The mission and target was Osama bin Ladin
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-22-2009
Do we need more troops in Afghanistan to capture Osama bin Ladin or to not allow him to re-establish a base in Afghanistan? I don't think so. Would it be nice to leave there with a democratic regime in place and economic development going forward? Sure but that's not reason enough for sendingin more troops or planning now on when the last US troops leave for home.

Barack’s Junior Brownshirts Are Everywhere
merrie
by merrie  5-6-2009    4
Whoever stamped ”DENIED” across my document clearly felt justified in defacing it. Though petty, this was a hostile act - another tiny blow in the insidious war on free thought. … Instead of gossiping at the water cooler, today’s privileged jugend hover in packs around TV monitors to mock the usual suspects - poor old Sarah Palin, the Tea Partiers, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Miss California (chivalry is deader than dead). Together, they telegraph their warning to anyone who might disagree: don’t. … Twenty-somethings are fond of declaring, “It’s a free country!” But is it? Really? hese kids - who see nothing odd about surrounding themselves with creepy, halo’d icons of The One - mock folks who actually make the effort to exercise their right to free speech on talk radio, at Tea Parties, and at workplace printers. They think this double standard is perfectly normal.

The Caning of Senator Charles Sumner ~ 1856
merrie
by merrie  12-1-2008    9
is chaste in his sight—I mean," added Sumner, "the harlot, Slavery." Representative Preston Brooks was Butler's South Carolina kinsman. If he had believed Sumner to be a gentleman, he might have challenged him to a duel. Instead, he chose a light cane of the type used to discipline unruly dogs. Shortly after the Senate had adjourned for the day, Brooks entered the old chamber, where he found Sumner busily attaching his postal frank to copies of his "Crime Against Kansas" speech. Moving quickly, Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto the unsuspecting Sumner's head. As Brooks struck again and again, Sumner rose and lurched blindly about the chamber, futilely attempting to protect himself. After a very long minute, it ended. Bleeding profusely, Sumner was carried away. Brooks walked calmly out of the chamber without being detained by the stunned onlookers. Overnight, both men became heroes in their respective regions. . . . . .

Is Chivalry Dead or Should it Be?
Packrat61
by Packrat61  1-17-2008    11
Personally I still enjoy a man opening the door for me. It doesn't lesson who I am or make me feel slighted. it just feels nice. I will hold the door for him as well. But there is something special about a man who will open the car door for the women he loves. What do you think?

Anna Nicole Smith: She Embodied America...
invictus
by invictus  2-16-2007
Some have condemned her as a "gold digger," but she wanted what you are supposed to want--money--and she worked industriously with what she had. And one must note that in America--where most adult relations have been recast as transactions--breast enhancement is the perfect meeting of commerce and sex: a means to lay bare the frankness of your opening gambit, and to make plain that it invites a response. What you see is what you get; now let me see how you propose to get it.

What If...? An alternative history of the world
invictus
by invictus  8-31-2006
If Rome had survived it might have fought off Islam where Byzantium failed, and handled the Mongols better than their medieval successors. In the Americas they wouldn't have practiced genocide as the British did, but assimilated, in the Roman way. In Europe, united in empire, there would be no feudalism, no chivalry - no parliaments - and no Great Britain.
