POPSObama Meeting with The Daliai Lama Is Delayed more @ clip source For the first time since 1991, the Tibetan spiritual leader will visit Washington this week and not meet with the president. Since 1991, he has been here 10 times. Most times the meetings have been "drop-in" visits at the White House. The last time he was here, in 2007, however, George W. Bush became the first sitting president to meet with him publicly, at a ceremony at the Capitol in which he awarded the Dalai Lama the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress's highest civilian award.

POPSHow To Piss Off China & Screw The Consumer All at the same time. More dangerous tires on the road? Also, in timely fashion, seeking out the Dali Lama is not a soothing fact to the Chinese. Timed more strategically, you might be able to say, "Screw 'em." I hear something about needing their support at the U.N.against, Oh..N.Korea,...Iran,..maybe even Chavez.

POPSChina Seeks Export Carbon Relief . . . From Importers "It is a very important item to make a fair agreement," Mr Li said in Washington. He argued that it was unfair to put the highest burden on China. "We are at the low end of the production line for the global economy," he said. "We produce products and these products are consumed by other countries, especially the developed countries. This share of emissions should be taken by the consumers but not the producers," he said. Mr Li also criticised proposals by the US to place carbon tariffs on goods imported from countries that do not limit those gases blamed for a rises in global temperatures. "If developed countries set a barrier in the name of climate change for trade, I think it is a disaster," Mr Li said. Scepticism Working out quite how to put Mr Li's suggestion into practice would be a logistical nightmare, other delegates in Washington said, even if the idea was ever agreed in principle.

POPSThe US is Begging Communist China Now Look at what we've been reduced: beggars. We are begging Communist China to continue to buy US bonds as a way to finance our deficit. And to think that George Bush inherited a budget surplus.

POPSSo off shoring creates jobs? The article goes on to state that the powers that be are ignoring this, even as our countries crumble under unemployment and increased government spending.

POPSChineese savings help to inflate housing bubble From 2001-2006 the boom years in real estate and consumer spending was financed by the Chinese. Leave it to the experts, quoting Bill Clinton the private sector knows how to do it best. So the Chinese now own America.

POPSChina announces huge stimulus package Will be very interesting to see over the short term if all the stimulus being thrown into the economy by leading nations (in the form of money and lower interest rates) can help sustain the economy. Will also be very interesting to see if the long term result of all this stimulus is hyper inflation.

POPSVenezuela signs oil deal with China The US government says it is not concerned by the developments, but equally it cannot be happy about the encroachment by Russia, or China, into a region Washington has long considered its backyard.

POPSDemocratic Candidates Long To Renegotiate NAFTA U.S. manufacturing is not in decline. Quite the opposite is true. Output, revenues and profits in the sector all achieved records in 2006, and preliminary government data indicates that new records were set in 2007. American factories remain the world's most prolific, producing 2.5 times the value of Chinese output. ... Between 2000 and 2003 there was a pronounced manufacturing recession, during which 2.8 million jobs in the sector were eliminated. The two candidates extrapolate from that statistic to assert that 3 million manufacturing jobs have been lost since 2000 on account of bad trade deals, like NAFTA, as though the trend were continuing. That's wrong. ... If trade had something to do with the loss of those 2.8 million jobs between 2000 and 2003, imports weren't the culprit. Manufactured imports did not increase at all during those three years. U.S. exports, however, dropped off by 11 percent during that precise period.

POPSStand with Tibet - Support the Dalai Lama " China's economy is totally dependent on "Made in China" exports that we all buy, and the government is keen to make the Olympics in Beijing this summer a celebration of a new China, respected as a leading world power. China is also a very diverse country with a brutal past and has reason to be concerned about its stability -- some of Tibet's rioters killed innocent people. But President Hu must recognize that the greatest danger to Chinese stability and development comes from hardliners who advocate escalating repression, not from Tibetans who seek dialogue and reform.
