This has been a gradual and highly fulfilling process over the last decade. Watching my two daughters also choose a plant-based diet, with vast improvements in their mood and energy, has also been deeply satisfying.

Sick Around the World

One secret to Japan's success? By law, everyone must buy health insurance -- either through an employer or a community plan -- and, unlike in the U.S., insurers cannot turn down a patient for a pre-existing illness, nor are they allowed to make a profit. Reid's journey then takes him to Germany, the country that invented the concept of a national health care system. For its 80 million people, Germany offers universal health care, including medical, dental, mental health, homeopathy and spa treatment. Professor Karl Lauterbach, a member of the German parliament, describes it as "a system where the rich pay for the poor and where the ill are covered by the healthy." As they do in Japan, medical providers must charge standard prices. This keeps costs down, but it also means physicians in Germany earn between half and two-thirds as much as their U.S. counterparts.

Britains forgotten children

MORE than 150 children in Glasgow were found to be suffering from malnutrition after being screened for the condition. A pilot study found that 10% of more than 1,000 children tested on admission to hospital had the condition as a result of poor diet or chronic illness. The pilot was held for a new screening system that has been developed in the city. The tool, believed to be the first of its kind in Europe, can identify children aged from one year who are suffering from malnutrition or are at risk of developing it. It was created by dietary and medical experts at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill and is based on a simple scoring system. Doctors say the Paediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS) could be adapted for use in the community to help identify children at risk of malnutrition or obesity which puts them at risk in later life of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A pilot of 1571 carried out at the hospital showed that 157 were suffering

Flu Alert: 10 Warning Signs to Call the Doctor
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-24-2009
People at higher risk for severe illness include pregnant women, young children, and adults with chronic illnesses or weak immune systems. Those of us caring for older adults feel particularly worried, because seniors are generally at high risk for getting very sick from seasonal influenza. The H1N1 strain is a little different in this respect; adults over 60 seem to be somewhat protected from it. Still, when older adults get sick, we need to watch them carefully to make sure it’s not developing into something more serious.

It shakes a village: What thousands of individual economic crises mean for an entire community
Lexica
by Lexica  10-9-2009
More: Through the Marin Housing Authority, Fatooh discovered three affordable housing complexes accepting applications -- then discovered a waiting list of three years. She phoned agency after agency, with no luck. Finally someone told her she'd have a better chance getting placed if she and the family spent three months living at a campsite. Meanwhile her repossessed house in Cazadero sits empty, she says. …The TV news reminds us every night: We're in a recession. But often the camera zooms in too tight: the single family facing eviction, the single worker laid off at the plant, the single patient unable to pay for cancer treatments. The panorama of such cases remains hazy: What does joblessness, foreclosure or lack of healthcare mean for entire communities? What happens to town after town of people like Kassy Fatooh? How does a multiplicity of stories like hers tear at the patchwork of agencies and services meant to hold our communities intact?

At the end, offering comfort, not a cure
Lexica
by Lexica  8-21-2009
More: A third of Medicare spending goes to patients with chronic illness in their last two years of life…Does calling on one more team of specialists at the end of a long and final hospital stay reduce this spending, or add another cost to already bloated medical bills? Dr. O’Mahony and other palliative care specialists often talk about wanting to curb the excesses of the medical machine, about their disillusionment over seeing patients whose bodies and spirits had been broken by the treatment they had hoped would cure them. But their intention, in a year observing their intimate daily interactions with patients, was not to limit people’s choices or speed them toward death…They argue that a frank acknowledgment of the inevitability of death allows patients to concentrate on improving the quality of their lives, rather than lengthening them, to put their affairs in order and to say goodbye before it is too late.

When illness means you don't look like yourself anymore
Lexica
by Lexica  8-20-2009
More: Today, my most obvious issue, a side effect of treatment for head and neck cancer, is chronic facial swelling, also known as moon face. The removal of several lymph nodes from my neck and subsequent radiation treatments have rendered my lymphatic system unable to drain fluids from my head. I get up each morning and remind myself that I’m going to be swollen, tired and nauseous. So if I get something done, like epoxy the hatches of the kayak I’m building, it’s a great day. Or if I get through all my (liquid) food, it’s a great day. Or if one of our cats comes up to say hello, rubs itself on my leg and settles down for a nap near me … yep: great day!… My neighbor’s 3-year-old daughter treats me just like everyone else, someone to flirt with! So if you see a slightly hobbled, melon-headed man wearing a hat, walking toward you with a stick, just say, “Hi, it’s a great day, isn’t it?” And I’ll say, “Yep, it’s a great day,” and feel it too.

Prevention world buzzing after health report
tabsey

Through my health clinic, I visit a nurse 4 times a year to work on health programs that focus on wellness. Visits to my doctor are less frequent and usually only for prescriptions and a discussion on cricket or golf. ( That, in itself, is an uplifting experience after visits which were all about trying things to get better.) I suppose I will have to praise them for being ahead of many in Australia.

"....Most Americans Already Happy with [Healthcare] Coverage
jatfla
by jatfla  6-24-2009
The first few years of our marriage (with small children) healthcare insurance coverage was difficult but manageable because of responsible financial discipline. Over the last 30 yrs. we have been very happy & felt secure, cared for by our doctors. Trips to the ER with elderly parents have been a challenge but I do not support this "national Health Care" proposal that is being *quickly* shoved upon us all. Sadly my daughter does not have health care coverage, but has managed to meet her needs & those of her children with assistance.

Does Your Doctor Tweet?
vienova4

With the Internet revolution--and most recently social networking explosion--people are getting more (and sometimes inaccurate) information online. Your family doctor may no longer be the go-to expert to consult on health matters. Doctor-patient relationship is shifting, since patients are gaining the power of knowledge. As a result, healthcare providers (including mental health professionals) are increasingly leveraging on technology to enhance support for their patients and clients.

Splenda causes weight gain, impairs digestion, and affects chemotherapy & other drugs
Lexica
by Lexica  5-5-2009    5
More: As of 2006, only six human trials have been published on Splenda. Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption, and the two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects. 36 people sure doesn’t sound like many, but wait, it gets worse: only 23 total were actually given sucralose for testing, and here is the real kicker — The longest trial at this time had lasted only four days, and looked at sucralose in relation to tooth decay, not human tolerance. Even more shocking, the absorption of Splenda into the human body was studied on a grand total of six men! Based on that one human study, the FDA allowed the findings to be generalized as being representative of the entire human population. Including women, children, the elderly, and those with any chronic illness — none of whom were ever examined.

Software to take control of chronic illness
rachaelkeriwilliams

Awesome! Now let me just find an open source program that is available for free. Rather than having to go through the hoops of getting medicare/ medicaid/ tbi waiver to pay for something that will empower me and REALLY help me recover. Would also be a good addition to a health-related participatory research project. Maybe the company wants to start an open source branch to speed up the development of customized versions- well, since I haven't even been to the site yet, I will do that before any further speculation.

Americans Putting Off Health Care because of Costs

Only ideologues would deny that an important element of a good health care system is access and affordability. When 27% of Americans put off needed health care because of the cost to them, we have a failed system.
