POPSAn Aspirin A Day Keep the Doctor Away, Doesn’t It? The idea of preventing coronary artery disease, the forerunner of heart attacks (myocardial infarction, or MI) is well founded. Treating high blood pressure, lowering raised cholesterol levels, losing weight, exercising, and stopping smoking are all effective ways of lowering your chances of having an MI. Aspirin has both anti-platelet and anti-inflammatory effects, both useful properties when it comes to reducing the likelihood of coronary thrombosis, or clotting. Almost all studies have shown an increased risk of hemorrhage with aspirin use. One baby aspirin (81 mg) a day, taken with food, is enough. There's no advantage in taking higher doses for this particular use, and you may well increase the chance of side effects. Go to the article for more details of pros and cons.

POPSVirtual twins could bring the end of animal research How far are we from building useful and practical virtual twins? POPSArtificial Liver Shows Early Promise Toxins in the plasma flow through the fiber membrane, where they are metabolized by the liver cells. The cells also synthesize essential proteins, such as blood-clotting factors, which diffuse back into the plasma. The filtered plasma is then recombined with the cellular components of blood and returned to the patient. A clinical trial in China found that patients treated with the ELAD fared significantly better than those who did not get the treatment. Another study began in the United States in October. Artificial Liver Shows Early Promise

POPSBest foods for your heart Spinach can help keep your ticker in top shape thanks to its stores of lutein, folate, potassium, and fiber. Full of fiber and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, a little sprinkling of flaxseed can go a long way for your heart. Top a bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain cereal with a smidgen of ground flaxseed for the ultimate heart-healthy breakfast. Soy Soy may lower cholesterol, and since it is low in saturated fat, it's still a great source of lean protein in a heart-healthy diet.

It ain't over 'til it's over.

POPSMr. Huckabee Should Keep His Word to AIDS Mom Mike Huckabee made some pretty intolerant statements in the past about people living with AIDS. He claims he was misquoted yet refuses to renounce his original statements. Ryan White's mom has asked to meet with Mr. Huckabee and he agreed to have such a rendezvous, but after 29 days he still has not responded to requests for a date.

POPSHuckabee AIDS comment alarms victim's mom Huckabee outlined his views in 1992 for the AP more than a year after President George H.W. Bush, a fellow Republican, urged an audience of business executives not to fire or otherwise discriminate against employees infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. I would love to see him try and explain himself to this woman.

POPSFDA Rejects Generic Lovenox This is a defeat for Momenta and its partner Novartis, of course, but it is also a setback for the prospect of generic knockoffs of biotech protein drugs. Biogenerics, or biosimilars, whatever you want to call them, look as if they'll have a long road to market in the U.S.

POPSStudy: New Heart pill better than 'Plavix' The drug prevents and clears blood clots in cases of blocked arteries in heart patients, dialysis treatment, and other illnesses, where blood clotting needs to be prevented. I am taking a medication with a similar function. Warfarin Sodium, AKA Rat poison, is regulated so clotting times are specific, to prevent clots forming, however the levels can take some days to adjust, and a level too high can result in a stroke, or internal bleeding. It is used because it is the most effective mediation at the moment, and is perfectly safe if kept monitored. Aspirin also has the same anticoagulant properties. The need for drugs like these will increase with the number of elderly, and the use of prosthetics that can cause clots to be formed.
