Annual Reno National Championship Air Races
merrie
by merrie  9-19-2009    1
The Reno Air Races, also known as the National Championship Air Races, take place each September at the Reno Stead Airport a few miles north of Reno, Nevada, USA. Air racing is billed as 'the world's fastest motor sport' and Reno is one of the few remaining venues. Begun in 1964, the Reno Air Races feature multi-lap, multi-aircraft races between extremely high performance aircraft on closed ovoid courses which range between about 3 miles (Biplanes and Formula One) and about 8 miles (Jet, Unlimited) in length per lap. Aircraft in the Unlimited class, which consists almost entirely of both modified and stock World War II fighters, routinely reach speeds in excess of 400 miles per hour. In 2003, Skip Holm piloted Terry Bland's modified P-51D Mustang, Dago Red, and reached an all-time speed record of 507.105 mph in a six-lap race around the eight-and-a-half mile course. The recently added Sport Class racers, mostly homebuilt aircraft,

Holocaust in Yugoslavia
katsteevns
by katsteevns  8-24-2009    3
Whether we are studying the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Turks, the genocides against Serbs, Jews and Roma during World War II, the extermination of Native American peoples by the US government, or any other crime of genocide against an entire people, the root cause can be traced to a deliberate policy of imperialist rule. The case of Yugoslavia is instructive because it shows how the imperialist countries, in this instance Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, used smaller client states or nations, such as the Croats, the Albanians, the Bosnian Muslims, the Bulgarians, and the Hungarians to commit genocide, even when, as with the case of Bulgarians, they would not do this within their own national borders. In most instances, civil war or genocide serve the interests of imperialist powers whose aim is to rule through a condominium of power with client states. This lesson is not lost on anyone concerned with the situation in Iraq.

Howard Zinn's "Three Holy Wars"
papananook
by papananook  5-18-2009
As a Conscientious Objector, I'm often asked if I would fight in a "good war" or a "just war" and after some deep soul searching I would have to say NO. Howard Zinn gives words to SOME of my contemplations about this dilemma. And then there were the very surreal hypothetical questions asked by those old white men on my draft board--"Would you defend your sister if she was being raped?" Of course I would, you old asshole, I just wouldn't KILL the rapist and I certainly won't go 8,000 miles to fight a war and kill people who never threatened my sister, dumbfuck!

What could have been expected of an AWOL cold fish with not an ounce of empathy for the families of the soldiers that he'd sent to their deaths for his LIES with illegal invasions. He nearly ran over Cindy Sheehan at Crawford to avoid commiserating with her on her son's death He could not find time to attend any funerals away from his golf and playing with himself. He banned any public images of the 'final farewell', probably to disguise his absence.

Permanent Youth Indoctrination....................?
davboz
by davboz   4-6-2009
Remember youth likes to rebel. A couple generations later kids will see this as the rigid status quo that it is and resist, responding to the nature of their human spirit which calls for freedom to formulate their OWN GODDAMN VIEWS OF THE WORLD! If all seems lost in our lifetimes, we can at least hold out hope for the distant future and the instincts which gave birth to America in the beginning. Which ~ as those with eyes still to see are able to ~ is what is being repressed and demonized by the current powers.

King's Anti-Imperialism and the Challenge for Obama
ratilfar
by ratilfar  1-19-2009
Obama's plan to order the beginning of a withdrawal from Iraq on day one of his administration is consistent with the anticolonialism of the King tradition and of Obama's own autobiography. But the dark clouds over the Obama administration are Afghanistan and Palestine. What Obama accomplishes on those two issues will powerfully shape his presidency. Only if he can avoid perpetuating colonial abuses in both can he hope to claim the mantle of anticolonialism from King and from his own father. For the Bush administration assiduously robbed other human beings of their status as images of the divine, and the US will not be whole until Afghans and Palestinians can say in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at Last, Free at Last, Great God Almighty, I'm Free at Last."

Congress then has the nerve to give themselves auto raises of $4,000+ .. I can't stand it anymore!!

Citizens Will Risk Arrest to Bring Indictment of Bush and Cheney
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-8-2008    6
In April 2008, Obama said that as president he would indeed ask his new Attorney General and his deputies to "immediately review the information that's already there" and determine if an inquiry is warranted. It is the responsibility of citizens to make sure this happens. Chief Prosecutor at the Nuremberg Tribunals following World War II, stated, "let me make clear that while this law is first applied against German aggressors, the law includes, and if it is to serve a useful purpose it must condemn aggression by any other nations, including those which sit here now in judgement." It is time, no matter who becomes our next president, to bring the criminals of the Bush regime to justice. We, the people, have the power and we can restore justice. Our group would include someone who was directly affected by the illegal invasion of Iraq.

