POPSWhat Happens When the Microbes That Keep Us Healthy Disappear? "When antibiotics were first introduced, they were miraculous drugs—and they still are," Blaser says. "But it really wasn't fully considered that antibiotics select for resistance." And an antibiotic will not only impact the infection it is targeted for. "It will select for resistance across the microbiome," he added. Blaser doesn't call for abandoning a whole class of effective drugs, but he does advocate for a better understanding of the potential trade-offs—even if we might not yet have all the answers. "I don't think anyone was putting that trade-off on the plate," says Blaser, who notes that both doctors and patients should reserve antibiotic use to cases where they are necessary.

POPSA tribute to Original Kasper's - history, in hot dogs
More (emphasis mine): Hosted by the Site Memory Collective…from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, “Kasper’s Stories” is a part of the group’s commitment to “exploring the changing urban landscape as seen through individual and community memories of public spaces.” In the case of Kasper’s, it’s a study of one place’s impact on its residents–both when it’s there and after it disappears. “You don’t analyze how important something like this is until it’s gone,” said Kim Campisano, one of the organizers. “And you don’t realize how important it is to have that everyday connection with the same place and people in what is a vastly changing world.” …Yaglijian, smiling and mingling for two hours, said he wanted to reopen the place . “It’s time,” he said, confident that he can get the money. “I’ve kept saying that without giving the exact year for the last few years. But this time it’ll be ready again by the end of this year or early next .” YES PLEASE

POPSWhy Dontcha Ask WTF the Stimulus Was For? Conyers rude, disrespectful to FOX reporter who asked, how are you going to get something that's not specifically in the name of race if blacks are their target for assistance. Conyers snapped, we've said that it is persons of color & minorities who've been hit hardest and are the worse off. YOU GOT THAT? Jackson Lee explained, in her wisdom, that of course when the minorities are helped that whites on need will also be helped and ultimately this is about need - not color. Yes'm. Thanky.

POPSDemocrat Utopia: Free Unicorns for Everyone In addition to spending billions more than it takes in, Michigan's $2.3 billion community health budget, 90 percent of which is Medicaid, will get slammed with an additional $500 million or so by socialized medicine. And that's just part of the problem. Emergency Jobless Claims Hit All-Time High: And I thought President Obama said the economy was recovering. The number you won't hear mentioned anywhere in the Mainstream Media: 327,729. That is how many people shifted to Emergency Unemployment Compensation programs in the last week alone, hitting an all time record high of 4.2 million! Oh, and did you hear? America is broke -- and the Democrats keep spending: Politico's headline reads 'Dems to lift debt ceiling by $1.8 trillion, fear 2010 backlash'. In a nutshell, the Statists are in a central-planning frenzy and won't let up until they control health care and every energy-consuming business in the country:

POPS9/11 Tragedy Pager Intercepts Released 8:53:44 AM "NYPD Ops Div" POSSIBLE EXPLOSION WORLD TRADE CENTER BUILDING. LEVEL 3 Conspiracy theorists are hoping that the messages will reveal a "smoking gun" showing that US intelligence agencies had advanced knowledge of the attacks, which left 3,000 people dead. To help sort through the mass of information, Wikileaks is encouraging readers to post any interesting discoveries on a specially-created page on the social news website Reddit. A preview of some of the most revealing messages trailed online included several moving eyewitness testimonies. Others messages reflect the panic and misinformation that swirled on the day of the attacks. "It’s reported that a US military helicopter circled the building then crashed into or next to the Pentagon – it’s not clear to whether it was the White House or the Pentagon – they are being evacuated," reads one. http://www.wikileaks.com/wiki/Wikileaks_publishes_500%2C000_pager_messages_sent_on_9/11

POPS The Amazing World of Cat’s Eye Macro Photography I adore my kitty cat. It is going to kill me when he goes to kitty cat heaven. The poor thing is 17 years old. He sleeps next to me every night. Wakes me up in the morning. Licks my face. I love him to death. But believe it or not, there is a quite large community of photographers who are into photographing cat eyes. So here are some of the more interesting images found on Flickr.

