POPSpoem: "wishful thinking" or "what i'm waiting to find in our email boxes" by Alexis Pauline Gumbs
Too long to clip – click through for the rest. More: 9. people are interested in what you are wearing simply because it tells them what paintings to make. 10. everyone has always told you you can stay a child until you are ready to move on 11. if you run across the street naked at midnight no one will think you are asking for anything. 12. you do so many things because it feels good to move. you have nothing to prove to anyone. 13. white people cannot harm you. they do not want to. they do not do it by accident. 14. your smile makes people glad to be alive 15. your body is not a symbol of anything 16. everyone respects your work and makes sure you are safe while doing it 17. at any moment you might relive the joy of being embraced 18. no one will lie to you, scream at you or demand anything. 19. when you change your mind, people will remember to change theirs. 20. your children are safe no one will use them against you.

POPSStunted outlook on neglect of kids " What can the United States do? The State Department each year publishes heavily researched reports on human rights, drug trafficking, religious freedom and human trafficking. All of these are important topics. But is any of them as critical as saving a billion children from life as a mental cripple? Why not a new report, on human nutrition, with appropriate penalties for the nations that neglect their children?"

POPSIs a mother in labour a child abuser? I first learned about this story 2 days ago (h/t Kate), but it's taken me this long to write about it because I have been too busy pondering my own good fortune in having a smooth childbirth without unnecessary interference from pushy doctors or child welfare officials. And I've been giving my 2 year old daughter lots of extra cuddles. I'm also sending a donation to the National Advocates for Pregnant Women, and I encourage you to do the same. This doctor's orders: Count your blessings, cuddle your children, and help those less fortunate around you.

POPSPetition To Pres Obama. God Bless America, My Foot! We are no longer a country “of the people, by the people” we are a country of “the big business/big lobbies, by the big business/big lobbies”. They are the true owners of this land and greed will continue to step on and over those who outnumber the greedy few at the top, millions of times over. Even when they flagrantly and arrogantly fail, they succeed and go on conducting their greed in the same manner. God bless America, MY FOOT!" thinkingblue Let's keep our heads, while we continue to watch THE THEATER OF THE ABSURD!!! Carolyn aka thinkingblue

POPSAnother Potentially Religion Inspired Death Each time I come across a story like this it saddens me greatly. The victim here is a 13 year old child who happens to have the misfortune of being born into a family with limited reasoning power. I personally feel that if this child dies the parents should be held accountable.

POPSThe real threat to marriage ... But many of the religious folks would have you believe two guys living together in Iowa is the real threat to marriage ... while somehow a single, teen mother is now the poster child for abstinence education (which obviously didn't work). Am I missing something here, or is this just really stupid.

POPSComputers Call The Shots "Although humans can overrule the computer, SDM's call has stood in 91% of decisions in the county on whether to open an investigation, 92% of recommendations on removing a child from a home and 99% of decisions on whether to return a child."

POPSchild abuse & silent witnesses Child abuse 'impacts stress gene' Child abuse has long-lasting effects Abuse in early childhood permanently alters how the brain reacts to stress, a Canadian study suggests. Analysis of brain tissue from adults who had committed suicide found key genetic changes in those who had suffered abuse as a child. It affects the production of a receptor known to be involved in stress responses, the researchers said. The Nature Neuroscience study underpins the impact of stress on early brain development, experts said. Previous research has shown that abuse in childhood is associated with an increased reaction to stressful circumstances. Whilst these results obviously need to be replicated, they provide a mechanism by which experiences early in life can have an effect on behaviour later in adulthood Dr Jonathan Mill But exactly how environmental factors interact with genes and contribute to depression or other mental disorders in adulthood is not well understood.

POPSThere are More Health Insurance Choices;People Need to Investigate Of course, the very poor do not have many (if any) choices. But there are many people who choose cable television, x boxes, and second cars over insuring their kids. A lot of this has to do with the rampant lie that there is simply no such thing as affordable health insurance. Unfortunately, an uneducated public thinks that if they cannot afford the Cadillac of health plans then they should have nothing. Many people who view themselves as being unable to afford health insurance would in fact be able to afford a plan that would take care of catastrophic illness. Accident plans are highly affordable too and so are hospital indemnity plans. Of course, this does not excuse Florida's hardened heart. My comments are intended to be a message to those who are vulnerable; do your homework and you most likely will be able to find something in the mean time.

POPSReporting child abuse and neglect I looked up Texas law (clipped at the bottom) and was surprised to learn that in Texas any person is required to report child abuse and neglect. What about your state/country?

POPSISPs Neglect Infrastructure: Think of Capping Downloads Articles, like this one, do not take into consideration the growing trend of multiple internet ports per home. For example, a home could have a parent on one computer downloading news videos, a child on another computer downloading Netflix or MP3s, and a third child could be on a PS3/Xbox playing online. This type of house could easily surpass the monthly limits. Additionally, bandwidth needs typically doubles every year, so one house may only need 10 GB per month now. However, next year they will likely need 20GB per month. How are placing caps going to provide ISPs with incentive to increase their infrastructure? It will not!

POPSPlumbers told to watch for child abuse This is the craziest idea I have ever heard of!!! UK workers spying on their customers, soon everyone will live in fear of allowing anyone into their homes in case they are wrongly accused of mistreating their children.
