POPSPaul Newman, actor who personified cool, dies My deepest sympathy to his wife Joanne Woodward and the rest of his friends and family. "Sometimes God makes perfect people," fellow "Absence of Malice" star Sally Field said, "and Paul Newman was one of them." We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person," Robert Forrester, vice chairman of Newman's Own Foundation, said in a statement. "Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special," his daughters said in a written statement. "Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity." Newman is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur.

POPS41 Amazing Tilt-shift miniature faking photographs Believe it or not, all of these photos are of real life-size locations or objects. The technique of tilt-shift miniature faking makes the life-sized look like a miniature scale model. The process involves using Photoshop to fake a shallow depth of field and punching up the color saturation.

POPSJupiter: Astronomy Picture Of The Day 2008 May 23 The newest red spot is on the far left (west), along the same band of clouds as the Great Red Spot and is drifting toward it. If the motion continues, the new spot will encounter the much larger storm system in August. Jupiter's recent outbreak of red spots is likely related to large scale climate change as the gas giant planet is getting warmer near the equator. POPS'Quantum Hall-like effect' found in a bulk material without an applied magnetic field A team of scientists from Princeton University has found that the so called quantum Hall effect, which is observed in two-dimensional electron systems subjected to low temperatures and strong magnetic fields can occur in a bulk crystal of bismuth-antimony without any external magnetic field being present. This work, could lead to advances in new kinds of fast computing devices, of potential use in future electronic technologies.

POPSArtists Using the Full Spectrum "I’m excited by artists who are finding ways to adapt the rainbow spectrum in their work. The color field (or chromatic abstractionist) artists of the 50’s often painted with bold swaths of color but rarely used as many together as the featured artists of this article. In the 60’s, psychedelic art used colors and patterns together too. The modern artists I’ll cover in this post use color in an undiluted, anything but soft array of graphic lines and shapes resulting in work that is both vivid and alluring. Their work circumvents the boundaries their predecessors put in place to arrive at a new and bold take on prior styles."

POPSRicefield Art.... Watch Them Grow Into Something Beautiful Rice field art in the country of the rising sun. Each year these guys make new images on their field by planting rice in different patterns making various images. They use different sorts of rice for color. The result is amazing as you can see. It’s a pity they only last as long as it’s time to harvest the rice.
