Pakistan Furious Over U.S. Insurgency
blueridge
by blueridge  9-4-2008    2
Everything that Bush accused Russia of (not respecting sovereignty of Georgia) suddenly does not apply. Every invasion of Bush's imperial storm troopers (or under Clinton too for that matter, like Kosovo) is always justified, and any other country acting in self-defense or to defend their jurisdictions (e.g. Russia-S. Ossetia) is condemned. And for you hypocritical democrats who want Obama, he already stated he would do the very same thing, invade Pakistan for the "war on terrorism"! (Objective commentary based on principle must spare none who violate it). The hypocrisy is self evident, yet the MSM does not expose it. The wars will NEVER end until the people make the government stop and refuse to support ANY leader who violates the very restrictive principles of just war and the Constitution.

Protest and Revolution
sahara
by sahara  8-31-2008    3
The Boston Tea Party Yet it was the meeting that took place on December 16, 1773 that sealed Old South’s fate as one of this country’s most significant buildings. On that day, over 5, 000 men crowded into Old South and joined in a fiery debate on the controversial tea tax. When the final attempt at compromise failed, Samuel Adams gave the signal that started the Boston Tea Party. The Sons of Liberty led the way dumping 342 chests of tea into the harbor at Griffin’s Wharf. If some people had their way, this would never had occurred, they would have been jailed preemptively and we'd be singing God Save the Queen.

Iraq to US: All Troops Must Leave
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  8-25-2008
The Iraqi government is making it clear: no prior conditions for a US withdraw, no consideration of "conditions" on the ground, no "residual force" left in Iraq to train the Iraqi troops. All US soldiers must be gone by the end of 2011. Not a single one should remain. They all should just leave. The Iraqi government has given the only reason that matters for their position: viz., it's their country and they have the right to show us the door. The US isn't wanted in Iraq. It never has been. It's time to leave. A timetable for withdraw is the compromise the Iraqis are giving us. It's what they want...just like Barack Obama said.

Corporate Medicine Is Bad Medicine
sahara
by sahara  8-25-2008    2
71% of physicians believe managed care compromises patient care. 80% of Americans believe profit considerations compromise quality of care. The Health Care Finance Administration calculates that the United States would save enough money administering our health care system through a single payer to provide health care for the 44 million uninsured, while avoiding managed care and allowing free choice of providers. The result of this government-business agreement is that corporations make large profits, recipients get poorer care, for-profits appear to be able to offer services for less than the private sector, and politicians can claim they are saving money by "privatizing" (read "corporatizing"). This serves politicians and corporations, but people pay the price. The root ethical problem with corporate medicine is its abandonment of the ethos of traditional medicine, in which the needs of the patient are placed above the needs of the caregiver, in favor of an ethos of profit.

McCain's Not-So-Subtle Signal to the Gang of 10
merrie
by merrie  8-16-2008
Why would McCain risk alienating centrists with environmental concerns to drift to a pro-ANWR drilling stance? Technically, he hasn’t done it at all — he’s just held it out as a possibility. If he intends to send a signal, its intended recipients will be pro-drilling conservatives … and compromisers in Congress. No compromise with Democrats would ever include opening ANWR to its original intended purpose. If McCain threatens to openly support ANWR drilling, it effectively torpedoes the Gang of 10 compromise. The ANWR issue should really wait until we address the OCS and shale formations. Republicans should focus on those two areas, which have widespread and bipartisan support, rather than get those tangled up into the more controversial ANWR reserves. McCain knows this as well, but this rather obvious hint gives the GOP marching orders to keep fighting, rather than surrendering to a meaningless — and drill-less — compromise.

FREE email: Drill Now -- Stop the Gang of 10
merrie
by merrie  8-15-2008
The compromise plan offered by the Gang of 10 limits drilling to 50 miles off the coast of a few states, not all, and depends on an opt-in by those states. There is no mention of ANWR or of developing America's oil shale. Doing nothing is actually a better option than the compromise of the Senate's Gang of 10 because the oil drilling ban imposed by Congress expires on September 30. Democrats in Congress must renew this ban in order to continue to block America's access to her own oil. Due to Senate rules the minority may be able to block that renewal unless the Gang of 10 prevents it. Sen. McCain has not yet agreed to this compromise. Tell the Senate, the Gang of 10 and especially John McCain that voters don't want compromise with Democrats. Voters want to Drill NOW!

