POPSSocialism Kills: The Human Cost of Delayed Economic Reform in India
What would the impact on social indicators have been had India commenced economic reform one decade earlier, and enjoyed correspondingly faster economic growth and improvements in human development indicators? This paper seeks to estimate the number of "missing children," "missing literates," and "missing non-poor" resulting from delayed reform, slower economic growth, and hence, slower improvement of social indicators. It finds that with earlier reform, 14.5 million more children would have survived, 261 million more Indians would have become literate, and 109 million more people would have risen above the poverty line. The delay in economic reform represents an enormous social tragedy. It drives home the point that India's socialist era, which claimed it would deliver growth with social justice, delivered neither. by Swaminathan S. POPSKidnapping Case: Investigators Search for Evidence on Series of Unsolved Murders Dugard's stepfather Carl Probyn told FOX News' Geraldo Rivera that his daughter, now 29, is fragile and said he did not think she had tried to escape the backyard compound during her captivity. Probyn told FOX News that Jaycee is "an extremely good mother" and that his grandchildren were homeschooled by Garrido. He said the children, now 11 and 15, just found out that Jaycee was kidnapped. "They thought he was their dad. They didn't know Jaycee was kidnapped. She told them two days ago." Probyn says he's unsure if his daughter loved Garrido, but she "definitely was bonded to him after 18 years." POPSTeenage bombers are rescued from Taleban suicide training camps The Army believes that between 1,200 to 1,500 boys as young as 11 who were trained in Swat to become suicide bombers were recruited after the Pakistani Government signed a peace deal with the Taleban in February, handing over control of the valley to the militants. The agreement broke down after the Taleban started advancing on Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, which led to a military offensive that has all but driven the militants from the region. The boys were rescued after the Taleban were forced to abandon their camps. Many are still missing, however, having been sold to militants in other areas.
