Papa B's Predictions for 2010
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 2:46 AM
Russia and China know out that if Israel goes to war, everyone gets involved. And we .....we do have 200,000 military close to the Iranian border. With respect to politics, Papa B goes on to hope for some sort of "centrist consensus", but we all know that must be satire. Need some cheering up after ShadowStats' description of an inescapable "financial Armageddon"? Well, Papa B's predictions for the new year definitely won't fit the bill. When the Charm Rubs Off

denigration of his predecessor, aka "the last eight years." (Blighted by "a triumphant sense about war.") When Attorney General Eric Holder announced that five accused terrorists would be tried in federal courts, he said: "After eight years of delay. ..." When the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force made the controversial recommendation that women should get fewer mammograms, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius said: "This panel was appointed by the prior administration, by former President George Bush." In congressional testimony, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner almost deviated from the script. He said the Obama administration began after "almost a decade" -- slight pause -- "certainly eight years of basic neglect." Abroad, the fruits of the president's policy of "engagement" have been meager: Witness Iran continuing its nuclear program and China being difficult about carbon emissions. Here is a history lesson for an administration which .....

All Great Statists Target the Elderly
merrie
by merrie  12-4-2009    3
What's the first thing Mao Tse-tung did? He took out the educated people. He took out people who had a cultural, historical memory of China's past. He killed them, and Stalin did the same. He took out the people who remembered how things work. The left has been busy rewriting, revising the history of Reaganism and the eighties and tax cuts ever since it happened. They have been hell-bent on our population not knowing the truth, particularly the young population that was born during that period of time or ten years prior to it. They want them thinking the exact opposite of the truth, and they have to eliminate the people who know the truth to cement their power. Mao Tse-tung did it, Stalin did it. "Are you comparing Obama to those people?" No. Not in terms of genocide. But they're not invited to the summit. The people that know what to do to fix this are not invited to the summit, folks.

Third Quarter GDP Growth Fueled by Massive Government Spending
merrie
by merrie  11-25-2009    1
So if the consumer spending is down, one way to artificially inflate the GDP number is to increase government spending with money that the government doesn’t, by the way, have. In essence, the GDP number is positive due to increased debt! It’s purchased on a government card that has no credit limit. I’ve said before that Obama’s economic policies were very good at creating economic static. The appearance of growth through lots and lots of economic activity spurred by government spending. But the reality is that our economy isn’t growing. The government is just borrowing money from China against our childrens’ future tax payments in order to pour it into the economy. Which is a bit like getting out of debt by paying off your Mastercard balance with your Visa card. Say Anything Blog http://bit.ly/66pwFI

Seattle Translation Workers Suggest Boeing Move Could Be Risky
jillsimpson01
by jillsimpson01  11-16-2009
But according to statements made CEO W. James McNerney Jr., the company is willing to do just about anything to break the stranglehold that the unions have on Boeing. Company officials fear that union pressures will force Boeing to collapse like the automotive companies. In this competitive environment, where the company has new competition from Indian and China, there is no room for uncompetitive labor wages and pressures. One Japanese Translator recalled that when Boeing tried to negotiate concessions last year, it triggered a 57-day strike by labor that ended up costing the company $2-billion and prompted some customers to shift orders to competitor like Airbus.

China Smack Netizens Like Hummer Deal? Not So Much!

by nedhamson1  10-12-2009
Somewhere I found an art series on the "Bummer" but can't remember where now. Hummer has always been a strange deal. Every time I see one I laugh. It may be appropriate that a wannabe-famous Chinese firm bought the wannabe-taken-seriously-brand. Main reason for posting this is to introduce folks to China Smack, a strange and interesting look into the Chinese tech and monied class. A strange and bizarre mix of topics with comments by netizens after each story. Sort of like putting the National Enquirer, Fox News, CNN and NPR together in one place.

Amazing Rice Terraces
sahara
by sahara  10-8-2009    1
Upon seeing these stunning images of rice terraces in Southeast Asia and China, one could think that rice is actually only the byproduct of a bigger project: landscape art. The technique of rice farming and the work today is done pretty much the way it was millennia ago – one reason why most of the amazing rice terraces are still intact. Rice farming is also backbreaking work, as most of the narrow paddies can only be farmed by hand, like they were millennia ago. No wonder then that the younger generation is more drawn to jobs in the hospitality industry, or moves away...

US Troops Risk All for Safety of Chinese and USA imperialism?
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-7-2009
At first blush, the story sounds win-win: China "invests" in Afghanistan, hires out of work Afghans, helps stabilize economy. US troops make it safe for Chinese "private" company to exploit mineral resources. Exploit is the right word. Two thirds of the economies in the developing world are still structured by past imperialistic dictates to supply North America, Europe, and Japan with raw materials to make products for themselves and to sell worldwide are greater profit. So Afghan copper profits will go to Chinese banks and when copper runs out, what do Afghans have? In a number of African nations who have sold such rights to Chinese, they did not get the jobs either; the Chinese brought in Chinese workers. Imperialism 21st century style is no kinder than it was in 18th century.

