POPSInterview: Robert Schimmel Despite his being an insufferable prick, the interview somehow is sufferable. A very interesting interview. He's an ass, but he doesn't hide it.

POPSSad Sad Satire: Stephen Colbert & Fred Thompson Stephen Colbert is a master of pointed satire, but it's easy to lose track of the central point in all his showmanship. Lest we forget, there IS a TV personality seriously running for president, who announced his candidacy on a comedy talk show on the same network that carried his own program. By running his fiercely ignorant, populist, right-wing TV persona in the race Colbert satires the right wing preference for an unqualified everyman, and suspicion of education, experience and intelligence. Look at their criticisms of not just Gore or Kerry, but also Dukakis, Mondale, Carter, McGovern, all the way back to Adlai Stevenson! What makes this satire so sad is that there is just such a person actually running! Apparently, Democrats know running a TV personality is a joke, Republicans take it seriously.

POPS Colbert $1,000 Book Signing At Chinese Restaurant Cadres of election law attorneys are examining the numerous violations of campaign finance law that the Colbert campaign has already made and continues to make, as if comedian/politicians are somehow exempt Colbert held a book-signing for Chinese restaurant waiters and dishwashers who thronged to be allowed to pay $1,000 for an autographed copy of his book. Did Tim Russert grill Colbert on that or was he bought off with an order of Norman Hsu pork? Colbert even has corporate sponsors for his campaign: Comedy Central, which provides free television time, and Doritos, which is said to be developing his for-the-children nutrition plan. That's illegal (not to mention a prejudicial slap in the face to all voters who prefer a healthier snack of Slim Jims and carrot sticks), and the evil, faceless corporate barons who are backing Colbert know it

POPSColbert & ComCent: In Like Flynn
I have to give my respects to Comedy Central and the Colbert team for the brilliant strategy they've concocted in the Colbert for President bid. This will provide Colbert and ComCent with lampoonage of the presidential races the likes of which we have never seen in the history of ever. The last two elections were angry farces, this one may shape up to be a more engaging farce with Colbert there to skewer the candidates in a way they can't dodge and the Daily Show eyeballing the whole thing. In a capacity as a show host, you can be snubbed by candidates who don't want to face the heat, but as a candidate they cannot help but face him during debates. I have no doubt that Colbert has no real wish to be president, but rather to force the candidates to deal with his "truthiness" as it were. Meanwhile, ComCent rakes in the ratings, Colbert makes his point and sells his books and we all get a good laugh... something we could use right about now. I hope he makes it past South
