The Value of Money
sahara
by sahara  8-29-2008    1
George Washington was paid a salary of $25,000 a year from 1789 to 1797 as the first president of the United States. The current salary of the president has recently been doubled to $400,000, to go with a $50,000 expense account, a generous pension and several other benefits. Has the remuneration improved? Making a comparison using the CPI for 1790 shows that $25,000 corresponds to over $585,000 today, so the recent raise means current presidents have an equal command over consumer goods as the Father of the Country. When comparing Washington's salary to an unskilled worker, or the measure of average income, GDP per capita, then the comparable numbers are $11 and $24 million. Granted that would not put him in the ranks of the top 25 executives today that make over $200 million. It would, however, be many times more than any elected official in this country is paid today.

The Sean Bell Tragedy
edj1963
by edj1963  5-5-2008
Seriously, what are you supposed to say to a story like this? 50 shots fired, unarmed suspect , and acquittal for the executioners, really? How the hell does that work? I keep screaming about the rise of the police state in this country and get lambasted regularly for being a paranoid freak, let me ask you a question, how do you think minorities, read different color than Isnora, Cooper, and Oliver living in New York felt hearing these murdering bastards were acquitted? It would have been reasonable to assume that it is still open season on human beings in New York city. America loves to beat the fucking ANTI -TERROR war drum, where the hell is the fucking outrage over this nasty little bit of terror perpetrated by CIVIL PEACE KEEPERS (look it up, they ain't marshals) committing what appears to be murder. Here is a bit of truth for you, the day is coming when it aint going to matter what your skin color is, if you are perceived as a threat you will be murdered with impunity.

Many regimes are playing lip service to conservation
bs1999bs
by bs1999bs  5-2-2008
Many regimes are now trying to tap the rising concern of the public in a devious way. These regimes simply have found a new ploy to orchestrate a situation which will be see biodiversity wrecked and a new method of exploiting natural resources. At the same time they present a facade to the public which is designed to deceive!
