Bad news for Mississippi's black colleges
enbar
by enbar  11-18-2009
It looks like the end might be in sight for several of Mississippi's HBCUs. In the wake of the 1992 US v. Fordice decision -- which, ironically, represented an attempt to undo the historic effects of the state's segregated higher education system -- they were starved of funds, receiving less than 3% of the budget they were allotted. They are now being condemned as non-performers (surprise, surprise) and will probably undergo massive program cuts.

What's Become of the Jewish-Zionist Press?
merrie
by merrie  10-4-2009    1
Today it is precisely this realization that leads me to refuse to serve. I cannot recognize the humanity of Israelis but not that of Palestinians." The two women, both 19, were invited to campus by the Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine. The same day the women will also appear at Harvard and Northeastern universities... Am I imagining that at one time two such people, brought to campus by such a group, would have been treated as a shameful matter? That perhaps a paper like The JEWISH Advocate would have provided the context for readers to understand this, rather than giving them a straight-up second page bit of publicity? Is shame dead? Are we supposed to admire these girls for standing up for the wrong values and spreading lies? Or have we no values any longer? Can we no longer call a lie for what it is? And look how this supposed Zionist newspaper treats anti-American and anti-Israeli leftist groups Code Pink and Jewish Voice for Peace:

Four things about the Hofstra rape/recant story
Lexica
by Lexica  9-22-2009
More: 4) Honestly, this case just makes me so sad. I think it's highly likely that something bad happened that night, whether or not she literally consented. It's hard to imagine something like this happening if all the parties had engaged in direct sexual communication and sought enthusiastic, affirmative consent - not just lack of protest. For me, this whole mess just demonstrates how badly we need a real sea-change in how we talk about and view sex in our culture. Here's where a conclusion should go, but this column has none. Because this case has none. And this crisis has none. At least none so far. But we're working on it. Right?

Irish Colleges and Swine Flu
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-25-2009
In the event of a mass swine flu epidemic, TCD is preparing to allow staff to work from home, limit access to the college and its halls of residence, and to set up isolation bays if required. It is also preparing to coordinate a mass vaccination programme, although this will depend upon when a vaccine becomes available. "Obviously, if a very large number of cases occurs in a short period of time, then the Public Health Department may well advise the temporary closure, or restriction of access to schools and colleges across the city or country," McGrath said. "We would hope that the vaccination programme will have a significant impact on the number of cases and therefore that fatalities will be few." He added that the college's student-counselling service has a plan in place to provide "the necessary supports to staff and students in the event of deaths from the virus". The state's largest university, UCD, has also compiled its own detailed flu-contingency plan, wh

Wannabe-Look Good, All Show, No Go Green Colleges
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  8-20-2009
If after the headline, the story said 650 universities and colleges to offer 50% of their classes online and limit their sports programs to competing with institutions within 50 miles from each other, I might believe they were serious and you would probably agree. But since colleges and universities are businesses first, their signing letters of good intention are just about as effective as business and governments doing the same. And I should add, most of us just sign on as well and do noting to change our I'll-use-all-the-energy-I-can-afford life style. Example: A local USEPA office built next to the University of Cincinnati has no sidewalk access directly into its property. I have to walk in the driveway in competition with vehicles. They assume everyone will drive there, then park and walk. Grin. And Kroger Foods, assumes you will drive in park, walk a little way then ride around in a cart that makes it look like they are being nice to disabled people.

Do they mean Code Pink which never missed an opportunity to bash the military and our “terrorist” former president? How about ACORN whose tactics have earned that organization indictments–and convictions? How about the New Black Panther Party whose attempt to intimidate voters in Philadelphia was referred to the Justice Dept.–which inexplicably dropped the case? How about MoveOn.org which called General Petraeus General “Betrayus” for “crime” of dedicating his life to protecting America? And who can possibly forget the countless number of left-wing college students on campuses across the country who have intimidated, harassed–and attacked–conservative speakers daring to exercise their First Amendment rights? Hypocrites one and all, but they pale in comparison to an administration headed by a former community organizer not only denigrating community organizing, but creating a website, flag@whitehouse.gov for Americans who wish to rat out their fellow Americans f

I still think Nicholas Carr was right on point with his book, The Big Switch. The IT departments will soon shrink or disappear. Personally I think one step further is people will start becoming free of their desktops and look more to mobile and netbooks or tablets and work in new and improved ways. Cube life is non-productive as are crowded classrooms and lecture halls. Smaller, distributed classes with real-world meetups whe needed. Perhaps it will also force companies to push departments to collaborate better.

