A Few Things Moore Forgot in Sicko
Rustee
by Rustee  5-10-2008    12
Michael Moore forgot to mention what the United States does have that other countries do not: A Declaration of Independence. A Constitution. A Bill of Rights. The concepts of individual rights, personal choice, free markets, private investment that develops most of the world's new medications, and the benefit of a private relationship between physicians and their patients without third-party interference. In his hymn to every other nation's superiority to America—in proportion to their commitment to collectivism—Michael Moore forgot to mention any American values at all.

Can Google Earth Save The World?
merrie
by merrie  4-11-2008
"The great thing about Google Earth is it gives you that ability to be there," said Tim Irwin, a spokesman for the U.N. organization. "We're hoping to take something that might be a little abstract for some people and make it very real." Rebecca Moore, manager of Google Earth Outreach, said she is hoping the software can be used by organizations on a larger scale. "This sort of immersive experience can lead to greater understanding, greater compassion and a desire to help," she said.

Buddhist jokes -
dakotayii
by dakotayii  3-30-2008    1
A Western Buddhist woman was in India, studying with her teacher. She was riding with another woman friend in a rickshaw-like carriage, when they were attacked by a man on the street. In the end, the attacker only succeeded in frightening the women, but the Buddhist woman was quite upset by the event and told her teacher so. She asked him what she should have done - what would have been the appropriate, Buddhist response. The teacher said very simply, "You should have very mindfully and with great compassion whacked the attacker over the head with your umbrella."

Parents Come Together to Teach Virtues to Children of Many Faiths
urbanlife
by urbanlife  3-24-2008
Classes stress the development of moral values as taught in all world religions, such as patience, honesty, and compassion. Parents work with the children to teach them to respect the different cultures and religions of the world. The moral basis of the program is to encourage children to look at their own behavior and how they contribute to a better world. "Parents of my generation feel incredible pressure to make our kids read earlier, to know math sooner and better, to get into the top preschools and then the best schools," "But what many of us forget is the other side of the character of our children, not just the academic side, but the spiritual side and their character side."

Chris Hedges: (I) Don't Believe (in) Atheists
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  3-22-2008    6
The bestselling author of The New Fascists speaks out against religious and secular fundamentalism as he explores the New Atheists: those who attack religion to advance the worst of global capitalism, intolerance and imperial projects. Hedges claims that those who have placed blind faith in the morally neutral disciplines of reason and science create idols in their own image — a sin for either side of the spectrum. He makes an impassioned, intelligent case against religious and secular fundamentalism, which seeks to divide the world into those worthy of moral and intellectual consideration and those who should be condemned, silenced and eradicated. Hedges shatters the new atheists' assault against religion in America, and in doing so, makes way for new, moderate voices to join the debate. This is a book that must be read to understand the state of the battle about faith. ISBN: 9781416567950 Author: Hedges, Chris Publisher: Free Press

Morford on Useless Drug Wars
papananook
by papananook  3-16-2008
Damn, there goes my meth supply Thank God for big local drug raids, because now you can't get coke or pot or Ecstasy anymore. Oh wait...the column continues: Is it not brutally true? Is this not pretty much the norm now, the common wisdom, going on nearly 40 years of the modern and abysmal "War on Drugs" and hundreds of billions of dollars spent and countless thousands of lives lost and prisons overflowing, and yet we're a nation that's more illegally drug-happy than ever? Sometimes you just have to ask. Because truly, this grand and insidious "war" must be one of our greatest national embarrassments, an enormous, unspoken failure, far worse in its way than the lost and disgusting war in Iraq, given how it's caused more misery and more pain and more destruction across multiple decades and nations and governments and continues to cost countless billions of dollars and yet has, as all stats and studies reveal, almost zero effect on the overall drug culture of the nation. I'll have applause and compassion for 'em when they find some semblance of conscience. How I feel, can't help it. I'm fed up with the war and all the lies... Anyway.... rant over and I hope I never see another freaky bald Gordon Liddy lookalike starin' at ME like I was fresh meat for a Gitmo cell and a little water-boarding. Jeebus and Ramona! How the gears turn
willhelm
by willhelm  3-14-2008
It is fraud. In a sense, the candidates do not even exist. A presidential candidate consists of two speechwriters, a makeup man, a gestures coach, ad agency, two pollsters and an interpreter of focus groups. Depending on his numbers, the handlers may suggest a more fixed stare to crank up his decisiveness quotient for male or Republican voters, or dial in a bit of compassion for a Democratic or female audience. The newspapers will report this calculated transformation. Yet it works. You can fool enough of the people enough of the time. When people sense this and decline to vote, we cluck like disturbed hens and speak of apathy. Nope. Just common sense.

"Shahida – Brides of Allah". An Israeli View of Female Palestinian Terrorists
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  3-10-2008    9
( Deutscher Originalartikel )

Color Psychology
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-2-2008    2
Color psychology is concerned with the effects of color on mood, emotion, behavior.Colors are not only used for decorations or adding beauty to an object, but they can be used to determine personality traits to affect people’s mood and to effect on other people around you. Each colour is connected to various areas of our body and will affect us differently emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Several ancient cultures, including the Egyptians and Chinese, practiced chromotherapy, or using colors to heal. Chromotherapy is sometimes referred to as light therapy or colourology and is still used today as a holistic or alternative treatment. In this treatment: * Red was used to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation. * Yellow was thought to stimulate the nerves and purify the body. * Orange was used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels. * Blue was believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain. I'll take red :-)

Protecting Drug Makers From Lawsuits
Geshizar
by Geshizar  2-26-2008    1
Compassion and conservatism are like mixing oil and water. Before Bush Inc. got into office it was argued by the FDA that lawsuits gave patients an added measure of protection . Now this administration says that lawsuits conflict with the agency’s ability to do its job, It seems like this administration considers any of the publics rights to be in conflict with its ability to do its job.
