and her husband, Richard, knew all along that Falcon was asleep at home. "The motive for the fabricated story was to make the Heene family more marketable for future media interest," states the search warrant served on the family's home last week, which was obtained by the Coloradoan. In fact, according to Mayumi, Richard built the flying saucer-shaped balloon expressly for this stunt, which had the world believing for a couple fraught hours that there was a little boy trapped in a nightmare straight out of the pages of Roald Dahl. "The fact that they're releasing an affidavit before an arrest is made—I've never seen that before," Richard Heene's attorney, David Lane, told the Coloradoan, adding that he had not yet seen the document. "It's further proof of what that sheriff will do to further his own agenda and try to make it unfair to the Heenes.

Young Afghan struggles to adapt after Guantanamo
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-28-2009
He says he was grabbed by police who beat him and threatened to kill his family unless he put his thumbprint to paper and admitted he'd tried to kill two U.S. soldiers. The Pashto speaker, largely illiterate, didn't understand their Persian and had little idea what he'd agreed to, he says. A U.S. judge would later agree. That day, a grenade had been thrown at a U.S. Army vehicle, injuring the two soldiers and an interpreter. Jawad was charged with attempted murder based on the confession, held at Kabul's Bagram air base, then moved to the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in early February 2003. But it spills out. He talks about having his hands bound behind his back and being forced to eat like a dog, being kicked, beaten and pepper-sprayed and subjected to excessive heat, loud noise, solitary confinement. After a year, Guantanamo records show, Jawad tried to commit suicide by banging his head against his cell wall repeatedly. "I was tortured and faced many problems

Economists Search for New Definition of Well-Being
Socratoad
by Socratoad  10-12-2009    3
"GDP has increasingly become used as a measure of societal well-being and changes in the structure of the economy and our society have made it an increasingly poor one," Stiglitz told the news agency Bloomberg in a recent interview. "So many things that are important to individuals are not included in GDP." In the model they unveiled last week in Paris, the academics recommend including other factors, such as sustainability and education. Significant Shortcomings Even the inventor of the gross domestic product measure, the late Russian-American economist Simon Kuznets, was aware that the classic method of computing GDP had significant shortcomings. "The welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measure of national income," he said in 1934. This is because the growth rate says nothing about the distribution of wealth in a country, the state of health of its citizens or their life expectancy. The number provides no information about the cleanliness of rivers or the amo

Barack Obama: "Yes, I hunted and killed Bigfoot!"
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-9-2009
To sum things up for the media, his press secretary said, "Look, Barack Obama is for everything this week!" When quiried abot the actual killing of the elusive Bigfoot and where the actual body was, Mr. Obama claims he really didn't 'kill' the Yeti, but wounded him in the arm. He tearfuly expressed his sorrow for wounding the beast as a camera crew from PETA caught the tearful confession. When the animal extremist crew left, Obama turned his attention to the reporters who were setting up to record his hunting statements. Reporters pressed him for more details about his hunting exploits. Questions ranged from..."Where did you hunt in Chicago?" to... "What caliber bullets he used in his shotgun?" Mr. Obama stumbled on the last question and had to ask an aide "what a shotgun was". The aide hastily pulled out a Bass-Pro hunting catalog flyer and showed him a picture of a kid's Daisy BB gun, which the smiling Barack 'Barry' Obama confidently pointed to as the type of weapon he s

10 Mediveval Torture Devices
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-9-2009    3
More from the article: Some courts used torture to determine if someone accused of a crime was truly guilty. This torture would take strange forms: Someone's arm would be forced into boiling water, and the verdict would be based on how well the arm healed days later. Other courts simply tortured people to get them to confess to the crime. The courts themselves even recognized, in their twisted way, that a confession given under torture held no legal meaning. Such a confession had to be confirmed by the victims while not being tortured within 24 hours. If they refused, however, they were simply tortured until they confessed again People were often tortured to force religious conversions. They also faced torture because they may have committed heresy against the established church. Thousands were tortured during the Inquisition on the pretext of religious heresy or conversion, although Inquisitors in general were often motivated by more earthly concerns - they took over the estates

Neda Agha-Soltan's Fiance Has Been Released From Evin Prison in Iran
merrie
by merrie  9-19-2009
Amnesty International had been calling for Makan's release, claiming he had been ill treated in prison and subject to coercion and torture. The circumstances of his release and his imprisonment are not immediately clear, and Amnesty International has apparently suspended its appeal but is continuing to monitor Makan's situation. Others involved in the circumstances surrounding the now-famous videotaped death of the young Neda Agha-Soltan have fled Iran in fear for their own lives, including Dr. Arash Hejazi, who attended to Neda after she was shot, and the television journalist who interviewed Caspian Makan after Neda's untimely death.

The impact of jealousy on facebook and twitter
egoldstein
by egoldstein  9-10-2009    3
This is such an honest, introspective and important comment about the impact of social media. Sure, social media is fun and cool and all that, but there is no doubt that the typical offline dynamics of envy, jealousy, competition, humility and conceit all play a serious roll in our web relations as well. As i read this post, i was moved by how honest this person was able to be (with themselves and the public). I have, at times, experienced similar feelings and i'm sure many other people have as well.

Al Qaeda Takes Credit for Last Week's Baghdad Bombings
merrie
by merrie  8-25-2009    1
Since the attack, Maliki has ordered the concrete blast walls to be put back up around sensitive sites, and the military has arrested 11 officers for negligence or aiding in the attack. The Iraqi government has accused both al Qaeda in Iraq and former Ba'athists operating from Syria of conducting the attack. On Aug. 23, state-run television aired the confession of a senior member of the Ba'ath party who is accused of masterminding the attacks. The suspect claimed he was a former policeman in Miqdadiyah in eastern Diyala province, a region that has served as a bastion for al Qaeda in Iraq. He said the attackers paid $10,000 in bribes to ensure that their trucks would pass through checkpoints into Baghdad. The attack was ordered by a senior Ba'ath official based in Syria. Today, the Iraqi government asked Syria to turn over senior Ba'athists Sattam Farhan and Mohammad Younis al Ahmed for their involvement in last week's bombings.

Dan Brown's new book: George Washington a traitor
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-10-2009    2
more: "Brown's novels are renowned for introducing sensational claims. These involve 'facts' suggesting that something which generations of people have taken for granted, is actually untrue. He weaves some real facts among the highly controversial stuff and has a good guys and bad guys race against the clock to decipher the clues. At the end of the day, it's simply a piece of formulaic fiction." Maybe so, but with six weeks to go and millions of copies of The Lost Symbol already printed in anticipation of another blockbuster, Freemasons in the US have been accusing Doubleday, Brown's publishers, of cranking up the controversy and deliberately leaking details of the plot. Masons are worried enough to be setting up a website recruiting teams of "experts" to carry out a page by page analysis as soon as the book hits the shelves.

Prompt Confession of Sin
johnyeun
by johnyeun  8-6-2009    1
This one was so personal and timely. Sometimes I feel like I need to do something to cover up my mess...but the gospel simply says, "come." It's incomprehensibly free. It is not fair. A sinner drowning in his own mess is instantly cleansed and clothed if he was to simply accept the great love God offers him at every moment.