Obama's 2002 Speech In Chicago
merrie
by merrie  10-27-2008    2
. . . . . and “heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka.” By Memorial Day 2008, however, Obama was claiming that it was his “uncle” who was “part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz.” This proved problematic as well because Auschwitz, as the RNC pointed out, was actually liberated by the Russians. One would think Obama might have remembered this striking detail in 2002 when he attributed the liberation of Auschwitz to his grandfather’s “fellow troops.” As to why Obama opposed the war in Iraq six months before it began, there is some confusion. This point would have delighted the crowd at Chicago’s Federal Plaza in October 2002, if Obama had actually made it, but he did not. There, Obama made a more politic claim entirely, namely that Saddam “butchers his own people” and has “developed chemical and biological weapons and coveted nuclear capacity.”

Memorial Day was Decoration Day, Civil War Remembrance
blueridge
by blueridge  5-25-2008    5
Memorial Day has become Veterans Day II--usurped to cover-up this real Great War, which the MSM does not discuss, because of its implications. (Could the present U.S. government be one of a Union by force, a tyranny, an empire?) Now you only hear alot of talk, and outright lies, about how all soldiers in all wars "fought for our freedom". Pardon me for being intellectually honest--no they all did not! The truth is that since the Civil War, Americans have not been fighting to defend America's freedom but an empirical agenda toward global Democracy. Pat Buchanan is about to complete a new book about WWII called the Unnecessary War, which is sure to stir the fires of the real "historical revisionism" fed to everyone in public schools. The Iraq war is not to defend America's freedom any more than Wilson or Roosevelts. People should use Memorial Day to consider what the Civil War was really about that cost the lives of more than all other U.S. wars combined

American Generations and The Fourth Turning (Present Time)
zizzy
by zizzy  5-14-2008
Based on historical patterns, America will hit a once-in-a-century national crisis within the decade...'like winter,' the crisis or 'fourth turning' cannot be averted. It will last 20 years or so and bring hardship and upheavals similar to previous fourth turnings, such as the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the Great Depression and World War II. The fourth turning is a perilous time because the result could be a new 'golden age' for America or the beginning of the end.' 'It all will begin with a 'sudden spark' that catalyzes a crisis mood 'around the year 2005.' Neil Howe, William Strauss, The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy, 1997, ISBN 0-553-06682-X

American Generations and Historical Change
zizzy
by zizzy  5-14-2008    1
Crisis. A Crisis is a decisive era of secular upheaval. The values regime propels the replacement of the old civic order with a new one. Wars are waged with apocalyptic finality. Examples of Crisis eras include the Wars of the Roses (1459-1487), the Spanish Armada Crisis (1569-1594), the colonial Glorious Revolution (1675-1704), the American Revolution (1773-1794), the American Civil War (1860-1865), and the twin emergencies of the Great Depression and World War II (1932-1945), and now possibly the present time from September 11th, 2001. High. A High is an era between a Crisis and an Awakening. The most recent High was seen between World War II and the Consciousness Revolution. William Strauss and Neil Howe, in their books Generations (ISBN 0-688-11912-3) (1991) and The Fourth Turning (1997), divide Anglo-American history into saecula, or seasonal cycles of history

Slavery By Another Name
dulios
by dulios  5-2-2008    3
I saw Douglas Blackmon, Wall Street Journal reporter and author of "Slavery by Another Name", on the Tavis Smiley Show tonight. I had never before heard about neo-slavery. According to Blackmon, the South was culpable; the North was complicit. Modern companies, including US Steel, profited. The system didn't come to an end until the 1940s, "partly due to fears of enemy propaganda about American racial abuse at the beginning of World War II." 13th Amendment be damned, this sale of "convicts" to private enterprises to pay of "debts" was perfectly legal until 1951.

Czar Nicholas II Nine Decade Mystery Solved

Alexei was one of the more compelling of the victims, drawing sympathy because of his hemophilia. His mother's terror of the disease and fear that he would not live to gain the throne were key to her falling under the thrall of the hypnotic and sexually ravenous self-declared holy man Rasputin, who exerted vast influence on the royal family. Rumors persisted that some of the family had survived and escaped. Claims by women to be Anastasia were particularly prominent, although there were also pretenders to Alexei's and Maria's identities. "It was 99.9 percent clear they had all been killed; now with these shards, it's 100 percent," said Nadia Kizenko, a Russian scholar at the University at Albany, State University of New York. "They say that as long as the last soldier remains unburied, the war continues," Lukyanov told AP. "So long as the last victim of Bolshevik terror and the Communist regime remains unrehabilitiated, the repression will continue."
