POPSLouisiana Tax Credits For Digital Media Computers are being used more and more in the making of all kinds of movies, not just animated films. So is there that much difference between video game design and movie design? Louisiana is well positioned to capitalize on the growing film industry in the state to help grow a digital arts community. In New Orleans, we have always had a thriving artist community working in the construction of Mardi Gras floats. Good article and great concept.

POPS'Woodhenge" found in soil of Hill of Tara continues: Study of the remains of tree trunks have prompted scientists to conclude the hill was once surrounded by a “wooden version of Stonehenge” that would have been 250 metres in diameter, a “massive scale” similar in size to Croke Park. Archeologists believe elaborately decorated timber posts and crossbars rose out of the ditch and surrounded the tomb, which is believed to be Tara’s oldest monument. It is estimated the mound was raised in about 3,000BC, making it a contemporary of Stonehenge, the ancient monument in the English county of Wiltshire, and the pyramids of Egypt.

POPSLifelike Animation Breakthrough AMD last week released a new chip with a billion transistors that will be able to show off creations such as Emily by allowing a much greater number of computations per second. "If you're trying to process the graphics in a photo-realistic animation, in real-time, there's a lot of computation involved," said Mr Koduri. He said that AMD's new chip - the Radeon HD 4870 X2 - was able to process 2.4 teraflops of information per second, meaning it had a capability similar to a computer that - only 12 years ago - would have filled a room. AMD's chip fits inside a standard PC. But he said that the line between what was real and what was rendered would not be blurred completely until 2020.

POPS'Indiana Jones' graphics meant to go unnoticed Apparently they forgot the original's edge-of-your-seat intensity as well. Too bad. Wait for the video - you won't miss much. Spielberg, Ford, Lucas are too old for this sort of thing, it would seem... time to retire.

POPShurray for the return of stuntmen (and stuntwomen) For a long time now, I've preferred practical, in-camera effects over computer graphics. The human eye *knows* when it's looking at a real explosion, or a real person getting thrown from a horse, or a real dam collapsing and water gushing through. I doubt the problem of the Uncanny Valley will ever be solved. I kind of hope it never is.