The Trouble With Socialism
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-3-2009    1
Liberals can never say exactly what they want because it’s scary. That’s why they don’t work on talk radio. If they say what they’re goals are unfiltered, it even scares themselves. Look at college campuses; if liberals were unrestrained, is there any doubt their final goal would be socialism and fascism? They inch into any control they can have about our finances and behavior and clamp down on it like wolverines never letting go, but they never talk about their ultimate goals except in the vaguest terms (”Change and happiness!”) because they’re well aware of how much it would freak people out. They want socialism and government control, but they just don’t want to state it that way. Conservative ideals can be stated frankly, though, and not send people running. It can be a little scary - freedom and responsibility is scary - but it’s an argument people will accept. We need to state frankly what our goals are. Lay out a real vision for the future to inspire people.

Amir Abbas Fakhravar Is An Iranian Jailed Dissident
merrie
by merrie  6-25-2009
Fakhravar was a writer and a columnist for two major newspapers, “Khordad” and “Mosharekat” in Iran. He had a column called, “Who knows better than people” where he exposed the wrong-doings of the government authorities against his fellow students. With the help of his American friends and Iranian dissidents, Fakhravar moved to the United States in May 2006. He met with President Bush, prominent members of congress, scholars, and policy makers to discuss the atrocities of the Islamic Republic. In July 20, 2006, Fakhravar testified in a historic event before the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee of the US Senate. Fakhravar attended numerous conferences in the US and Europe to discuss the situation of young Iranians, jailed journalists, and political prisoners. He is a regular speaker on the current situation of Iran in college campuses, and international stage. Fakhravar spoke at a panel with Vaclav Havel, Natan Sharansky and Jose Maria Aznar at

"Dodomayor," and proud of it.
pecksnif
by pecksnif  6-16-2009
I realized that Sotomayor does something I’ve heard before. She employs a very common strategy in the politically correct world of college campuses. In order to defend her position on racial preferences, she must first deny that she understands the terms. In her world, merit and ethnicity are synonymous. Therefore, one’s “experience” being Hispanic is equal with a high LSAT score. As Sotomayor points out, Hispanics and other minority students — though not Asians — score lower on many standardized tests. She acknowledges these “statistics.” Instead of attacking the real culprits of this discrepancy, likely poverty, poor education, and parental education levels, she believes the system itself must bend to accommodate “fairness.”

Historically, men have been in control, but there are now efforts to get women more involved. 8. There are many joint results. 7. Both are prominent on college campuses, and are usually practiced indoors. 6. Most people wish they knew more about both subjects. 5. Both involve long and hard problems, and can produce interesting topology and geometry. 4. Both merit undivided attention, but mathematicians are prone to think about one while doing the other. 3. Saint Augustine was hostile to both, and Alan Turing took an unusual approach to both. 2. Both typically begin with a lot of hard work and end with a great but brief reward. 1. Professionals are generally viewed with suspicion, and most do not earn high pay.

Koch: Democrats Using 'Stealth' To Re-Engineer Society With 'Stimulus' Package
merrie
by merrie  2-11-2009    1
Department of Education’s current budget. The proposed emergency expenditures on nearly every realm of education, including school renovation, special education, Head Start and grants to needy college students, would amount to the largest increase in federal aid since Washington began to spend significantly on education after World War II. Critics and supporters alike said that by its sheer scope, the measure could profoundly change the federal government’s role in education, which has traditionally been the responsibility of state and local government.” While I support the ultimate goals of the new Democratic congressional majority for significant changes in our society, I do not want those changes imposed through stealth. I want them debated and voted on by a Congress able to sort out the good from the bad in shaping legislation. That is not what is happening now.
