First Jesus-era house discovered in Nazareth
kareval
by kareval  12-21-2009    3
The archaeological find shows how different it was 2000 years ago: There were no Christians or Muslims, the Jewish Temple stood in Jerusalem and tiny Nazareth stood near a battleground between Roman rulers and Jewish guerrillas. The Jews of Nazareth dug camouflaged grottos to hide from Roman invaders, said archaeologist Yardena Alexandre, excavations director at the Israel Antiquities Authority. But the hamlet was so far off the beaten path that the caves were apparently not needed, she said. Based on clay and chalk shards found at the site, the dwelling appeared to house a "simple Jewish family," Alexandre added, as workers carefully chipped away at mud with small pickaxes to reveal stone walls. "This may well have been a place that Jesus and his contemporaries were familiar with," Alexandre said. A young Jesus may have played around the house with his cousins and friends. "It's a logical suggestion." The discovery so close to Christmas pleased local Christians.

Creech Air Force Base: A Place of Disbelief, Confusion and Sadness
papananook
by papananook  12-2-2009
There is a disturbing contrast between aggressor and victim. The aggressor zooming around Las Vegas in a posh automobile, living a luxurious life style and launching missiles onto a target that is far away and the victim located in a village or inside a building on the Afghanistan Pakistan borders. There are over 200,000 people in internally displaced camps (IDP) in Afghanistan because of US bombardment and war. The number one enemy in Afghanistan is poverty. For many of those holding a presence outside of Creech Air Force Base, there is a look of total disbelief, confusion, and sadness. As the US troop presence in Afghanistan increases, the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) program will ramp up. Read about the actions in the local spotlight here and in the news here.

Illegal Israeli Settlers Terrorize Schoolkids

by mcsmithblack  11-29-2009
We all know "it ain't right", including those who commit these actions along with the ones who turn a blind eye to it. More from the article below: "The family was warned by two members of the CPT that a group of settlers had been spotted on the ridge above... would be safer for them to take the longest route home to avoid a confrontation. "We decided to accompany the family in case there was any trouble. Despite taking the longer route a group of five settler men rushed towards us from the valley above and attacked the father who had a toddler in his arms," American CPT member Sarah MacDonald told IPS. MacDonald and another CPT member were videotaping events in case they needed to go to the police. "I decided to try and engage the settlers to try and protect the family," Ciaghi told IPS. Ciaghi was thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the ribs and back as the men stole both video cameras from the women. "Because the settlers focused their attention on us the Palestinia

Triumph Of A Dreamer
debbyski
by debbyski  11-15-2009    1
"Tererai’s husband eventually agreed that she could take the children to America — as long as he went too. An impossible dream had come true, but it soon looked like a nightmare. Tererai and her family had little money and lived in a ramshackle trailer, shivering and hungry. Her husband refused to do any housework — he was a man! — and coped by beating her. Tererai found herself eating from trash cans, and she thought about quitting — but felt that doing so would let down other African women. At one point the university tried to expel Tererai for falling behind on tuition payments. A university official, Ron Beer, intervened on her behalf and rallied the faculty and community behind her with donations and support."

Finding Their Voice
debbyski
by debbyski  10-25-2009
"The women say the newsroom structure remains loose and titles are often trumped by a system of respect among equals. A key point in many of the women's lives came when they realized, usually at some point in primary or middle school, that as Dalits they'd been born at the bottom of India's social pyramid. The painful awareness came when she realized the teacher in her remote village never drank the water she offered him and would accept it only from higher-caste students."

The last untouchable in Europe
Lexica
by Lexica  10-6-2009    3
More: On occasions, the bigotry was brutally enforced: in the early 18th century a prosperous Cagot in the Landes was caught using the font reserved for non-Cagots – his hand was chopped off and nailed to the church door. Another Cagot who dared to farm his fields (strictly verboten) had his feet pierced with hot iron spikes.… Even in death, the discrimination persisted – the Cagots were buried in their own humble cemeteries; there is still one in Bentayou-Sérée, a tiny village north of Pau.… I ask Marie-Pierre if she will let me use a picture of Sylvia – and the rest of her children. She shakes her head. "I'm sorry but no. It is OK for me to admit where I come from. But if people knew about my children's background, it might be difficult for them." She gazes out of the window, at the distant green Pyrenees. "In some places, the hatred lingers. Even now. The Cagots may be silent but I can still hear it."

Israel Cruelty Towards Palestinian Children.
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  10-2-2009    1
The children are held in solitary confinement, in tiny cells, like the "Lockup", a cell 1.5m X 1.5m, or the "Closet", a cell the height of a person, in which one can stand but not sit or move, or the "Grave", a box that's closed from the top and measures 1m X 60 cm with a depth of about 80 cm. Good thing kids are flexible, eh? And the children are tried by a military tribunal. You can bet the Israelis don't treat their own kids like this. Wonder what kind of effect such treatment will have on this generation of Palestinian kids?

In Mich. Being a Good Neighbor Is Against the Law

When I opened this article this morning... I thought... GOOD GRIEF, I know we live in a Topsy-Turvy Society but this takes the cake! Wacko laws aren't new, there are probably endless piles of them still on the books somewhere in this land of ours. But please give me a break...! Acting upon them even though common sense is blatantly smacking you in the face is not only beyond the pale, it takes mindlessness to another plane. Move over Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin et al... In Michigan there are regulators who oversee child care, that make you guys look like amateurs in the screwy sphere of absurdity.

Can One Pill Tame the Illness No One Wants to Talk About?
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  8-24-2009    9
More: Exactly how zinc stops diarrhea is not entirely clear. Olivier Fontaine, a diarrhea specialist for the WHO, believes that since the mineral is an essential ingredient in about 300 enzymes, boosting zinc levels strengthens the body's immunity, thus preventing diarrhea from turning deadly. A single course apparently also staves off further bouts of diarrhea for about three months — long enough to see a community through the deadly rainy seasons. Contrast that with ORT, which is extremely effective in replacing fluids and nutrients but offers no quick end to the diarrhea itself. ORT has another drawback: crucially in cultures where seeing is believing, it offers no quick evidence that a patient is recovering Scientists first hit on zinc's effectiveness in the early 1990s, when researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Md., gave children in New Delhi a daily dose of syrup containing 20 mg of zinc. The rate of diarrhea dropped dramatic
