POPSCone of Silence? Think "spiral of silence"! Media bias takes on a whole new meaning! If mass media "knowingly" manipulates the "spiral of silence," it amounts to coercion... ya think?!!! (Hey, notice how lately the media have been saying, over and over, there's no bias--but if there is, it's unintentional.") Uh, yeah.

POPSWhat's The Scoop? Math is more fun when you challenge students with thematic situations. Who can resist ice cream, for example? Each scoop includes one element of an equation--the cone includes the answer! This bulletin board idea came from The Giant Book of Bulletin Boards (Creative Teaching Press). Key Concepts:Bulletin Boards, Games Curriculum:Math

POPSWhich Witch? Ironically, the picture they've chosen to use is not one of pagan women, but a group of English church women. They're all Christian.

POPSLarge dog savaged by killer squirrels continues: Mikhail Tiyunov, a scientist in the region, said it was the first he had ever heard of such an attack. While squirrels without sources of protein might attack birds' nests, he said, the idea of them chewing a dog to death was "absurd". "If it really happened, things must be pretty bad in our forests," he added. Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory. A Lazo man who called himself only Mikhalich said there had been "no pine cones at all" in the local forests this year. "The little beasts are agitated because they have nothing to eat," he added.

POPSIce cream cone cupcakes These turned out great! It's quite fun to do with kids as well. I'm thinking of making a new patch and involve the nephews with the frosting. I foresee a catastrophe :P My first patch :D http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq274/sheroug/IMG_0885.jpg Oh and I poured the batter into the cones directly like the post author says.

POPSPeople remember 10%, 20%...Oh Really? "People do NOT remember 10% of what they read, 20% of what they see, 30% of what they hear, etc. That information, and similar pronouncements are fraudulent. Moreover, general statements on the effectiveness of learning methods are not credible---learning results depend on too many variables to enable such precision. Unfortunately, this bogus information has been floating around our field for decades, crafted by many different authors and presented in many different configurations, including bastardizations of Dale's Cone. The rest of this article offers more detail."

POPSNYT: McCain Cheated at Saddleback Team McCain responds: "The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous," said. And that's pretty much it -- McCain was a POW and that makes it somehow impossible for him to cheat. I'm not sure that's so logical. Still, it's one more example of McCain using his Vietnam experience as a political crutch. It should also be not that the NYT and the Obama campaign aren't the same thing -- it's also an accusation, not an "insinuation." Expect a lot more of these non-responses in the future.

POPSEurope's 'Earth Explorer' to Map Planet "Inside Out" From Space The five hundred million dollar satellite is expected to survive for 20 months - at twenty-five million a month that makes it even higher maintenance than Paris Hilton, but infinitely more useful. Data provided by the satellite will map everything from ocean depths to the magma core of the planet, providing data of unprecedented accuracy for everything from climate physics to geophysics. In an interesting coincidence, GOCE will be launched on the same day the Large Hadron Collider powers up. Project leader Kal-El urges readers not to pay too much attention to this, nor ask why the nose cone seems to be full of diapers and a red cape.
