POPSUnintended Lessons: Plagiarism and the University Plagiarism, like other ethical problems, flourishes in atmospheres with few consequences. The finding by one survey that only 27% of college students thought cutting and pasting someone else's work was "serious cheating" is troubling evidence of student inclination to cut corners ethically. Papers are easily copied from the Internet, and adult role models in the larger world are equivocal. Academic settings themselves may subtly encourage such behaviors if they think of their students as customers and outsource teaching to adjuncts. Plagiarism detection software, though helpful, is not without its own problems. Colleges and universities that carefully outline consequences, particularly if these are part of an honor system collaboratively run by students and faculty, can reduce plagiarism.

POPSStaying the Course - Online education in the United States, 2008 The 2008 Sloan Survey of Online Learning reveals that enrollment rose by more than twelve percent from a year earlier. The survey of more than 2,500 colleges and universities nationwide finds approximately 3.94 million students were enrolled in at least one online course in fall 2007. The sixth annual survey, a collaborative effort between the Babson Survey Research Group, the College Board and the Sloan Consortium, is the leading barometer of online learning in the United States.

POPSThe Conservative Bastion " Both women came from fundamentalist backgrounds and attended religious colleges. And both wrestled for years with the guilt they felt over being lesbians. "I thought, 'God, you played a really horrible trick on me -- making me think this was really disgusting and then making me gay,' " The couple, both 47, moved to Murrieta from Orange County looking for a place with good schools and space for children. They knew it was a conservative town but believed they could fit in. "We have always lived comfortably with our neighbors and have always been who we are," Lorian said. Now they wonder if their efforts to blend in hurt them. "

POPSWho's Getting Rich Off Prohibition? Just Look Who Opposes CA's Prop. 5 Making money as the only motivation for people doing anything is NOT a good system, there has to be much more to life than just money!!! Helping people gets help in return and makes people helpful too and more willing to work together. And who wants drug addicts in prison where drugs are also available instead of being out on the streets getting help to drop the habit? The drug peddlars should be in prison, not the addicts.

POPS Ego And Mouth by Thomas Sowell . . . by those who have accomplished something, and give it to whomever he chooses in the name of "spreading the wealth," is the kind of casual arrogance that has led to many economic catastrophes in many countries. The equally casual ease with which Barack Obama has talked about appointing judges on the basis of their empathies with various segments of the population makes a mockery of the very concept of law. After this man has wrecked the economy and destroyed constitutional law with his judicial appointments, what can he do for an encore? He can cripple the military and gamble America's future on his ability to sit down with enemy nations and talk them out of causing trouble. Add to Obama and Biden House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and you have all the ingredients for a historic meltdown. Let us not forget that the Roman Empire did decline and fall, blighting the lives of millions for centuries.

POPSScandal of the Education Profit Machine My sense is that this is not peculiar to the US. The imperative to fill courses can lead to a wicked student guidance service, Some say that those who manage to graduate have worthless qualifications since the imperative to show results lowers the educational achievement threshold; on the latter I am not qualified to comment.

POPSpersonal computer The author recommends to use a PC for schools, i.e, :"If you are buying a Mac for school, remember that much of the software and technical support provided by colleges is geared towards Windows, so even if you buy a Mac, you might end up having to pay for a copy of Windows to use via Boot Camp."

POPSMake-Believe Maverick--McCain's true nature EXCELLENT article Highly recommend if you are wavering or undecided...Dramesi continued: "McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man," Dramesi says today. "But he's still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in."