POPSSick Around the World One secret to Japan's success? By law, everyone must buy health insurance -- either through an employer or a community plan -- and, unlike in the U.S., insurers cannot turn down a patient for a pre-existing illness, nor are they allowed to make a profit. Reid's journey then takes him to Germany, the country that invented the concept of a national health care system. For its 80 million people, Germany offers universal health care, including medical, dental, mental health, homeopathy and spa treatment. Professor Karl Lauterbach, a member of the German parliament, describes it as "a system where the rich pay for the poor and where the ill are covered by the healthy." As they do in Japan, medical providers must charge standard prices. This keeps costs down, but it also means physicians in Germany earn between half and two-thirds as much as their U.S. counterparts.

POPSAn Egregious Tragedy Has Taken Place ... into its clutches. It didn't happen to my child but it did, to someone who lived in my community. His name was Adam Walsh and he was a year younger than my own. The Walsh's horrible story, could have been mine. I, many times frequented the same place as Adam and his mom and I forever shuddered to think it my child who was cut from the herd and open to attack. We as a society should warn our children and ourselves that we are but one or two seconds from something so heinous that our lives would never recover. Whenever our children leave the safety of our sight, we should tell them, "Never allow a stranger to talk lies, in order to hurt you. Scream, cry, run and fight if need be, not to be taken by anyone.” Every child, every young person who falls victim to the savages amongst us, must be a reminder that we live in a jungle of predators but worse, these fiends look like us, so we have to be even more vigilant than jungle prey.

POPS Then There’s The Iran Bit Reidel led the Obama Administration’s strategy review of Afghanistan and Pakistan earlier this year. But he’s also worried about Iran. “It’s clear that U.S.-Iranian relations now are going to go into an increasingly difficult period,” Reidel said. “If I was sitting in Teheran, I’d be looking for the place where you could hurt the Americans the most and that’s Obama’s war right next door in Afghanistan.” Remember that Chicagoland speech in The Untouchables? “He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue.” Not exactly the community-organizing Chicago way, I know … Anyway, another nuance overlooked in the complex AfPakInd picture painted by the AP’s Reid today. It isn’t just a war about al-Qaeda, or the Taliban, or Pakistan or India. It’s a war about Iran, too. A lot like Iraq that way. jules crittenden

POPSIt shakes a village: What thousands of individual economic crises mean for an entire community
More: Through the Marin Housing Authority, Fatooh discovered three affordable housing complexes accepting applications -- then discovered a waiting list of three years. She phoned agency after agency, with no luck. Finally someone told her she'd have a better chance getting placed if she and the family spent three months living at a campsite. Meanwhile her repossessed house in Cazadero sits empty, she says. …The TV news reminds us every night: We're in a recession. But often the camera zooms in too tight: the single family facing eviction, the single worker laid off at the plant, the single patient unable to pay for cancer treatments. The panorama of such cases remains hazy: What does joblessness, foreclosure or lack of healthcare mean for entire communities? What happens to town after town of people like Kassy Fatooh? How does a multiplicity of stories like hers tear at the patchwork of agencies and services meant to hold our communities intact?

POPSNate Phelps: My father is addicted to hate Nate Phelps is the son of Fred Phelps , leader of the hate-filled Westboro Baptist Church. More: violence was a fact of life in our home, and is interwoven from my earliest memories as a child… In terms of knowing how to administer punishment, my father was an adept. Seven or eight blows would be enough to cause the skin to swell and bruise. However, if he administered a few blows, and then waited five to ten minutes before the next round, this gave the damaged tissue time to swell and stretch the skin tight. The new round of blows would cause that skin to split and bleed.… When my mother tried to intervene in some of his more brutal beatings, he’d turn on her and punish her, also. Proverbs 13:24 was core to his actions: He that spareth his rod hateth his son. But there was a fundamental contradiction. He claimed that this punishment was done out of love for his children; yet as he beat us, he’d scream his hatred at us also.

POPSA post by @steverubel helps me clarify my thoughts on bound/unbound media.
All spokes and no hub - I love that. It's also one of the truest, most insightful, and accurate statements I've read in a while. The destination web is dying - at least for content producers. I think I have pounded this drum before but I think it's a point that needs pounding. The following is cut from an email exchange I had recently (in relation to this article) - it outlines a misreading that I think most legacy publishers are caught in the throes of - namely the misreading of the bound to unbound media shift as a print to digital shift: ---------------- Thinking of the transition that's underway as a shift from print to digital is dangerously misleading. This is more than a simple shift in output technology - it's a slow yet dramatic rewiring of the information ecology in such a way that the previous command and control model becomes less effective and less profitable with each passing day. In order to combat that traditional media companies should re-frame the transit
