POPSEarly Human Ancestors Not Like Chimps When Darwin first published “Origin of Species” and later “Descent of Man,” detractors declared that they “didn’t come from monkeys.” One cartoon of the day (late 1800s) showed Darwin as an ape. I guess it now looks like apes may have descended from US!

For the next 25 years she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport.In May 2000 Dorothy—obese from poor diet and lack of exercise—was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. She mothered an orphaned chimp named Bouboule and became a close friend to many others, including Jacky, the group’s alpha male, and Nama, another amusement-park refugee… Sanaga-Yong was founded in 1999 by veterinarian Sheri Speede (pictured at right, cradling Dorothy’s head; at left is center employee Assou Felix). Operated by IDA-Africa, an NGO, it’s home to 62 chimps who reside in spacious, forested enclosures. :cry:

What binds all the "annualist" titles together is that while their "year-long ordeal" might be classified as a stunt, they have serious things to say about their subject matter and its importance to society. And there is a long and honourable history of "stunt" journalism. It goes all the way back to Nellie Bly, the pioneering American journalist. In 1887 she infiltrated an asylum by pretending to be mentally ill in order to investigate conditions there. Her expose, Ten Days in a Mad-House, outlined the grim conditions, rotten food, and beatings that constituted the life of patients. Ultimately, we are impressed by feats of endurance. For many readers, it adds authenticity to an act of criticism. For many of the authors of course, one "annualist" work is enough. "It would be really nice to do something that doesn't involve the words 'I', 'me' or 'my''.
