POPSWhy Do We Say “Cheese” When Having Our Photo Taken? Photography was once a pursuit for the rich. A the turn of the century, though, Kodak’s $1 Brownie camera (introduced in 1900), combined with their line of how-to books and pamphlets for photographers and their heavy advertising in prominent national magazines (these were the days when everyone read Life), created a mass market for photography and established the company as the leading expert on the subject. Kodak came into a position of what Kotchemidova calls “cultural leadership,” by framing the way photography, for which they supplied the technology, was conceptualized and used in the culture at large.

POPSWildfire evacuees grab pets and Bibles, then flee More: Lewis found himself surprised by his first reaction: He grabbed his Nikon digital camera, remembering his Gila Community College photography teacher’s instructions. “I don’t really know what I was thinking, except that I had to document this."… Finally, he realized he had to stop taking photographs and get out. “So I took my medical records, dog food, camera, laptop, clothes, a box of old photos of my children,” including his son with the head injury sustained in Baghdad and his 32-year-old art teacher daughter.” He also took his Bible and, of course, his two dogs — Karma and Smokey, an interesting combination for canine fire survivors. Later, he realized that he left all of his books and papers and schoolwork. He also left all his materials for the “diet craze” for which he’d signed up. “Left all that stuff behind — don’t know if that’s forethought or afterthought,” he mused.

POPSRon Mueck: Hyper-Realist Sculptor "He so nearly captures that extra bit, what we call the soul or spirit, that flame inside that makes us ourselves. He takes one to the very edge of the idea of life, calls into question what it is to be a person, what it is to be human. - Marina Warner."

POPSMysterious Beings?! "Children are somewhat mysterious beings. Their eyes say a lot when words are really unnecessary. And of course, there are some photographers that just know how to capture a child's spirit."

POPSIntended Consequences During the 1994 genocide, Rwandan women were subjected to massive sexual violence, perpetrated by members of the infamous Hutu militia groups known as the Interahamwe. Among the survivors, those who are most isolated are the women who have borne children as a result of being raped. Their families have rejected both them and their children, compounding their already unimaginable emotional distress.

POPSParents fight child porn threats against 'sexting' teens This is going to lead to a more concise definition of pornography as opposed to 'risque' photography. Is it right to label a thirteen year old a kiddie pornographer based on a photograph in which no sex act is involved? Would you care more if your own child was involved?

POPSNPR Morning Edition - Julius Schulman This morning I listened to a wonderful story about Julius Schulman, who takes the most amazing architectural photographs. As an art history major and someone who delved a bit into American Studies at UCSC, I was introduced to the work of Julius Schulman. It is great to hear that you can still commission him to do work and that he is still taking images (he doesn't like the word "shoot") and is right here in LA. The photographs are amazing and the story is worth listening. They interviewed a woman who commissioned Schulman to photograph her home in Hancock Park and she said "He makes you see what you take for granted. And we do that in our houses. We do that in our marriages. We do that with our children," says Spiegel. "He has ability to stop time and let you see it and to remember why you fell in love with it." Wonderful piece of NPR news this morning. Enjoy!