Obama Rejects Afghanistan-Vietnam Comparison
drummond1999
by drummond1999  9-15-2009
Obama does not believe that comparisons between Afghanistan and Vietnam are accurate, for his sake, I hope he is right. Meanwhile the recent move to increase tariffs of Chinese tire imports may lead to tit-for-tat from either side. Though finally Obama believes that there is no need for any further economic stimulus packages, the worst is over.

Organs For Health Care
merrie
by merrie  9-10-2009
and I don’t want to spend the rest of my career waste-deep in a tub of hybrid vehicle battery acid. I just want to note a major beneficial aspect of the one-party autocracy system that Friedman left out. The work camps for political prisoners. Not only would they be a great place to throw angry peasants and annoying right-wing talk show hosts, shutting them up and making them a useful source of cheap labor for jobs that undocumented comrades don’t want to do, like working in vats full of whatever chemicals they need to make all the ”green” stuff. But the government also could sell their organs to help pay for universal health care. There, that’s my idea.

Fear and Loathing ... your health is at stake.
NonStatQuo
by NonStatQuo  9-4-2009
Americans have not been governed by the Repbulicans or the Democrats since 9/11. We have been governed by irrational fear. And it is paralyzing us. We have GOT to realize that crippling health care costs are going to continue to escalate. We won't be able to pay China back and more jobs will be lost. Healthcare costs are related to the economy. Stop letting the politicians frighten us into throwing away our country.

Don't fall for the recovery hype
gemfemfox
by gemfemfox  8-28-2009
And this is more proof. More jobs moved away to never return. Direct result of demanding our government punish the rich and regulate businesses. They leave. Wake up, or enjoy systematic poverty throughout our society. Without jobs for the masses, the "luckY" or "smart" or "educated" will have to work twice as hard to pay for the millions that will never be able to support their families again. Plus additional government interference that is going to make everything too expensive for the majority. No magic money tree, small business can't take any more expenses and everything coming from Washington is going to make this worse, not better. China is very happy with our current government plans. Recovery my arse

Unemployment & Immigration Tight? Not So Much

While there might be some connections in limited cases. Mexican, Nicaraguan, Honduran, or Guatemalan construction workers are not taking jobs from anyone - Wall Street took care of that - there is no construction of new homes. Immigrants are not closing down General Motors factories or supplanting US workers - those jobs went to China and then went nowhere as consumers stopped buying their cars. Read on.

We really, really need to make things...
NonStatQuo
by NonStatQuo  8-10-2009
How to bring the economy back? Why are there no jobs? Well because we stopped making things and then let China make all the things we used to make. Now China has our jobs. They belong to them now. And so does our debt. And so do we. We belong to China. So hey Republicans, hey Democrats, stop pretending to fight each other and wake up and smell the Starbucks. We lost and we don't even know it. Who is the enemy here? Our own greed and collective stupidity as a nation and we still are blind to the fact that we have lost our country while listening to birthers and other such nonsense. sigh.

Fake Steve Jobs: When you buy "made in China", this is what you're buying
Lexica
by Lexica  7-24-2009    1
More: Well, this is the world we are living in. These are the people we are dealing with… We can't make these products in the United States. Nobody could afford to buy them if we did. And, frankly, the quality would be about half what we get out of China. But these guys play rough. They really do. They are not nice people. And, though we talk a good game about how we insist on workers being treated with dignity, blah blah blah, well, I mean, come on. Have you ever been to China?… We know what goes on there. We know how they open your mail, and listen to your phone calls, and let their factories pollute like crazy and exploit workers, all in the name of progress. And we turn a blind eye to it. We let them know when we're coming to visit, and they give us a tour and put on a little show of how great things are, and how wonderful the dorm life is, and afterward we pretend to keep an eye on them -- but it's all theater. It is. We know it. What's more, you know it. Everyone knows it.

Mixed Data Leads to Mixed Markets
ryder99
by ryder99  7-16-2009
The Federal Reserve Board staff expects the Central Bank's balance sheet to peak later this year and decline gradually from then on. Yesterday China revealed perhaps another part of the reason for strong asset markets. The country's M2 surged to a new record since data avail in 1999 of 28.5%, well above expected 26.7%, compared to an average in past years around 18% and their GDP this morning was also stronger than had been anticipated. China's economy gathered momentum in the 2nd Quarter of the year thanks to a continuation of the massive fiscal and monetary stimulus. Yesterday's UK jobs figures were, as reported during the rest of the day, horrendous. UK unemployment data rose to hit a 12 year high of 2.38 million in the three months to May, equivalent to 7.6% of the workforce. This bigger than expected jump is the largest rise we have seen since records began in 1971 and 2.4% higher than it was this time last year.