The Five GOP Senators Killing The Energy Issue For Americans
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2008    1
The WSJ explains that by "riding voter discontent over high gas prices, the GOP has made antidrilling Democrats this summer's headlines." But, along comes the Gang of 10, complete with five GOP senators who are quite eager to stick it to conservatives and cave in to the Democrats. The plan is a Democratic giveaway. New production on offshore federal lands is left to state legislatures, and then in only four coastal states. The regulatory hurdles are huge. And the bill bars drilling within 50 miles of the coast -- putting off limits some of the most productive areas. Alaska's oil-rich Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is still a no-go. The highlight is instead $84 billion in tax credits, subsidies and federal handouts for alternative fuels and renewables. The Gang of 10 intends to pay for all this in part by raising taxes on . . . oil companies! The Republican Five has potentially given antidrilling Democrats the political cover they need to neutralize energy through November.

Rice Says She Won't Block Strikes Against Nuclear Sites
merrie
by merrie  8-9-2008
"We don't say yes or no to Israeli military operations; Israel is a sovereign country," Ms. Rice said. "Every day that the centrifuges continue to spin brings Iran closer to a nuclear weapons capability and threatens the stability and security of the region and the world," Israel's ambassador in Washington, Sallai Meridor, said. "The international community should immediately apply additional robust sanctions." The Security Council, which has imposed three rounds of mild sanctions on Iran since 2006, has traditionally taken its time before agreeing on compromise action that manages to satisfy Russia, China, and several European countries that prefer conducting business with Iran to halting its nuclear run . The process is also very slow, the American U.N. ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, acknowledged yesterday.

Now Obama's For "Limited" Offshore Oil Drilling
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2008    1
"If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage — I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done." In Congress, both parties have fought bitterly over energy policy for weeks, with Republicans pressing for more domestic oil drilling and Democrats railing about oil company profits. Despite hundreds of hours of House and Senate floor debate, lawmakers will leave Washington for their five-week summer hiatus this week with an empty tank. "The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling," Mr. Obama said in the Post interview. "And so we don't want gridlock. We want to get something done."

I Can't Believe I Agree with "Big Business"
cmstratton
by cmstratton  8-1-2008
So I have to say, I agree with Sprint on this one - not the consumers. While those 2-year service agreements annoy me too, they do allow me to buy cheap phones and always have the latest gadgets, which I love. If they aren't allowed to lock us into 2-year contracts, they're going to stop subsidizing phones and will raise the prices on their services, which I don't think any of us wants either. As a compromise, why not require them to offer options. If you sign a 2-year contract, they'll offer you subsidized phone and service pricing. If you don't want to be locked into a contract, you can do that, but you'll pay more for your phones and service. That way, those of us who are ok with dealing with 2 year contracts to keep our prices low can do so, while those of us that don't mind paying more to keep their options open can do so as well. To me it's a win-win.

A compromise? Drilling for alternative energy tax credits
egoldstein
by egoldstein  7-31-2008    1
Seems like an interesting possibility here. Give the Republicans what they want (more drilling) in exchange for what the Democrats want (extension of tax credits for wind, solar, etc.). You would think that this combination would show that the U.S. government is truly committed to doing whatever it takes to bring down our reliance on foreign oil.

In the play, Chantecler reveals his secret for making the sun rise to Pheasant-Hen, though she begins with some hesitation in believing that Chantecler possesses such power: PHEASANT-HEN: And you believe that at the sound of your voice the whole world is suffused--? ... CHANTECLER: Ah, what I say sounds mad? I will make the dawn before your very eyes! And the wish to please you adding its ardour to the ordinary forces of my soul, I shall rise in singing, as I feel, to unusual heights, and the dawn will rise more fair to-day than ever it rose before!
